He evidently is no gentleman, for he took only the big ones, leaving us the runts. Come again brother--just one more time will do. We are prepared to leave a few marks of identification on you and take it from us we will brand your old hide so deep that you may be easily identified as long as you are permitted to inhabit this earthly sphere.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday January 2, 1918 Lawson T. Davis. Lawson T. DAVIS, who has been ailing with typhoid fever the past few weeks, died at his home on the reservation Monday about noon. He leaves a widow and three children and had lived in this vicinity all his life adn was well and favorably known.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday January 2,1918 Death of Jack Dunn. Jack DUNN, a well known young man, age 22, died at Fort Sill, Okla., Dec. 20, where he was training to go to France in a few weeks. He was buried in the old Saint Clair grave yard. He leaves one sister, and three brothers, a father and mother and many friends to mourn his loss.

The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday December 26, 1917 Pilander GRINNELL, was born in Massachuetts, Feb. 26, 1829, and died in Mayetta, Kansas, Dec. 21, 1917, aged 88 years, 9 months, and 26 days. He was married to Anna RICE, five children being born to this union--Mary KONKOSKIE, Eliza, Frank, Ona and Maude GRINNELL, the latter dying in infancy. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 o'clock at the M.E. church, conducted by Rev. A.L. Plowman. The music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mesdames S.S. Jones, and Olive Slattery and Messrs. J.W. Watkins and T.J. Landon, Miss Aldene Lewis at the piano. A large number of friends attended the funeral. Grandpa Grinnell was a kind, uncomplaining, cheerful, Christian gentleman and attended Sunday school and church services whenever he was able.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday December 26, 1917 Death of Mrs. Aitkens. The funeral services of Mrs. Lucy Aitkins, who died last Saturday, were held at St. Mary's of the Snow church on the reservation Monday, Father Geinitz officiating. Same Newspaper: January 2, 1918 Lucy EYTAN AITKENS was born in Jackson county, Kas., May 6, 1896, and died at her home, 9 miles northwest of Mayetta, on Friday, Dec. 21, 1917. She was married to George M. AITKENS, to this union four children were born, the first child living only a short time; Cecilia, age 5 years; Mary Helen, age 2 years, and Velma Lucile, a little over 2 months. Funeral service was held at 10 o'clock at St. Mary's church on the reservation Monday 24th, conducted by Father Geinitz. Her body was laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery by her infant child. She leaves a loving husband, three bright children and a host of relatives and friend to mourn her loss. May she rest in peace.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday November 29, 1917 Hoyt Man Dies. Isaac MULFORD, at one time employed at the Agency here, died Thursday at his home in Hoyt. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence. Burial in the Hoyt cemetery.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday November 29, 1917 Frank Cadue, Indian, Gives Life for U.S.A. To Mayetta goes the honor of furnishing the first Kansas man to give his life in defense of his country in the present conflict, according to a cablegram received by the war department and information forwarded to Supt. A.R. Snyder of the Agency. Frank CADUE, a full-blooded Potawatomie Indian, known here as a quiet, non-communicative sort of a boy, sacrificed his life for world democracy. Soon after the declaration of war against Germany young Cardue endeavored to enlist at the army recruiting station at Topeka, but was rejected. He was so anxious to join the colors at the front, however, he went to St. Joseph and begged the recruiting officers to enlist him in the army. He was accepted and assigned to Company E, Third Missouri Infantry. Information received at Washington did not disclose the cause of Cadue's death, but it is presumed he died as a result of gun shot wounds. The time of his death in France was Nov. 5.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday Ocotber 18, 1917 Death of Mrs. Rice. Mrs. Richard RICE died at her home in Mayetta, October 13, age 43 years. Funeral services were held Monday at 9 o'clock at the Mayetta Catholic church, conducted by Father Geinitz. Interment in the Catholic cemetery on the Reservation. Mrs. Rice was the wife of the Reservation policeman, and had, for years served as official interpreter at the Potawatomi Agency. She was a good wife and devoted mother.

The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday October 11, 1917 Nettie Blanche HAWN, eldest daughter of Albert and Nancy HAWN, deceased, was born at Huntington, Penn., Dec. 16, 1872, died Oct. 5, 1917, at her home in Wichita, Kas. In June, 1896, at the dedication of the Christian church at Mayetta, she confessed Christ as her personal Saviour, and has since lived in consistent follower of the meek and lowly Christ. March 21, 1906, she was united in marriage to Thomas NEWMAN, after which time she has made her home in Wichita. SHe leaves to mourn her untimely death, her devoted husband, one son, John Lindsey, who lives in Kansas City; two brothers, Byron of Topeka, and Roy of Mayetta; four sisters, Mrs. E.H. KESSINGER of Rozel, Kas., Mrs. D.S. FRONK of Elmwood, Okla., Mrs. J.L. BALES of Denison, Kas., and Miss Allie HAWN of Mayetta. Funeral services were held at the Wichita undertaking parlors at 8:45 Sunday morning by her pastor, Walter S. Priest, after which the body was taken to Hoyt, Kas., for burial. A short service was held immediately after the 4 o'clock train arrived, at Hoyt in the Baptist church, conducted by Frank G. Richards, of the Holton Christian church. The music was furnished by a quarter consisting of Mrs. Allison, Miss Mary Bonsal, Mr. Wm. Woodhead and Mr. Rube Burns. Mrs. Fultz at the piano. The pallbearers were, Harry M. Reist, Hoffa Smith, Albert Hunter, Frank Oldweilder, and Chester Moore. Burial was made in the Hoyt cemtery beside her father and mother. Card of Thanks. We desire to express our heartfelt thanks to all who so kindly assisted us in word and deed during our late bereavement in the death of our wife and sister. Thomas H. Newman, Roy and Allie Hawn.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday September 13, 1917 Mrs. P.B. SWANK passed away at her home east of town last week. Two months ago Mrs. Swank was assisting her husband putting hay in the barn and was driving the horse, when a tug of the harness broke, letting one end of the singletree fly back and hit her in the abdomen. She sustained injuries which resulted in her death.

    3. The Mayetta Herald Jackson County Thursday September 12, 1917 Nora JONES was born Sept. 10, 1872, at South Cedar, and died Sept. 3, 1917, lacking seven days of being 46 years old. About 25 years ago she was converted and united with the Methodist church and during this time she has been a zealous worker for her Master. She was married Dec. 1, 1904, to Chas. GREEN. To them were born two children, Alfred C. and Helen May. She leaves a husband, two children, mother, two sisters and two brothers. The deceased lived at Valley Falls for the past six years. Funeral services were held at the Mayetta Methodist church Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 10 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Crippen.
