The Valley Falls Vindicator Jefferson County Wednesday January 3, 1940 Mrs. Rachel Lou BOOTH, who passed away Wednesday, Dec. 27th, at her home in Valley Falls, was the tenth and youngest child of Mrms. Eliazer McCLURE. Her parents and her nine brothers and sisters have all preceeded her in death. She was born near St. Louis, Missouri, February 27, 1853 and came to Kansas with her parents when she was three years old. She lived in Jefferson County, Kansas, the remainder of her life, which was only two months short of eighty-seven years. She joined the Methodist church when she was a young girl and remained a faithful and active member throughout her lifetime. On November 11, 1877, she was married to Isaac BOOTH who died in 1917. Five children gladdened their home; Mrs. Jessie BOWEN; Mrs. Ada MOORE; George, who died in 1922; Mrs. Lilllie KOONS and Mrs. Blanche BROSA. All of the daughters live in or near Valley Falls. Mrs. Booth had twelve granchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrms. Booth took two other boys into their hospitality; Sam PERSING of Rock Creek, and Ernest SCHICK of Cannonville, Oregon. Mrs. Booth has made her home in Valley Falls since 1919. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church Saturday afternoon, December 30, by Rev. Sam Hedrick. A solo was sung by Mrs. Chas. Marsh, with accompaniment by Mrs. Hedrick at the organ. Burial was in the Valley Falls cemetery. Card of Thanks. The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 29, 1910 At the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. W. HISER, Dec. 18th, 1910, at high noon, Mr. H. Vernon WOODS, of Mt. Vernon, Mo., and Miss Velma Ellena FOWBLE, of Aurora, were united in marriage, Rev. R.W. Reynolds officiating. To the strains of the wedding march played by Miss Haddie Woods, sister of the groom, the bride entered, being escorted by her father. The groom met them at the alter where the bride was given away by her father. The bride was handsomely attired in a plum colored skirt and waist of cream silk net over cream silk and wore white taffeta silk ribbon in her hair. The groom wore the conventional black. The house decorations were lavender and white. After congratulations the guests were invited to the dining room where an excellent three course luncheon was served. The bride's cake was cut by the bride and groom. The afternoon was spent in a social way. They received some valuable and useful presents. Those present were the immediate relatives of the contracting parties.--Aurora Advertiser.

HARTMAN left Sunday for Brookfield, Mo., where on Wednesday he attended the marriage of his daughter, Miss Stella HARTMAN, to Jas. FORE, landlord of the Dover hotel of Denver, Colo. Mr. Hartman returned today so that Manager REYNOLD could spend New Years with his family at Brookfield.
The Valley Falls New Era Thursday December 29, 1910 Attempted Holdup. Shortly after Harry OWENS opened the meat market early last Friday morning a stranger walked in and asked him if he had any money. Harry was in front of the counter. He answered no and turning his pockets inside out offered the fellow all he had--a piece of tobacco. The man asked, "Are you sure you have no money?" Harry began to feel like dropping through the floor when some one was heard approaching and the would be robbert walked out telling Harry not to move and disappeared in the semi-darkness.

The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 29, 1910 After a lingering illness Chas. ROBERTSON, manager of the lumber yard at Arrington, died of Bright's disease, Dec. 23, 1910, aged 48 years. The funeral was held Sunday at the Methodist church at Arrington, and the body was taken to Topeka Monday for burial. He leaves a wife and two children. He was a brother-in-law of D.T. GABRIEL, of the Gabriel Lumber Co., Topeka.
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank MARTIN died Thursday at the age of one week and was buried Friday afternoon in the Denison cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.N. Brown at the house. (Denison.)

