    3. The McLouth Times Friday October 29, 1909 Birthday Surprise. Last Tuesday, Oct. 25, being Mrs. Maggie THOMPSON's 64th birthday and while Aunt Maggie was busy preparing dinner for her sons, she was surprised by her children and some of her friends bringing well filled baskets and who ate dinner with her. Each one remembered her with a present. The party was composed of Robt. THOMPSON and family, Mrs. O.F. BURGOYNE, Grover THOMPSON and family, Jack and Frank THOMPSON, Mrs. Andrew HOAG, J.R. HARRIS and family, Mrs. B.W. BURGOYNE, Walter THOMPSON and family, Mrs. Mike MARTIN, Mrs. Isom KEMPT, and Mrs. Guy RICKMAN. Jack THOMPSON, Jr., brought the parties all back to town to be sure they would get home all right. We all enjoyed a good time and left Aunt Maggie and Uncle Jack happy.

    3. The Topeka Capital Journal Friday March 5, 1965 Lula Dixon. Valley Falls.--Mrs. Lula A. DIXON, 76, Valley Falls, died Thursday at the Winchester hospital annex after a long illness. She was born Nov. 18, 1888 at Eskridge and lived in the Valley Falls community more than 50 years. She was a member of the Valley Falls First Christian Church. Her husband, Clarence J. Dixon, died Aug. 23, 1943. Survivors include three sons, Glen Dixon, Aurora, Colo.; Willard Dixon, Olathe, and Cecil Dixon, Gary, Ind.; a daughter, Mrs. Bathene HAHN, Albuquerque, N.M., 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Hagge Funeral Home at Valley Falls in in charge of arrangements.

    3. The McLouth Times Jefferson County Friday October 29, 1909 Mrs. Laird Gets $3,500. The Santa Fe Railway company settled with Mrs. Thomas Laird for $3,500 on account of the death of Mr. Laird which occurred two weeks ago in the wreck. While the amount is small as compared to what it should have been, yet it is without litigation and delay so Mrs. Laird's advisors tought it best to settle. The same sums were paid the other claimants with the exception of Mrs. Tripp of Valley Falls who has as yet refused to settle. Mrs. Laird is planning to move to her little place near Cummings next week and Jake FETTY will help her with the rented land Mr. Laird had secured for next year.--Nortonville News.

    3. The McLouth Times Friday October 15, 1909 Mr. and Mrs. H.H. KIMMELL returned Tuesday from a trip to Overbrook, Kans., where they had been summoned on account of the death of their son-in-law, Mr. C.O. SULLIVAN. Tom EDMONDS who used to be station agent at Dunavant, but is now in business at Lawrence, is ill with typhoid fever at the home of his father near McLouth. He was up home just to spend a couple of days when he was taken sick. --Winchester Star. A.T. KYLE, Sr., of Weston, Mo., was here last week on a visit with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs. R.W. REYNOLDS. Mr. Kyle is the only survivor of the townsite company of Leavenworth, which platted the city in '54. H. Miles MOORE who was accidentally killed a few weeks ago in Leavenworth being the only other survivor of the townsite company. Mr. Kyle terminated his visit here last Saturday.

    3. The McLouth Times Jefferson County Friday October 8, 1909 Thos. Manuel EDMONDS who departed this life on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 29, was born in the town of Truro, Cornwall, England, August 20, 1837, leaving England at the age of 17. In early life he followed railroading for a living and rapidly advanced by promotions. During the civil war he was employed by the government to conduct trains thorugh the Cumberland mountains carrying supplies to the Army of the Tennessee from Nashville to Chattanooga. At the close of the war he was furnished a testimonial of his superior ability. Later he returned to Fort Wayne, Ind., and was employed by the Wasbash railway as conductor until early in the spring of 1871, when he purchased a farm in Leavenworth county, Kans., abotu 5 miles south of McLouth. His family followed in the fall of the same year. Where he lived until death. During the last 8 years he suffered considerable on account of sickness. On Wednesday, Sept. 22, he was advised by Dr. Gephart that it would be necessary for him to be removed to a hospital. He was therefore immediately taken to Bethany hospital, Kansas City, Kans. His wife, while at an old age still survives him. His family consists of 8 children. One daughter, Ida, died in infancy. those now living are as follows: T.J. EDMONDS, Lawrence, Kans.; Alexander EDMONDS, McLouth, Ks.; Geo. S. and Irving EDMONDS are on the old homestead; Wm. EDMONDS, McLouth, Kans.; Emma WATT, McLouth, Kans.; and Helen HEHN, McLouth, Kans. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church in McLouth Friday, Oct. 1, conducted by Rev. Saunders. Interment was made in the McLouth cemetery. The services were attended by many friends and relatives attesting the high esteem in which the deceased was held in the community.

