Author: RichardWellman44 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.jefferson/565.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The divorce records for Jefferson Co. have been compiled by the Jefferson Co. Genealogical Soc. into an alphabetized list, but only from 1855 up though 1899. The divorce proceedings are listed with all the other Civil Cases, so one must review the list of civil case records to sort out the divorce records. There is a desire/hope to compile the later divorce records, but it is not available at this time. Richard Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was sure that women could vote in Kansas before 1920 and figured that what the constitutional amendment could only have added the right for them to vote in presidential? national? elections. 2. Richard & Joy Wellman
    3. Hello Jan, If you have not had success of finding information about the "all woman" city council/mayor of Oskaloosa, you can find an article giving the details in the Oct. 1995 issue of YESTERYEARS, starting on page 7. If you don't have issues that far back, I can copy those pages and mail them to you. In response to the question of women voting--In 1859, under the Wyandotte Constitution, women could participate in school district elections and own property. When Kansas became a state in 1861, those rights remained. by 1887, women could vote in municipal elections. In 1912, women in Kansas won the right to vote in national and state elections eight years before the 19th amendment gave that right to women in all states. Hope this helps your research.
