Misses Lucy HUNTER and Esther JENSEN Sundayed with the Misses HANSON. Mr. and Mrs. A.J. HUNTER and Mrs. H.D. JONES went to St. Joseph Wednesday to buy goods for the Miller Mercantile Co. Mrs. John TORK of Holton visited her daughter, Mrs. R.L. MILLER Tuesday. R.L. MILLER had several head of hogs vaccinated last Tuesday.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday June 22, 1916 A Surprise Party. A surprise party was held Saturday evening, June 17, at the home of J.W. Laird in honor of Mr. Laird's 51st birthday. Mr. Laird received many beautiful presents. An enjoyable evening was spent. Refreshments of ice cream and cake were served. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. L. M. AKERS and grandson, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. MORRIS and son, Mr. and Mrs. Ed SLATTERY and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ern HANSBEARY and family, Mr. and Mrs. HITCHCOCK, Mr. and Mrs. Scott GOODREL and son, Mr. and Mrs. George PATTERSON and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ray GOODREL, Mrs. L.H. DAVIDSON, Mrs. T.J. FRASIER and daughter, Marie and sons, Harry and Alvin, Miss Florence HERDE and Elmer Herde, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred McFARLAND and son. They departed for thier homes at a late hour wishing Mr. Laird many more happy birthdays.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday June 22, 1916 Married. On Tuesday morning, Mr. Harry D. JONES and Miss Nellie WHELAN of Mayetta were united in marriage at the Catholic parsonage in Holton at nine o'clock, Father Genintz, officiating. They left on the 10:20 Rock Island train for Kansas City where they will spend a few days after which they will return to Mayetta to make their future home. Mr. Jones is assistant cashier in the First National bank at this place and a young man of many sterling qualities. The bride is one of Mayetta's fairest daughters. The Herald joins their numerous host of friends in wishing them a long and happy life.

The order of the Kansas Public Utilities Commission to continue free service between Mayetta and Holton goes into effect June 1st. Each call is limited to three minutes with a toll charge of five cents for each additional minute. Please assist our operators by your cooperation. During the month of June our Exchange will be open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Only urgent calls should be put in between 5 and 6 in the morning and between 9 and 10 at night.     3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday June 8, 1916 Mary LILLY was born in Blyton, England, June 18, 1840, and died at Mayetta, Kansas, June 2, 1916, aged 75 years, 11 months and 14 days. She came her with her parents to America at the age of 11 years. They settled in Ohio where she grew to womanhood. In 1883 she came with her sister's family to Brown county, Kansas. In 1907, they moved to Mayetta. She leaves behind two brothers, G.A. Lilly of Merkel, Texas, and Thomas Lilly of Dell Rapids, South Dakata, and one sister, Mrs. George BETCHER of Mayetta, with whom she had made her home.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday May 18, 1916 Hoyt Doctor Dead. Dr. J.W. PETTIJOHN, a pioneer physician of Hoyt, Kan., died Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock at his home, west of Hoyt. Dr. Pettijohn had been a resident of Hoyt for over thirty years and practiced until two years ago, when he retired to his farm. He was also one of the largest landownerss in Jackson county, owning 2000 acres near Hoyt and much property in the town. He was 83 years old and is survived by a son, Will Pettijohn, of Hoyt. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from his home. Burial will be in the Hoyt cemetery.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday May 4, 1916 Wm. M. WILSON died at Topeka, Kas., Tuesday, April 25, 1916. Mr. Wilson was born at Waukegan, Ill., Dec. 20,1852. He came to Kansas in 1865 and has lived in Jackson county ever since. He is survived by three sisters--Mrs. Ella ZERSE of Danville, Ill.; Mrs. John MYERS, of Holton, Kas.; Mrs. A.B. BRADLEY of Pasadena, Cal.; and three brothers--J.E. Wilson and O.J. Wilson of Topeka, Kas.; and Chas. Wilson, of Pine Bluff, Neb. He lives in their memories as is the memories of many, as a brother who was so quiet and spent and loved for his kindness and thoughtfulness of others. Funeral services were held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Cedar Grove cemetery, Mayetta, conducted by Rev. A. L. Plowman.

A young man with $4.25 in his pocket, who took his blushing lady love to the office of the probate judge yesterday with the expectation of buying a license and getting married, was saved from an embarrasing situation by the girl. She came to his aid with enough change to make his total $6, the cost of the license and the marriage fee. The bride's assistance was in the form of a "loan," which the groom faithfully promised to return. Court attaches were speculating afterward whether he would or not.--Capital.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday May 4, 1916 A paragraph is going the rounds about a girl dying from tight lacing. An editor commenting on the fact says: Those corsets should be done away with and if the girl can't live without being squeezed we suppose men could be found who would sacrifice themselves. As old as we are we'd rather devote three hours a day, without a farthing of pay, as a prevent corset, then seeing these girls dying in that manner. Office hours almost any time.
