The thanks just keep on coming. You've found a couple more pieces of my puzzle. Thank you. By the way, you might find this amusing. My Aunt Ruth Ann -- who is the oldest living member of my family -- tells me she remembers Goldie very clearly, but only from behind. Seems there were so many people to feed in the household that she spent most of the day standing in front of the stove with her back to everyone. <grin> I'll check in to the Marks in McClouth and see if I can turn anything up. You guys are the greatest. This is indeed the Martin Walz I am looking for. I have an old obituary for him, but no info on which paper it was from, and either the one I have didn't mention where he is buried or it was cut off. I would certainly appreciate a copy of the obituary you are referencing, Richard. I had found the information from the Annals of Platte County. Thank you very much for going to the trouble to look that up as well. ' I was wondering why they buried Martin in the Reformed Presbyterian churchyard. Looks like the Lindsays were associated with that church, so he isn't alone after all. Funny, but the idea that he might have been laid to rest among strangers bothered me. And the rest of the info you provided is new to me. So, thank you, thank you, thank you. -- JoLynne -----Original Message----- From: ksjeffer-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ksjeffer-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Richard & Joy Wellman Sent: Tuesday, February 13, 2007 1:21 PM To: ksjeffer@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [KSJEFFER] Introduction Hello JoLynne, There is record of a Martin Walz, b. 30 Mar. 1864, d. 30 Dec. 1913, buried at Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery, Winchester, KS. Jan, how can I thank you? I knew where Bertha Anna was buried. She's in the Catholic cemetery, because her mother was Catholic. But Martin was not, and he wasn't buried with any of the other family members. I looked and didn't find him in any of the online cemetery listings. Thank you, thank you, thank you. The Reformed Presbyterian cemetery in Winchester is the only cemetery within walking distance from the town of Winchester. Many persons are buried there because of proximity to the town. Several of my ancestors are there and none were members of the Reformed Presbyterian Church. My grandmother buried my grandfather there so she could walk to the grave as she had no automobile. The Wise cemetery is a couple miles SE of Winchester, which is often called the Winchester cemetery. I will copy the newspaper items the next trip I make to the Gen. Soc. Library in Oskaloosa. It will probably be a couple weeks due to the recent snow. Richard --------------------------------- Don't get soaked. Take a quick peak at the forecast with theYahoo! Search weather shortcut.

Hi, Jan. Thanks for checking resources. Many of my Lindsay and Van Meter ancestors -- including Cora and Baily Mack -- are buried over in Platte County, Mo., where the families lived before relocating to Winchester. However, I have yet to locate the grave of my great-grandfather, Martin Luther Walz (he also went by the given name Matthias). I didn't see him in the cemetery listing next to his two-year-old daughter, Bertha, who is the only other family member I know of interred near Winchester. I have very little information on marriages, so any lookups there would be most helpful. I'd be looking for Baily Mack Van Meter and Cora Bell Lindsay c. 1890s. I'd also be looking for any marriages of her siblings: Lou Lindsay and James Fairhurst ... Edward C. Lindsay and Ida McClain ... James P. Lindsay and Mattie Bonner ... Sallie Lindsay and Peter Keller ... Joseph Hunt Lindsay and Goldie Mark. On the Van Meter side of the family, I would be looking for Mary Louise Van Meter and ? Bohan ... Eugene Van Meter and Dorcas ? Those would be c. the 1920s. On the Walz side of the family, I would also be looking c. the 1920s for the marriages of Rosina Justina Walz (who also was known as "Aunt Teen," "Tina" and "LaVerne" -- go figure) and Merritt L. McKay ... Andreas Josepf (Uncle Joe) and Gladys Phelps ... Martin Johan Walz (Martin) and Jeanette Virginia Van Meter ... Heinrich Friederich Walz(Uncle Henry) and Marie Nielsen ... and Emma Cecelia Jean Walz and Raymond Larson. Thanks for the clue on Percy Van Meter. I'll follow up on him. The Van Meters are pretty elusive. I know they came from Hardin County, Kentucky, and the family there is pretty well documented, but there are a lot of blanks in between. I will add those names to the list I carry around for Jefferson county. In the meantime, if you haven't already, you should check the archives going back several years, for these surnames, that may have been posted to the mailing list. Have a good one!! Thanks, Jim. I actually have a good start on the family history, because of work older relatives have already done. However, what they had were simply lists of names and dates. I'm working on fleshing out the family history with more details and documentation. So as I plug along, I'll most likely be putting out requests for specific information or sources of info. Also, I'm in Kansas City, Mo., and if anyone has family history here and needs a lookup, just let me know. -- JoLynne
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday September 30, 1909 Wm. Wesley, seventh child of Wm. N. and Rachel L. BRITTAIN, was born at Lamont, Pettus county, Missouri, March 15th, 1878 and died at his home near Valley Falls, Sept. 22, 1909, aged 31 years, 6 months and 7 days. He was married to Miss Mary PUCKETT, May 2, 1901. He leaves a widow, an adopted daughter, an aged mother, two sisters, and one brother to mourn his departure but goes on to join a father, one brother and three sisters where no sorrow or death ever comes. He was converted at the Boyle tent meetings in 1905 and joined the M.E. church at Dunavant, but later transferred his membership to Valley Falls. All through his sickness he never complained, was always cheerful, and told his relatives if his time had come he was ready and willing to go, as he feared no evil. And when death came he met it without fear. And while we mourn for him we know that our loss is his eternal gain and we shall soon join him never to part again. Card of Thanks. We desire to convey our heartfelt thanks to the friends who so kindly assisted us through the recent sickness and death of our husband, son and brother. Mrs. Mary E. Brittainn, Mrs. Rachel L. Brittain, Mrs. Lydia O. Fisher, Mrs. R.M. Walker, J.W. Brittain and family.

The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday September 30, 1909 Death of Little Grandchild. Grandma J.W. COOLING east of town is in receipt of the sad word of the death of her little granddaughter Birdean at Grenola, Kansas. Alma Birdean CLARK, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lambert CLARK, died August 27, 1909, aged one year and twenty-one days, after a short but severe illness. She was a patient sufferer. The funeral was held August 28, at 2 p.m. from the family residence conducted by the family pastor, Rev. H. W. Todd. He took for a text, "I will go to her. She can not return to me." The music was furnished by the Ladies Quartett who very appropriately and tenderly rendered as one of the selections, "Safe In The Arms Of Jesus." The large concourse of friends and the beautiful floral offerings attested the little darling had captured the hearts of others as well as father, mother, brothers and sisters.
