Hi Im new to the list and am looking to contact any living relatives of my English BATES ancestors and their USA REICHERTER/ RICHETER descendants. My 3 x great grandfather was Charles Bates. He was born at Oldbury, near Mancetter, in Warwickshire, England in 1821, the second son of Peter Bates and Ann (nee Stretton). In 1855 Charles married Caroline Neal. In 1856, Isaac (my 2 x great grandfather) was born. Charles left his wife and son in England and sailed to USA in 1857 (with his nephew also called Charles who married Anne Bradshaw an ancestor of Dale Gramse). Some more brothers, sisters, nephews and nieces also came to Kansas over the next few years. My Charles is listed on the US census 1860 living with his brother Isaac and family in Grasshopper Falls, Jefferson County, Kansas. On 3rd April 1866 Charles married a widow named Mary Ann Goddard (maiden name Mackley) in Jefferson County. Charles fought in the American Civil War in the 11th Kansas Cavalry Volunteers. On the 1870 census Charles and Mary Ann were in Oskaloosa, Jefferson County with their daughter May or Mary May. Charles died in 1876 at Boyle Station, Jefferson County were he had been the post master. Mary Ann died age 100 in Los Angeles, California where she had lived with various children from her first marriage. Charles and Marys daughter, Mary May Bates, married a man called Julius Reicherter (or Richeter) in 1884. I have found the couple and their 3 children on various US census returns from 1900 1930. On the 1930 census, Julius age 70 is living with his married daughter and her family in Cedar Township Kansas. I would very much like to trace any living descendants of this American side of the family. I have tried to contact Dale Gramse (I was in contact with him some years ago) through the Jefferson county website but have had no response, I hope he is well. My husband Tony and I are coming to USA Easter 2007 and will be in Jefferson County between 6th 8th April. We would like to visit the various cemeteries where my Bates ancestors are buried and perhaps look at the places where they lived. I would like to do some research at the library in Topeka and hope to get some information about my Charles being a postmaster at Boyle Station. We also would like a recommendation for a hotel or B& B perhaps around Nortonville. Any other suggestions of places we might like to visit would be very welcome. Many thanks for any ideas help and suggestions Pat Boucher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- FIGHT BACK AGAINST SPAM! The Jefferson County Gen Society's tombstone inscription book has transcribed Anthony W Meyers' date of birth as 1817, dod 30 Jun 1895. RHVF cemetery. The book also lists: Anthony Wayne Meyers 27 Nov `847 - 17 Dec 1925 s/o Anthony & Rebecca Meyers. RHVF I didn't find a Rebecca Meyers listed. However, amongst all those Meyer/Meyers/Myers etc listings is this "helpful" entry: Meyers, Mrs. d 16 Jan 1906 RHVF Since she's also buried at Rose Hill Valley Falls cem., maybe she belongs to your bunch. Or not. There are about 2 pages of listings for MYERS & MYER but I didn't find Rebecca or Anthony among them. A few of these Myers are from Valley Falls. There's a "Mrs Myers" who died Apr 1900 but she's buried at McLouth. Then I checked the Society's marriage record book and found these possibilities: Meyer, Anthony, 26, fr Jeff Co Kans Ammen, Lanna, 18, fr Jeff Co Kans m. Dec 31 1878 at Valley Falls by Wm. Clark Meyer, Anthony Joseph, 24, fr McLouth Kans Werst, Clara Elsie, 23, fr Ozawkie m. May 02 1906 There are a couple more Meyer/Meyers marriages of folks that occurred at Valley Falls: George C. TO: RICHARD WELLMAN FROM: Nickie Myers Shasteen Thank you very much for all the research!! 1. When you get a chance please do pursue the 80 acres of land for A. W. Myers (Meyers) as you mentioned: A. W. Myers recorded as owner of 80 acres of land in 1876 in section 33, twp. 8, range 18. This is southeast of Valley Falls. If you wish, I can pursue when purchased and when sold, by doing research at the court house. 2. Is there a PROBATE RECORD for Anthony W. Meyers (Myers) ... wish he could spell his name the same every time! 3. There is a probate record No. 2343 for A. F. Myers possibly AUSTIN FOSTER MYERS. Again would have to research at the court house to determine if any more information is available. 4. Alice R. Myers Monnett, wife of Hillery Monnet, buried Spring Grove cemetery located in Anthony, Harper County KS. I didn't know this. THANK YOU! This placed my g aunt in the exact area where my grandfather MURRELL SANFORD (sometimes SANFORD MURRELL)MYERS b 30 May 1886 in Valley Falls would have met and married my grandmother. Now I have a connection! Thanks again ... Nickie Myers Shasteen

