He was the son of Marvel Preston and Margaret Appleby Mitchell. After attending public schools in Greenwood County he attended Ottawa University and Grand Island Business College in Nebraska. He worked a few years as a bookkeeper for the Santa Fe Railroad, then spent approximately 60 years as a stockman and farmer in Greenwood County. On December 25, 1923 he was married to Ruby I. Standiferd at Emporia. In his younger years Mr. Mitchell was active in township and school affairs. He was known to help anyone who was willing to help themselves. Survivors include his wife, Ruby; two sons, Merle S. of Eureka and James Preston of Sterling, Colorado; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; three daughters-in-law; and a sister, Cynthia Ross of Emporia. He was preceded in death by a brother, Bell A., and son, Wilbur E. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. R.F. Schaechtele, were held from Campbell Funeral Home, October 22, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery.
