    1. [KSJEFFER] Oskaloosa's Big Fire: February 16, 1900
    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Oskaloosa Times Jefferson County Friday February 16, 1900 Oskaloosa's Big Fire. Jefferson House, Cooper Building and Edmond & Perry's Meat Market Destroyed. Fire broke out in Edmond & Perry's meat market at about 2:30 o'clock Saturday morning and had gained considerable headway before it was discovered. It is supposed to have caught in the upper story from the stove pipe. When discovered, by Miss Helen BALSLEY, it had almost consumed the rear of the meat market and had burned through to the Cooper building where Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Balsely and Miss Helen were sleeping. They gave the alarm and saved a few personal effects. Mr. Edmonds and wife, who slept upstairs over the meat market, barely saved themselves. As is usual in cold weather the fire engine was frozen up and considerable time was lost before water could be thrown on the flames. By the time the engine was in working order the meat market and Cooper building were past help so the fire company concentrated their efforts onthe Jefferson House in a vain endeavor to save it. But by 3:45 the roof had caught fire and it gradually spread over the east side of the building and finally consumed it. By five o'clock the three buildings were burned to the ground. Practically all of the furniture was saved from the hotel, but very little from the Cooper building and none from the Edmonds & Perry market. As soon as the alarm was given the citizens of the town turned out and did all that could be donbe to aid the fire department and to assist in saving property. The only one injured during the entire fire was Will KIRKHAM. He was assisting to move an out-house when a heavy timber fell on his head and knocked him senseless. He recovered in a short time, however. The loss is considerable, but the buildings were pretty well insured. Edmonds & Perry had $1,500 on their stock, building and fixtures. Wm. DOCKHORN had $1,200 on the Cooper building. J.L. FAUBIAN had $2,000 on the hotel. Edmonds & Perry, and Dockhorn & Co., will erect a couple of brick buildings on their lots as soon as arrangements can be made. They expect to begin work next week. J.L. Faubian is having plans made for a new hotel, and will begin work in a few weeks. In the meantime he has rented the McClellan building, in the Union Block, and will continue to entertain his patrons, to the best of his ability. The Times unites with the people of the community in extending sympathy to those who suffered by the fire.

In the obituary, among other things, he said: "At 5 o'clock, Saturday evening, January 27th, Mrs. Emily J. HARMAN, our Mother, after more than two years of suffering passed peacefully away. Emily Jane BURGOYNE was born in West Virginia near Franklin, Pendelton county, May 2nd. In 1853 the deceased was united in marriage to Noah H. 3. The Oskaloosa Times Friday February 9, 1900 Ozawkie items. Dr. PUDERBAUGH is on the sick list this week. The best snow of the season Wednesday night. M.A. WILSON lost a valuble steer last Saturday with splenic fever. J.M. PUDERBAUGH transacted business at the "Hub" the for part of the week. S.H. STEFFEY shipped a carload of cows to Kansas Cioty Monday evening. The little boy of Chas. CURRIER's is reported quite sick by Dr. Puberbaugh. C.H. ABBOTT returned from Olathe, Thursday evening and as the line gang of the Santa Fe is off until March 19, he will be here until then. Mrs. Lizzie JOHNSON and family left Thursday morning to join her husband at Leavenworth where he is employed in a llivery and hack barn. Instead of it being Topeka as reported where Judge ABBOTT was on business last week, he informs us it was in Coffey Co., and the business was a real estate deal. Frank METZGER and hands left the first of the week, for his sawmill down on Big Slough creek. He reports a yard full of logs, and that, of course, with the fine weather makes him smile.

    1. [KSJEFFER] A Terrible Tragedy: QUEENA and others.
    2. Jim Laird
    3. The Oskaloosa Times Jefferson County Friday February 2, 1900 An Awful Tragedy. The news of the awful tragedy at Oklahoma City, Okla., which occurred the latter part of last week, came as a shock to many people living in this county. Tom QUEENA shot and killed his wife and then jumped fro a two story window to the ground injurying himself seriously. Mrs. Queena used to live with her parents near Winchester and was well known in Oskaloosa. Her name before marriage was Ella HOUSH. She was a daughter of Doc Housh, who is a brother to David Housh, the merchant, and Mrs. J.L. WRAY both of Oskaloosa. Ella was known as a handsome, well-behaved girl when she lived in Jefferson county and made friends wherever she went. No particulars have come from Oklahoma regarding the affair, other than that contaiined in the newspapers, but it is thought Queena's mind becmae deranged over losing a lot of money at gambling, and that in a moment of frenzy he committed the terrible deed. The tragedy leaves motherless a little child that was born as a result of the union.