The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Enda Pearl Allen BROWN died Friday morning, Dec. 16, at her home in Denison, aged 19 years, 11 months and 28 days. Her mother died soon after Pearl's birth and she lived with her grandmother, Mrs. BALES until the death of Mr. Bales on Feb. 10, 1910. She was married to William Brown and an infant son survives her. She united with the Christian church soon after her marriage and continued a consistent member until her death which took place after an illness of four weeks. Funeral services were conducted Saturday in the Christian church by her pastor, John Hopkins. Burial was made in the Denison cemetery.
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Sudden Death of Gene Allen. Tuesday morning early Gene ALLEN was found dead in the home of his brother, Samuel Allen, in this city, where he had called the afternoon before. He was lying in the hall at the foot of the stairs where he had lain all night with his clothes on, dead and cold. It was known that he was there early the evening, before, in a stupor, but it was supposed that he would soon sleep it off and go home, or take care of himself. Dr. Lowry was called and after viewing the body called an inquest in the afternoon. County Attorney WORSWICK accompanied by Sheriff RILEY, came over from Oskaloosa to conduct the inquiry. After the examination of half a dozen witnesses the jury, composed of Neil McLEOD, Will ONEAL, H.H. MITCHELL, Elmer LEWIS, J.E. TUTT and Sam CONNELL, found that death was caused by heart failure. James Eugene Allen, one of ten children born to Ricahrd and Malinda Allen, was born June 29, 1868 on a farm on Brush Creek east of Valley Falls, and died in that city December 19, 1910, aged 42 years, 5 months and 20 days. Gene was never married. Valley Falls has always been his home. He is survived by his aged mother, four brothers, LIvy, Chris, Samuel and Ebert, and two sisters, Mrs. Bud HOGAN and Mrs. Albert ROSE. The funeral was held from the home of his brother Samuel Thursday at 10 o'clock, Rev. H.R. Murphy officiating the services. The burial wa in Farrar Cemetery.
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Hurt In A Runaway. As they were driving home in their surrey late Saturday afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Guy McFARLAND were injured in a runaway. They were taken immediately to Dr. M.F. MARKS' office for treatment. Mrs. McFarland escaped with slight scratches and bruises, but Guy was hurt about the eye and so stunned by the blow that he was not himself for a day or two. The team, one of that a little high spirited, frightened when Clarence STAFFORD in a lumber wagon drove rapidly around McFarlands, whose team starting to run upset their surrey and dragging it along for a few yards with the occupants helpless within, pulled the tongue out of the clips, and ran across the bridge where they were caught by Parker LEWIS, who with Clayte BURKERT was driving in from the north, and brought to town. Beech CHAPMAN assisted Guy and his wife, out of the rig, straightened it up, gathered up and cared for the their several scattered packages. After treatment and they were able to travel, Jess GLASSELL took Mr. and Mrs. McFarland home in his carriage. Guy is now alright.
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Death of Mell Hefty. After a very brief illness Mell HEFTY aged 53 years died suddenly at his home at Half Mound Tuesday afternoon. The cause of his death was heart failure due to pneumonia. He attended the funeral of Mrs. Freeland last Friday but went home with a chill. Sunday a physician was called, when it was found that his condition was serious. Mr. Hefty was a prominent farmer an stockman on Coal Creek, where he had lived for over thirty years, a leader in church and best civic life. The funeral will be held from the Coal Creek Evangelical church Friday at one o'clock, Rev. Berhinger officiating. The burial will be in the cemetery nearby.
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Julia Anna COOK was born in Paltte county, Mo., Augut 21, 1847, and died six miles north of Valley Falls, Tuesday, December 13, 1910, aged 63 years, 3 months and 22 days. With her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John COOK, Julia moved to Leavenworth county, Kansas, in 1854, where her mother died three years later. In Leavenworth county, Feburary 25, 1868 Julia Anna Cook was united in marriage to Joshua FREELAND of Valley Falls. To this union wer born four children, two daughters, Mrs. Sarah GLENN, of Toepka and Mrs. Katie SUMMERFELT, of Texas, and two sons, Edward R. and John J. FREELAND of Valley Falls, who with the bereaved father, survive mother, besides fourteen grandchildren, two brothers, and five sisters, namely: Robt. and Frank COOK, Mrs. Joe RASWELL and Mrs. Warren WOODSON, of Leavenworth, Mrs. Donnie MYERS, of Kansas City, Mo., Mrs. Robert BAKER, of Wichita, and Mrs. Henry BOWERS of Leavenworth. In 1867 Julia united with the Baptist church, but as it was not convenient to attend the church of her first choice, Mrs. Freeland joined the South Methodist church in 1879, wherein she continued to live a devoted and loving Christian life. Two of her sisters, Mrs. Warren WOODSON and Mrs. Henry BOWERS of Leavenworth attended the funeral. Last Friday noon from up Coal creek way where Mr. and Mrs. Freeland had lived for more than forty years, so well and favorably known, one of the largest funeral processions in local history wended its way to Valley Falls, where from the Methodist church, the funeral of Mother Freeland was held, Rev. C.B. Zook of Topeka, assisted by Rev. Beauchamp, the pastor, conducting the services in the presence of a large congregation. The burial was in the Farrar cemetery. Card of Thanks. The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 22, 1910 Death of Grandma Rhea. After a long illness Mrs. Amanda RHEA, with her husband, Spartan Rhea, one of the first settlers in Leavenworth County, died Wednesday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.R. YOUNG in this city, where she lived many years. Mrs. Rhea was a widow and 81 years of age. The funeral will be from the Christian church this Friday morning.

