MYRTLE HORTON DIES IN HOSPITAL Mrs. Myrtle B. Horton of Madison died at the Newman hospital at Emporia at 9:45 o’clock Saturday evening, June 19, 1954. she had been critically ill for the past four months. Funeral services were held from the Lena Valley Methodist church Tuesday morning, June 22, at 10 o’clock in charge of Rev. C. F. Jenkins, pastor of the Gridley Methodist church. Music was by Shirley Carson, Janet Off, Ermil Kay Ott, Marjorie Schmultz, and Nelda Storrer, accompanied by Mrs. Mabel Blanck. Casket bearers were Levi Ott, Harry Tatman, Roy Smith, J. O. Wilson, Charles Roberts and Ross Taylor. Interment was in the Lena Valley cemetery. Mrs. Horton was born in Appleton City, MO., September 6, 1874, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Beach. She moved to Lena Valley, northeast of Madison, in 1884, and was married to John R. Horton, February 28, 1897. They farmed in the Lena Valley community until retiring and moving to Madison in 1947. She is survived by her husband, of the home, three children, Wright Horton, Thayer, Mrs. Mary Thomas, Estacada, Ore, and Roy Horton, Canon City, Colo; one sister Mrs. Larcy Williams, Emporia; two brothers, Rufus Beach, Wichita and Reuben Beach, Reese; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Two children preceding her in death, Elsie dying in infancy in 1906, and Elton in 1938. Four brothers also preceded her in death. She was a member of the Methodist church of Lena Valley and a charter member of Summit camp, Royal Neighbors of America.