    3. The McLouth Times Friday October 1, 1909 Stanwood items. Ross ADAMS and daughter, Miss Belle, of Hazel Ridge, attended church here Sunday. Mrs. Harmon ADAMS, son of and daughter of Wellman, attended church and visited relatives here Sunday. Mrs. Walter SMITH and little son, Ray, of Wellman, came over Saturday to visit her parents, John HAWORTH and wife returning home Sunday evening. Thomas EDMONDS who was taken to the Bethany hospital at Kansas City last week was reported worse and his wife and children were called to his beside Saturday but they returned to say Mr. Edmonds was a little better. Mr. and Mrs. A.T. JONES and children of Hazel Ridge attended quarterly meeting here Saturday. Last Monday afternoon while Alfred JONES, the 14 year old son of J.H. JONES was cutting corn with a sled, his foot in some manner slipped in front of the knife on the sled and cut quite a gash in the back part of the leg just above the heel. Dr. Gephart was called and dressed the wound and he is getting along nicely. Mrs. J.A. EDMONDS and daughter of McLouth spent Saturday and Sunday with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin SWAIN. J.H. JONES and family spent Sunday afternoon with Dick CARR of Wild Horse.

    3. The McLouth Times Friday September 17, 1909 John Jones of Tulsa, Okla. visited over Sunday with relatives in this neighborhood. (Stanwood.) A. T. JONES of Hazel Ridge was visiting this community Sunday afternoon.(Stanwood.) J.H. JONES was in Springdale vicinity Friday and Saturday looking after church matters.(Stanwood.) John JONES of Oklahoma, and Mrs. J.H.JONES and little daughter, Edith, Hiram HAWORTH and Elmer JONES went to Topeka Tuesday evening to attend the State Fair. (Stanwood.) Mr. Henry KIMMEL made a business trip to Kansas City today. Mrs. Jonathan STITES and son, Thos. who had been here for a couple of weeks past visiting numerous relatives and friends; departed Monday of this week for their home in Mulhall, Okla.

The home of Postmaster DICK was the scene of a merry party of young ladies last Friday morning when Miss Maud WILLIAMS entertained at breakfast and gave a linen shower to Miss Maud RANKIN. Kodak pictures were made of the young people arranged in groups on the beautiful lawn surrounding the house.

    3. The McLouth Times Jefferson County Friday September 10, 1909 Married. Monday, Sept. 6, Mr. Arthur DENNY and Miss Viola K. TARR, both of this vicinity. The marriage of this young couple occurred at Leavenworth, Probate Judge JOHNSON officiating. The newly wedded couple returned here Monday evening and will make this vicinity their home. They are both well known here and have a host of friends who are pleased to learn of their marriage and all of who wish them much happiness and prosperity.

    3. The McLouth Times Friday September 3, 1909 Harry NEVINS who has been visiting here from Lawrence for a week past, returned home Tuesday. Mrs. S.R. SLAWSON and sister, Mrs. R.M. SLAWSON returned home Monday from a visit at Topeka. Mr. and Mrs. S.R. SLAWSON and Mrs. R.M. SLAWSON spetn last week with relatives in Topeka, returning home Monday morning. Miss Elizabeth JONES returned to her home at Tonganoxie Monday after a visit with her sister, Mrs. J. N. JONES of this place. Rev. J.R. KIMMEL left Monday for Wyona, Ind., where he went to be in attendance at the general conference of the U.B. church. Mr. and Mrs. Ed. NEVIN and family of Lawrence, were here last week for the picnic. Mr. NEVINS and daughter, Miss Lela, returned home the first of the present week while Mrs. NEVINS and son, Joe, are spending the week relatives and friends in McLouth. Mrs. John STITES and son, Thos., arrived the first of the week from their home in Mulhall, Okla., on a visit with her mother, Mrs. LANDON, and other relatives. Mrs. W.R. COULSON who has been visiting here from Kansas City since last week left Tuesday morning in company with her mother, Mrs. Janet DICK, for a visit in Lawrence.