A couple of years ago I checked the archives and found a cousin also looking for our gg grandfather ANTHONY W. MEYERS in Valley Falls KS. His uncle has looked for years before we started and also was STUCK the same place we are ... no city, no county and no relatives past ANTHONY W. MEYERS who was born in NC ... someplace!! And whose parents on both sides were also from NC ... someplace!! Anthony W. Meyers died 30 Jun 1895 and was buried in Valley Falls. His wife, Rebecca died 16 Jan 1906 in Valley Falls. I have both of their obituaries on both of them. OSKALOOSA TIMES newspaper, Friday July 5, 1895 page 5 column 3 says "A. W. Myers died Monday morning and was buried Tuesday a large number of his friends attending the funeral. He was 76 years old and was a resident here for a long time." (I think since 1865) THE NEW ERA newspaper Saturday July 6, 1895, Valley Falls Kansas page 8, column 3 under "Dunavant Items": "On last Sunday morning, after a protracted illness and much suffering with old age, and a complication of diseases, quietly and peacefully, passing from earth to the great beyond, Mr. Anthony MEYERS. (he actually went by MEYERS) The funeral service was conducted by Rev. S. V. Ismond of Hamilton, Mo. A large concourse of friends gathered at the home of the deceased which was evidence of high regard in which Mr. Meyers was held. The family have the lasting sympathy of all." And Rebecca Meyers, his wife - THE NEW ERA newspaper, January 18, 1906, page 5, column 3: "Died. Mrs. Rebecca Meyers who has been a sufferer with cancer on the face for years, passed peacefully away at her home in this city Tuesday evening, Jan 16, at 9 o'clock, aged 78 years 7 months and 27 days. The funeral was from her residence Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. I. A. Wilson conducting the services. She had been a resident here for 41 years." NOTE: I. A. Wilson was a local minister and on page 5 January 15, 1906, THE NEW ERA newspaper mentions: "Rev. I. A. Wilson of this city attended the Foreign Missionary Rally of the First Districk at Atchison Tuesday. He was on the program for an address ..." Their son, ANTHONY WAYNE MEYERS lived there also and according to THE VALLEY FALLS VINDICATOR newspaper of January 1, 1926, page 4, column 4 he died in Oskaloosa Dec 1925. On 31 July 1909 he married Sara Lucinda Ferguson of Valley Falls and they had 4 children there two of whom preceded there father in death, and two living ... George Lelo (Meyers or Myers?) of Valley Falls and Lily Mubella (Meyers or Myers? Who I think married John Metzger), now Mrs. John Metzger of Ozawkie. They had been members of the Christian Church for some time. It continues that Anthony Wayne Meyers (Anthony's son, my g uncle) "left to mourn his wife, one son, and one daughter, one step daughter, Lot tie Leola Steward of Ozawkie; and lists his brothers Ira of Horton, Kansas, Austin and Lum (assuming Lum is my g grandfather Christopher CoLUMbus Myers, both of Oklahoma; JEROME OF KANSAS CITY MO, and John of Columbia, etc. "Funeral services were conducted at the First Baptist Church Tuesday ... by the pastor Rev. C. W. Harvey ... songs were sung by Mrs. Lou Hauck, Miss Mellie Dornblaser, Mr. Milton Schindler, and Mrs. Fred L glE~r (that is what was emailed to me glE~r) Lot tie STEWART became Lot tie Steward WARD who died Nov. 27, 1975 wife of Ira E. WARD and was buried in Hardo Oak Cemetery located south of McLouth and east of Perry Kansas. Information was found in the "Tombstones and burials of Jefferson County, Kansas - Jefferson County Genealogical Society in Oskaloosa, Kansas. And that is all I know! I know the descendants down through C Columbus Myers, just not the ancestors or brother, sisters, etc of ANTHONY W. MEYERS. GOT ANY SUGGESTIONS OF WHAT TO DO NEXT? ... Nickie Today's Topics: 1.