Over ten years ago I did quite a bit of research on the Isaacs Family in Jefferson County, KS. Richard's (second or third?) wife was Elizabeth Isaacs. I was doing the research for Sandra Harris of California. This is a link to the WorldConnect database she put up. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:2087173&id=I12 There are also about 10 others databases with some informtion on Richard Beeler. Sandra's email address is posted with the database. You may want to contact her. This is a link to an on line biographical sketch published in 1883 in Cutler's History of Kansas (you may need to scroll down a bit) http://www.kancoll.org/books/cutler/jefferson/jefferson-co-p24.html#KAW_TOWNSHIP My memory is that there is also an obituary in the Topeka newspapers. Another researcher found it for Sandra, as I could not find one if Jefferson County, KS. Seems to me that I did look it up one time when I was at the KSHS library. Elazibeth's will is microfilmed, I remember reading it and some of the probate notes. You can ILL the film from the Kansas State Historical Society. Let me know if you need a link to look up the film number. I also remember going up to the Grantville Cemetery once. I think I took some pictures for Sandra, but that particular memory escapes me. There were a few Isaacs buried in both portions of the cemetery. I do not recall seeing a grave for Richard though. All of my on line notes for this research are gone, as the board we were using back then is long gone. :(( Dave Goldy Overland Park, KS Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [KSJEFFER] Eugene Snow? (& Smith Champion)
    2. The Oskaloosa Times for January 19, 1900, under the heading "Judge Dick's Court," says: During the past week, S Champion filed a final settlement as guardian of Eugene Snow and others. Undoubtedly "S Champion" is Smith Champion, my great-grandfather. But who might Eugene Snow and others have been? I checked the (June) 1900 census to see if I could find a connection, and the most likely family geographically seems to be that of G W Snow, a 21 year old farmer in Sarcoxie Twp, with a wife named "E Snow," who is 23. They have a son "E Snow," born January 1900 and thus "4/12" years of age in June. But this news item appeared the same month this kid would have been born. But he has parents living and doesn't seem like he would need guardians, especially if he was only two weeks old. (The Champions mostly seemed to live in Sarcoxie Twp.) There's a Charles Snow family in the 1905 Kansas census, living at McLouth in Union Twp, but their family doesn't include a Eugene. In Douglas County, on Delaware Street in the 2d precinct of Lawrence, I found some more Snows. In the March 1,1905, Kansas census there's a widow named Eldora Snow, who is 49, living with her children, Richard 21, Anna 18, and Eugene 10. If that's our Eugene, he would have been born c1895, so I suppose he could have had time to have a guardianship opened in a probate court, but why not in Douglas County? Does anybody out there claim any of these Snows? Is it possible to find out from the probate records who the "and others" might have been? Or what relationship Smith Champion might have had with the family? Did Smith Champion hold some kind of office in the community that would have made him a likely guardian for anybody? How would I go about finding out this kind of stuff? Jan Tompkins ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

It makes me very sad as he was my G.G.Grandfather whether I knew him or not. Actually my Mother who is 88 this July had told me that her Aunt told her that Ambrose killed himself, but I'm thinking she got that story wrong. Surely they both didn't kill themselves. Mother said her Grandpa Ambrose Beeler killed himself while in Kansas, and her Father Frank (Ambrose's son), drove his Mother,(Martha Smith Beeler) and siblings to South Mo. where she was reared, to be near her family. I went to the Topeka genealogy library a couple of years ago but didn't know enough about how to find info and was unable to find out where R.P. was buried, but I'll go back and look again. I bet he is buried in Topeka. I just have to keep looking.Ü I looked thru the cemetery books but they didn't have listings of graves in the outlying cemeteries, just the ones in town. You have no idea of how much I appreciate your help. Thank you so very much. Sharon Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: RichardWellman44 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.jefferson/569.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I did not find any record of Ambrose's death in Jefferson Co. Gen. Soc. obit file. However, found the following of R. P. Beeler. Unfortunately it sounds like an major mental health problem, but may explain why we don't find tombstone record for him. We do learn his date of death as 15 Oct. 1893. The Oskaloosa Independent, 21 Oct.1893 TOPEKA, KAS., Oct. 15.--R. P. Beeler, an old citizen of North Topeka, committed suicide this morning by shooting himself with a shotgun. It is presumed that his mind was unbalanced, as no direct cause can be assigned for his act. he prepared deliberately for his act by tying a string tothe leg of the kitchen stove and attaching it to the trigger of the gun. Then throwing himself at full length on the floor, he pulled the gun towards him, receiving the entire contents of the barrel in his breast and expiring instantly. He was 85 years old and had been married four times. Mr. Beeler lived in Kaw twp., this county, for a great many years, and had many friends who will be pained to hear of the above. [The 2nd paragraph appears in different type and was obviously added by the editor of the Oskaloosa Independent.] There is also a note on the death record card of Elizabeth Beeler that she is buried in "Old Grantville" cemetery. It is near the main cemetery NW of Grantville, but the old part is SW of the intersection of roads where the new cem. is NE of that intersection. Since he died in Topeka, there might be a record of his death in a Topeka newspaper. Richard P. Beeler, was an "original land-owner" in Jefferson Co. when he purchased at land auction the NE partial quarter of section 1, twp. 11, range 16 of 111 acres on 28 July 1857 at $1.50 per acre. R. P. Beeler appears on the 1880 and 1885 census records as living in Jefferson Co., so he had not lived in the Topeka more than 8 years. However, there are many records, particularly on Richard that lead me to believe he is probably buried in the Grantville cemetery. His second wife and some of the children are there. The compiled listing is based on tombstone readings and newspaper obituaries as there were no official death records kept until 1911. I do find that there are probate records for Richard, so a further check of them may give us indication of his death date. I will check when I have opportunity.