The funeral was held from the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben FLORY, Thursday afternoon, H.R. Murphy, pastor of the Christian church officiating at the services. The burial was in Farrar cemetery.

The Valley Falls New Era Thursday December 8, 1910 Winchester items. Miss Hazel McDERMOND has been visiting Miss Carrie SLOOP at Boyle. A.G. WADDLE has traded his stock of dry goods for a farm south of Oskaloosa. Miss Katherine McDERMOND of Nortonville is spending a few days with her mother. Phil GIBSON has his family moved into their new home and has made arrangements to have the Artman store building repapered and repainted before stocking up. Clayton YOUNG has an apparatus erected at this place north of town which resembles a macroni wireless telegraph station. The neighbors say however, it is a well derrick.
The Valley Falls New Era Jefferson County Thursday December 8, 1910 Joseph C. COFFEY died of heart failure in St. Francis Hospital, at Topeka, Nov. 30th, 1910. Aged 42 years. His illness originated in Oklahoma, about 3 years ago where he still owned a valuable farm and beautfiul home at Weatherford. After a residence of 8 years in Oklahoma, he returned to Meriden, Kans., with a forlorn hope of regaining health in the County of his nativity. He was united in marriage with Miss Kate QUANEY in 1893 who survives him as do also four children, Grace, Gertrude, Marie and Thomas, age of children, sixteen, fourteen,eleven,a nd five respectively. His is also survived by the following brothers and sistes, Mrs. John G. MARTIN, Rock Creek, Rt.Rev MOUSIGNOR Thomas F. COFFEY, of Carbondale, Pa., Mrs. Mary J. PRYOR, Topeka, Miss Rose A. COFFEY, WIlliam H. COFFEY, and Mrs. Chas. BECKER of Meriden, Kans., John E. COFFEY and James E. COFFEY, Rock Creek. He was well known in Jefferson County as a generous hearted citizen and a good neighbor. Was a member of Meriden Camp of the Modern Woodman. Funeral service was held Saturday at St. Aloysius Church, at Meriden. Mass was read by Father Goldman of Nortonville and Father Murphy of Topeka. The sermon by Rt. Rev Father Heyden of Topeka after which the body was laid to rest in the Catholic Cemetery at Meriden.

Mr.and Mrs. SEAL spent Sunday in Meriden guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. PEEBLER. Miss Frances COFFEY spent a part of her vacation with Meriden friends. While playing int he yard Tuesday, little Earl BEASIMEYER fell and fractured his collar bone. Mrs. Blanche DUGAN of Perry spent Thanksgiving with her parents, Mr.a nd Mrs. John COFFEY.
