He was born March 19, 1926, at Reading, the son of Benjamin Eugene and Ruby Irene (Standiferd) Mitchell. He was raised in the Hamilton community and was a 1944 graduate of Hamilton High School. Merle entered the U.S. Army serving in the Rhineland Campaign during World War II where he received a purple heart. He was discharged in July 1946. On September 19, 1946, Merle was united in marriage to Eda F. Matlock at the First United Methodist Church in Emporia. They made their home in the Hamilton area where he was an oil field contractor and rancher. He was a member of the Hamilton United Methodist Church and held membership in the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 8, VFW Post 2712, American Legion, Military Order of the Purple Heart, the 94th Infantry Division Association and the Hamilton Lions Club. Survivors include his wife, Eda of the home; two sons, Standiferd Eugene Mitchell of Eureka and Douglas Harold Mitchell of Hamilton; three grandsons; one granddaughter; a brother, James Preston Mitchell of Sterling, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Wilbur E. Mitchell in 1970, and one grandson, Cameron Michael Mitchell in 1992. Funeral services were held July 31 at the Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home in Eureka with Rev. Willie Jones, pastor of the Hamilton United Methodist Church officiating. Interment followed at the Janesville Cemetery at Hamilton. Memorials have been established in his name with the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 8 and the Hamilton United Methodist Church. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
