    3. The Valley Falls Vindicator Wednesday September 3, 1941 Frank Shaffer Is Home. Frank SCHAFFER was brought home Thursday in the Hagge ambulance from a Kansas City hospital where he had been since suffering a broken hip a few weeks ago. He is now confined to his bed at home.

    3. The Valley Falls Vindicator Jefferson County Wednesday August 13, 1941 Thompson--Shultz. The marriage of Miss Donna Lee THOMPSON to Mr. Guy Reynolds SHULTZ of Lawrence took place Sunday afernoon at 4 o'clock at the First Christian Church in Lawrence. Donna Lee is the daughter of Mrs. Nan PIPER of Oakland, Calif., and Walter THOMPSON of Lawrence. Mr. Shultz is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy E. Shultz of Lawrence. The Rev. Harold G. Barr, pastor of the church, read the service and Miss Clarkson, church organist, played the wedding music and the accompanient for Mrs. Greever Allan of Tonganoxie, who sang preceding the ceremony. The chancel of the church was decorated with ferns and pink and white gladioli. The bride, a slender brunette, was charming in gown of white satin, fashioned with fitted bodies with sweetheart neckline and long sleeves with lace panel inserts. The long circular skirt ended in a short train which was trimmed with a panel of lace. Her fingertip veil fell from a halo of white satin, and she carried a bouquet of Talisman roses. Her attendants were the bride's cousin, Mrs. Wilma Sumpter, of Oskaloosa. Mrs. Don Shultz and Miss Virginia Shultz were gowned in blue floor length marqauisette dresses and Mrs. Shultz was frocked in peach marquisette. All wore flower clusters in their hair. Mr. Frank Reusch was best man for Mr. Shultz, and Mr. Allyn Underwood and Mr. Dan Bruce ushered. Mrs. Piper and Mrs. Shultz, mothers of the young couple, were gowned in navy blue sheer, with matching accessories and corsage bouquets of gardenias. The ceremony was followed by a reception held in the church parlors, with Mrs. Frank Reusch, Miss Betty Mae Shultz and Miss Gertrude Shultz assisting. Mr. Shultz and his bride left on a brief honeymoon trip and on their return will be at home in Lawrence, while their new farm home north of Lawrence is being completed. Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Delk, Mrs. Dola Thompson, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Shultz of Valley Falls were guests at the wedding.

    3. The Valley Falls Vindicator Jefferson County Wednesday July 30, 1941 Mrs. Chas. Brock Dies At Nortonville. Mrs. Charles A. BROCK, 70, died last Wednesday night at her home in Nortonville, after being ill six months with various complications. She spent her entire lifetime in the Nortonville and Potter vicinities. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Methodist church in Nortonville with the Rev. C.E. Nash in charge. Interment was in the Nortonville cemetery. Before her marriage to Charles A. Brock, June 4, 1891, Mrs. Brock was Miss Flora Ann MAUZEY. She was a daughter of Lafayette and Sarah Ann Mauzey, early pioneers, and was born on a farm near Potter, March 10, 1871. She and Mr. Brock, who is a very well known trader, have lived in Nortonville since 1903. Mrs. Brock was a member of the Nortonville Methodist church and a teacher in its Sunday school more than 25 years. She was greatly beloved by the people of Nortonville and had many friends in both Atchison and Jefferson counties. Surviving besides her husband are her daughter, Mrs. Edith LANTER, of the home; a brother, Oscar Mauzey, Nortonville and two grandchildren, Keith and Dorothy Jean Lanter.

    3. The Valley Falls Vindicator Wednesday July 23, 1941 Undergoes Operation. Jack EVANS, son of Mr. and Mrs. Armstead Evans, underwent an operation on his right foot at a Kansas City hospital last week. He returned home Tuesday, but it will be some time before he will be able to be about. Before the operation he had been on crutches for several months.

    3. The Valley Falls Vindicator Jefferson County Wednesday July 16, 1941 George W. Young. George W. YOUNG, 69, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday nighht in a Topeka hospital after an illnes of several years. He formerly lived on a farm near Winchester and was a past master of the Winchester Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Viola Young; two daughters, Mrs. Madeline EDMONDS, of Oskaloosa and Mrs. J.E. DONNELLY of Topeka; a son, Thomas Young, of Topeka; two grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Sarah LAWLESS of Winchester; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel SWOYER of Oskaloosa and Mrs. Ellen NIXON of Rocky Ford, Colo., and a half-brother, Paul Lawless of Cincinnati, Ohio. Funeral services wil lbe Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Oskaloosa Methodist church with burial in the Wise cemetery at Winchester.

    3. The Valley Falls Vindicator Jefferson County Wednesday July 16, 1941 Tim Payne, Old Time Resident Dies. Timothy PAYNE, 83, who died Sunday, July 13, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.O. BRANDENBURG, Florence, Colo., was born in Ohio, January 30, 1858. Payne had been in the fire insurance business in Topeka since 1921 when he moved his offices of the Threshermen's Mutual Fire Insurance Co., which he organized and of which he was secretary-treasurer here in Oskaloosa. After 1925 he operated a fire insurance agency until his health failed. He was an ardent church worker, serving as elder for many years. Upon transferring his membership from Oskaloosa to the Third Presbyterian church here he was installed as elder here in April 1928, in which capacity he served for twelve years. Elders of the Third Presbyterian church, who will act as honorary pallbearers are John B. Norton, I. H. Ellenberger, Carl Turner, J.L. Croco, and Garritt Barker. Surviving are a son, William A. Payne of Oskaloosa,; and three daughters, Mrs. J.O. Brandenburg; Mrs. Andrew E. YALE, and Mrs. Merritt YALE of Grinnell; Mrs. H.T. STEVENS, Topeka; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Peebler Funeral Home, North Topeka, with Dr. J.E. Bartholomew officiating. Burial was in the Oskaloosa cemetery.