    3. The Topeka Capital-Journal Friday March 5, 1965 Grace Graves. Mrs. Grace W. GRAVES, 75, was found dead Thursday at her apartment, 921 1/2 Kansas. Dr. J.L. Lattimore, district coroner, who performed an autopsy, said Mrs. Graves died of an apparent liver ailment. He said exact cause of death has not been determined pending results of chemical tests. Mrs. Graves was born Oct. 14, 1889, at Ozawkie and moved to Topeka in 1945 from Stockton in Rooks County. She was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church at Ozawkie. She taught piano and voice in Topeka. Her husband, Ben Graves, died in 1920. A brother, Everett WEILAND, Oskalooa, survives. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home with burial in Ozawkie Cemetery.

    3. The McLouth Times Jefferson County Friday September 3, 1909 Death came to relieve David HOUSH of his suffering, Tuesday about noon. Since Saturday he had been rapidly sinking and relatives had been sent for. When the final summons came he dropped quietly to sleep. Mr. Housh's illness had extended over a period of several months and was pronounced cancer of the stomach. In accordance with his wishes, funeral services, conducted by Rev. C.F. Teetor, assisted by Rev. H.L. Saunders, and followed by the Masonic ritual services, were held at th ehouse Thursday at 3 o'clock, his favorite songs being rendered by Messrs Phinney, Rains, Leech and Johnson. Burial was made in Pleasant View, and the services at the grave were conducted by the Masonic order, with his lifelong friend, R.C. Young of Winchester, acting as Master. Loving hands heaped tender blossoms about his casket.

    3. The McLouth Times Jefferson County Friday August 27, 1909 Little Josephine OROKE, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. OROKE, was born June 13, 1909, died August 22, 1909, age 2 months and 9 days. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church Tuesday, Aug. 24, by Rev. Teeter of Oskaloosa.

    3. The McLouth Times Jefferson County Friday August 13, 1909 The death of Frank EDMONDS at Excelsior Springs, Monday evening was a sad ennding to a trip to regain lost health. Mr. Edmonds in company with his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Edmonds had gone to the Springs two weeks before but was unable to get relief from his trouble. Sunday evening a message came that Frank was very low and Mrs. Edmonds and their oldest son, Milt Edmonds and Harry GENSLER went Sunday night with Albert WILKINS in his big touring car. They left here about 11 o'clock and arrived at Excelsior at 6 o'clock next morning and we understand that Mr. Edmonds knew them. Tuesday morning they brought hime home on the 11 o'clock train. The remains wre taken to the home north of town Tuesday afternoon and the funeral was held at the Edmonds church Wednesday at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E. E. McAferty. The burial was at Fowler cemetery. Frank Edmonds was a man highly esteemed by all who knew him and his untimely death was indeed a sad blow to his family and relatives.

The Meriden Message Jefferson County Friday December 25, 1931 Mrs. Martha CRIGGER, 83, died last Sunday evening, Dec. 20, and funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. M.M. Murrell. Burial took place Wednesday at Marceline, Mo., her home from 1891 to 1900 where her husband and one son are buried. Mrs. Crigger was born in Tennessee, later removed to Marceline, Mo., and in 1900 moved to Meriden, where she has since made her home. She is survived by three children, Mrs. William GARRETT, Miss Addie Crigger and Melvin Crigger, all of Meriden, and also seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

    3. The Meriden Message Jefferson County Friday December 11, 1931 Sarah A. HOKE was born April 15, 1839 near Harrisburg, Pa., and died Nov. 30, 1931, aged 92 years, 7 months and 15 days. Soon after the close of the Civil War she married Jeremiah MILLER, a Union veteran. They moved to Kansas in 1869, and in the spring of 1870 moved to the Miller farm near Meriden where Mrs. Miller lived over 61 years. Her husband died in 1901. Mrs. Miller is survived by four children, Mrs. Edward GROENDYKE, W.L. MILLER, Harry J. MILLER, Frank P. MILLER and one grandson, all of Meriden. When a girl 16 years of age, Mrs. Miller was converted and united with the Methodist Church. She was one of the charter members of the Meriden Methodist church. She took great interest in the work of the church and this interest continued until the close of her life, though for some time she has been unable to attend services. When younger she visited and nursed the sick among her neighbors. Her passing removes one of the oldest members of the church and community. The funeral was held at the Methodist church at 2 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon, the pastor, the Rev. M.M. Murrell being in charge. Burial was in the Meriden cemetery.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Merryman, of Wamego and was teacher in Rock Creek high school for several years. Mr. Barnes is the son of Mrs. Cora Barnes of Meriden, and is well known in this vicinity.
