Hello List, I have found the sexton of the Circleville Cemetery. Arlene, of Milwaukie, gave us the sexton's name in the information she typed up for us about this cemetery. Today, Monday, I called and talked to Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. They gave me the name of the sexton as "Doris Rash", and her phone number at work. She works at the Post Office in Circleville. She wasn't at work today, as her husband has just undergone major heart surgery (5 bypasses and a valve repair), but I was able to contact her at home. My kin were mostly buried in the Circleville Cemetery before 1925, and I believe Arlene typed that the "register of interments has been maintained since 1925". Doris used the book "Monumental Inscriptions from Jackson County, Kansas, Cemeteries", by Allen Gardiner to give me information on my kin. I didn't ask, but assume the actual records a cemetery usually keeps in their books were not available for the really early period prior to 1925. Doris would probably be using the same book to look up anyone who was buried there before 1925. She gave me permission to give the list her address, and she will try to help you with what she has. It may take her a little bit to answer, especially now that her husband is just out of surgery. Your letters will get to her at: Doris Rash C/O Circleville Post Office Circleville, KS 66416 When writing Doris, please give remember to give her as much information as possible. The approximate date of birth and death would really help, and don't forget that self addressed stamped envelope. I don't know if there is a photocopy machine in the really small town of Circleville, and Holton is about 10-12 miles away. Doris also told me that Anna Wilhelm, of the Jackson County Historical Society, is someone we could contact to do Jackson County research. According to a book I have called "The Genealogist's Address Book" (1998), I have the following information about this society: Jackson County Historical Society 4th Street and New York Avenue P O Box 104 Holton, KS 66436 Phone: (785) 364-2087 Anna Wilhelm, Board Member; Mildred E Francis, Volunteer Director Hours: Fri-Sat 10:00 - 4:00, Sun 2:00 - 4:00 Publish: JCHS Newsletter, quarterly search fee: $25.00 for first two hours, $8.00 for each half hour thereafter. Doris also said the early obits from the Holton Recorder were on microfilm, and as the Holton Recorder URL site said, those were at the Kansas Museum of History, 6425 SW 6th Ave. in Topeka. She also mentioned another newspaper being in the area a long time ago. She wasn't sure of the exact name or when it was published but part of the name was "Signal". I hope this will help those of you who were interested in Circleville Cemetery. I want to thank all of you who contacted me "off list" and gave me helpful suggestions, encouragement, and who gave me answers about my family buried at the cemetery, and Arlene in Milwaukie....a new cousin by marriage, who took the time to type up the information on the Circleville Cemetery.
