Hello List, I've had some people from the list contact me regarding my Circleville Cemetery posting for information on my Mary "Polly" Caroline (Campbell) Steele Thomas, and her mother Ruth Campbell. Those who contacted me were also searching for information and one did give me a suggestion for my search. So, I'm writing the list regarding what I have found thus far, and the steps I'm taking. Maybe someone else can advise some further avenue of search. Since Holton is the county seat for Jackson County, and only about 10-12 miles away from Circleville, I looked for and found the name of a newspaper published and circulated in the area. I found the "Holton Recorder". They have a web page which lists obits and retains them in their online file for about 10 days. http://www.holtonrecorder.com/holton/obits.html One obit mentioned the graveside service on March 3, 2000 held at Circleville Cemetery, with Mercer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. I found two locations for a funeral home by this name. One was in Holton, at the address: 4th & Montana Ave., Holton, KS 66436. I used the URL of Switchboard to find the address. http://www.switchboard.com It may be "possible" that this funeral home manages the Circleville Cemetery, as I have run into this type of cemetery management before, in another State. The following information was given by the Holton Recorder regarding their "archives" and back issues: Archives For more information on viewing back issues of the Holton Recorder, contact the Kansas Museum of History, 6425 SW 6th Ave. in Topeka, or call them at (785) 272-8681. You may also contact us at (785) 364-3141, or Email us at [email protected] I sent a request to this Email address, but haven't heard anything yet today, Saturday. I called the main public library here in Portland, and asked about a possible reference book listing all the cemeteries and funeral homes in the USA. There was such a book but they couldn't find a listing for the Circleville Cemetery. I called two of the major cemeteries in our area and their suggestion was to call the Mortuary Cemetery Board on Monday and ask them. They assured me I should be able to get the name of the sexton and address of the cemetery. On Friday, I also sent an Email to the State Historical Society in Topeka, Kansas, but haven't recieived any response as yet. They were able to help me on a previous question about the Regimental History and Roster for my g grandfather's Civil War regiment, the 5th Kansas Volunteer. Cav, Co. A. There was a suggestion that I also contact the Chamber of Commerce, probably located in Holton, Kansas, on Monday, and they may be able to supply the information on Circleville and the cemetery. This I will try to do on Monday. For those of you who may not have found this URL, it is a great one on the History of the State of Kansas, written by William G. Cutler, in the late 1880's. Under Jackson County, part 7, there are notes on Circleville and some (a very few) biographical sketches. Two of the sketches were of interest to me. http://history.cc.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/books/cutler/ Hope this helps to give some of you who contacted me some other avenues of search.