    3. The Valley Falls Vindicator Jefferson County Wednesday July 16, 1941 Death of a Former Resident. Mrs. Mary GRAY, aged 79, died at her home in Kansas City Friday, July 11th. She was the widow of Thos. Gray. She leaves her two daughters, Mrs. Effie McCAULEY of Hugo, Colo., and Miss Pearl Gray of the home. The Grays will be well remembered by older residents although they left Valley Falls about 30 years ago. They owned a restaurant here for a long time. The funeral was at the Freeman Chapel in Kansas City at 3:30 Saturday afternoon and burial was in Forest Hill cemetery.

    3. The Valley Falls Vindicator Wednesday July 16, 1941 Mother Injured in Fall. Mrs. Rhoda McCOY, who suffered an injured hip in a fall at her home in Nortonville last week, is getting along as well as could be expected. Her daughter, Mrs. Jessie STAFFORD, has been spending some time with her. Mrs. McCoy is 83 years of age and was one of the pioneers of the "Leavenworth road."

The Valley Falls Vindicator Jefferson County Wednesday July 9, 1941 Bessie CORY, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George GILMORE, was born on January 2, 1890, and departed this life June 30, 1941, at the age of 51 years, 5 months and 28 days. She grew to womanhood in the community just west of Hamburg where she spent her entire life. Mrs. Cory had not been in good health for some time, but her death came as a sudden shock to her friends and relatives. She was a faithful member of the Baptist church, having become a member of that church in her early childhood, and was always known as a true and devout christian. On July 19, 1931, she was united in marriage to Mr. Alvin Cory, and since that time she and her husband had lived on the farm where she spent her childhood. Besides her husband and her aged mother, she leaves to mourn her passing one brother, Abner Gilmore, of Longmont, Colo., two sisters, Leta Gilmore and Elma SPIEGEL, both of Hamburg, besides many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Hamburg Baptist church at 2 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. J. Gilbert Hutchinson. Interment was made in the Hamburg cemetery.--The Hamburg (Iowa) Reporter.

    3. The Valley Falls Vindicator Jefferson County Wednesday July 9, 1941 Richard Ross Allen. Richard Ross ALLEN, aged 32, died Tuesday, June 24 at the Clay Center hospital. Mr. Allen was born at Rock Creek, Jefferson county, Kansas, in 1908. He lived there until he was 9 years old and then moved to Topeka with his family. He lived in Topeka until he started to work for the Hill Packing company at Clay Center. The body was brought to Horton where the funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. in the First Presbyterian church. Rev. I. C. Jones was in charge of the services. The body was taken to Valley Falls for burial. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Margaret LEE of Rocky Ford, COlo., Mrs. Helen LINCOLN, of Topeka, and Mrs. Wynona ARNOLD of Bellview, Kansas. There are also three brothers--Dan and David of Horton and Thomas of Topeka as well as many other relatives.--Tri County News.

Since Pearl Harbor Day is December 7th, 1941, and the declaration of war against Japan was December 8th, 1941, the 1941 class graduated 6-1/2 months before Pearl Harbor and although war was stirring, it should not have greatly affected the composition of the 1941 class.     3. The Valley Falls Vindicator Wednesday May 14, 1941 Condition Is Serious. The condition of Mrs. Paul MARTIN, who underwent an operation at a Topeka hospital last week, is serious. She had blood tranfusions the last of the week and although she has improved, her condition is still serious.

    3. The Valley Falls Vindicator Jefferson County Wednesday April 23, 1941 Lust--Hull Wedding. (Taken from the Denver Post, April 6th) Miss Evelyn LUST, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Lust, of 3660 S. Huron and Eldon HULL, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Hull, of Valley Falls, Kansas, were married Sunday at 4 o'clock at the Swedish Immanuel Church in Denver, Colorado. Rev. Gray officiated at the single ring ceremony in the presence of about 75 members of the church, relatives and friends. The bride was given in marriage by her father, Eric Lust, and wore a street-length dress of syn blue with navy and white accessories. Her corsage was of red rosebuds and yellow iris. She was attended by Mrs. Florence Yausky, who wore a street-length dress of rose with blue accessories and carried roses. Larry VanHole served as best man. Both he and the groom wore dark business suits with red boutonnieres. After the wedding, a reception was held in the church parsonage, followed by a dinner party given at Bennets for the members of bridal party, friends and relatives. Mrs. Hull was graduated from the local high school last spring and before her graduation was a popular membr of the student body. Mr. Hull was graduated from the Valley Falls high school in 1938 and since coming to Denver has been employed at Gates. The couple will make their home at 1632 So. Grant, Englewood, Colorado.
