The Anthony Weekly Bulletin Harper County Friday March 12, 1897 His Neck Broken. A fatal accident occurred on the O'KEEFE ground this forenoon resulting in the dath of C.G. POTTER, a well known Webb City miner. The deceased was working in the bottom of an 80 foot shaft in company with his brother, T.B. POTTER, and between 9 and 10 o'clock this morning they sent up the empty tub for a cup of water and when within ten feet of the top the tub became detached fro the rope and fell upon the two brothers below. C.G. POTTER was standing where the tub came down and it struck him squarely upon the head. T.B. POTTER was stooping and the tub landed upon his shoulders. He saw his brother falling and caught him in his arms. As he was falling the unfortunate man asked, "What's the matter?" and expired withing a few minutes, his neck having been broken. The body was hoisted out of the shaft and word was sent to Undertaker FLETCHER who went out and brought it to his undertaking rooms on Joplin street. A message was sent to Webb City for Coroner WHITELY, but he had gone ! to Carthage and the inquest was postponed until this evening. Decease dwas born in 1851 and had been working in the mines of Joplin and Webb City for a number of years. The shaft in which he was killed is one that is being sunk by his two brothers and he also had an interest in it. Being a practical miner he came over from Webb this morning and had gone to work in the shaft for the first time. He leaves a wife but no children. --Joplin, (Mo.) Daily News, Monday March 8th. T.B. POTTER will be remembered by our citizens as a former fireman on the 'Frisco, and who lost his position because he couldn't read orders.

The Anthony Weekly Bulletin Harper County Friday March 5, 1897 In Great Demand "It is almost impossible to rent a farm in Harper county." The above remark was made in our hearing lately, and at the time we wondered if it was not an over drawn statement. Inquity among the real estate men show that there is considerable truth in the statement. For the past six months there has been a steady demand for farm lands in this county, until now there are but few good farms with houses on them that can be rented. It shows two things; first, that the people have renewed their faith in Harper county farm land, and that conditions in a measure justify their belief. At the present time we have a most excellent prospect for a wheat crop; the plant is in good condition and the ground is in better shape than it has been in years at this season of the year. Other lines of business are overworked and farming and cattle raising promise to be as remunerative as any other kind of business. The demand for farm lands comes from Eastern people and from people who were formerly! residents of this county and who count it as one of the great mistakes of their lives when they left here. With an influx of careful, capable farmers the condition of the county must change for the better. The Bulletin welcomes the return of the wanderer and the advent of the new citizen and we sincerely trust that their anticipations may be realized. Harper county is famous as a health resort; is growing in favor as a corn and cattle country, and with a united effort on the part of all her citizens should be able in a measure to recoup the losses we have sustained in the past five years.
