    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday June 7, 1917 Cyclone Hits Elmont. A cyclone hit Elmont, the second station south of Mayetta on the Rock Island, late Tuesday afternoon, which demolished nearly every building there. The depot was wrecked, seriously injuring the agent; the church and school house wiped out. Those killed by the storm which passed thru four counties--Wabausee, Shawnee, Jefferson and Douglas, were: John WINTER, aged 50, near Elmont; Sherman ARCHER, 40, near Menoken; Alonzo ANDREWS, 60, near Menoken; Tommie MONROE, 10, at Clinton; John ELLIOTT, 54, near Meriden. Bert PETERS, Fred WATERS, Clarence GRUBBS, and Joe DOWNIE from Mayetta, went to Elmont on the evening train, walking back, and they report the complete destruction of the town, only one house left intact. The agent and a store keeper were seriously hurt. The storm struck so suddenly that escape to cellars was cut off. Most everybody here saw the tornado and many fled to or near cellars. The wind here bordered onto a tornado and the clouds were fierce looking. Not only in the cyclone's path were great property and crop losses, reports are coming in from all around here of damages wrought and narrow escapes from death. The rain was heavy and much damage by washing and covering the corn. Heavy hail fell near here too.
