The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday November 29, 1917 Frank Cadue, Indian, Gives Life for U.S.A. To Mayetta goes the honor of furnishing the first Kansas man to give his life in defense of his country in the present conflict, according to a cablegram received by the war department and information forwarded to Supt. A.R. Snyder of the Agency. Frank CADUE, a full-blooded Potawatomie Indian, known here as a quiet, non-communicative sort of a boy, sacrificed his life for world democracy. Soon after the declaration of war against Germany young Cardue endeavored to enlist at the army recruiting station at Topeka, but was rejected. He was so anxious to join the colors at the front, however, he went to St. Joseph and begged the recruiting officers to enlist him in the army. He was accepted and assigned to Company E, Third Missouri Infantry. Information received at Washington did not disclose the cause of Cadue's death, but it is presumed he died as a result of gun shot wounds. The time of his death in France was Nov. 5.
