I am looking for Pierre Louis Charles CLERC, who immigrated from France in 1887 and lived in Kansas until 1892. The remainder of his years were spent in Jefferson County, MO, where he made a living 'making' , packaging and selling his products, such as stove polish. He did quite a business with poultry products - from feed to medications. Usually these types of things are documented in the county's history. If anyone can guide me as to where to find this information, I would appreciate it. Thank you, Kay, FL MehdiFakhar@aol.com

    1. RE: NELSON, Thomas & Cintheely
    2. Rhonda Hansch
    3. The following is transcribed from page 292 of Volume I of The History of Greenwood County Kansas. I believe this to be the same Thomas Nelson. The Nelson Family Thomas Nelson was the second son of John and Catherine (Young) Nelson. He was born in 1834. His older brother was John Young Nelson, the Indian Guide, scout and interpreter, who married Red Cloud, the daughter of the great Sioux leader, Chief Sitting Bull. In the middle 1800's Thomas married Centheely M. (Kennedy) Wagoner near Louisburg, Kansas. To this union four children were born: John William Nelson, Charles Thomas Nelson, Catherine Nelson (Rice), and Emma Nelson (Haskins). John W. and Catherine were tiwns. During their childhood, the Nelson children grew uup on the family farm in Miami County, Kansas, with one half-brother, James Wagoner, and one half-sister, Melvina Wagoner. These were Centheely's children by a previous marriage. Thomas brought his family to Greenwood County around 1879 and settled on a farm southwest of Climax. They later moved to a farm east of Climax, and from there to Neal, where they resided for many years. Later in life Thomas and Centheely moved into Eureka, where they lived up until her death in 1914. Centheely (Kennedy) Nelson was born in 1834. After his wife's death, Thomas moved to Colorado, where he proved 160 acres of land southwest of Lamar. It was in Colorado that Thomas died in 1918. He was brought back to Greenwood County for burial with Centheely in the Greenwood Cemetery. John William Nelson was born on November 8, 1867, in Miami County, Kansas, where he lived until he was 12 years old and then moved to Greenwood County with his family. He was married to Miss Rosa Anna Hallet on August 25, 1889, at the Spring Valley Church near Neal. Rosa Anna was the daughter of Thomas R. Hallett and Margaret R. (Barnes) Hallet. She was born on September 18, 1869, in Greenwood County, They made their first home near Climax and later moved to Neal, where John W. owned the livery stable for many years. John and Rosa had eight children: Mary Ethel, Chester Arthur, James Fredrick, Francis Lacretia, Gladys Centilia, Hazel Ellen, Pearl Leotta and Ruth Evalyn. In 1906 John moved to Perry, Oklahoma, where he farmed cotton for several years until he moved his family in 1912 to Colorado in a covered wagon. He proved 320 acres of land southwest of Lamar near the land his father hadproved some years earlier. Later in life John and Rosa moved back to Greenwood County, this is where they lived for the rest of their lives. John W. took a job as janitor for the Neal school district. Rosa Anna Nelson died on January 25, 1954, and John on November 12, 1959. There are still some of John and Rosa's children living in or near Greenwood County; Mrs. Gladys Nelson Williams of Eureka, Mrs. Hazel Nelson Butler of Eureka, and Mrs. Ruth Nelson Pickens of El Dorado, Kansas. Submitted by Jydy Pugh-Owne There is also a picture of of John William Nelson and Rosa Anna with 7 of their children in the book, taken about 1907. Chester is not pictured among the children. It is too bad that my grandmother died three years ago. She grew up in Neal and her parents were among some of the beginners in Neal. My great-grandfather Edward Stephen Mattingly owned the hardware store and lumber yard. My great-grand Lilly May (Flummer) Mattingly took in school-teachers in Neal as boarders. I sure they would have known your family. I know I recognize the name Gladys Nelson. Either my grandmother has spoken of her or she is one of the volunteers at the History Center in Eureka, Kansas. These books are still available for purchase through the Greenwood County Historical Society.
