The Hoyt Sentinel Jackson County Saturday April 26, 1902 Train Wrecked. On Tuesday about 4:20 a.m. the third section of a special freight train overtook the second section when about two and a half miles south of Hoyt. THe second section had suddenly stopped by the main rod of the engine No. 18 droping down and smashing the air-brake pipe. The flagman of No. 2 did not have time to signal No. 3, when it came bounding along at a rate of 35 or 40 miles an hour, crashing into No. 2's caboose and other cars. The engine was thrown twenty feet down the embankment and turned over; the caboose, a dead-head cabaoose and three cars of merchandise were wrecked. Five lengths of rails were twisted and broken. The road superintendent and a wrecking crew and train came down from Horton about 9 a.m. and the road was in fix again in about four or five hours.
