It doesn't appear that Madison had a newspaper in the 1860's. Even the county seat newspaper the Eureka Herald wasn't founded until 1868. (I checked the available newspapers at the Kansas State Historical Society site.) I do have an index to the Emporia KS newspaper (which was about 20 miles north) I checked the Index to the Emporia News from 1859 to 1865 and didn't find a listing for the name Ashpole. The only thing I can think of to help you might be land records at the courthouse in Eureka, in the event her husband sold land at the time of her death and it shows something there. Good luck in your search! Gayle
Hello List, Here is another obituary I am looking for. Where would I find an obituary or death notice occurring in after March of 1862? The person I am looking for is George Ashpole; born 23 March 1862 at Willow Creek, Greenwood Co, Kansas. He was the son of Thomas and Mary Anne Ashpole, from England. All that I know is that he died young, before the family left for Oregon in May 1865. Any ideas gratefully received. Thank you, Loretta

They are Thomas ASHPOLE (about 33) and Mary Anne nee SQUIRES (about 31) from England, with three children; John born 1848 in England, Charles born 1855 in Ohio, and Elizabeth Ann born 1 Jun 1860 in Greenwood Co KS. In looking through the 1860 census on Ancestry.com, I have not found any Ashpole's in Greenwood County. I checked for any families from England and only found one, a W. SQUIRES family in Eureca Twp that was from England. This could be a brother or other relative of Mary Anne. I have no confirmation at this time. The ASHPOLE family was still in Greenwood Co in March of 1864, as this is where Mary Anne (SQUIRES) ASHPOLE died. About 1864/5, Thomas married Martha Jane ELLISON and they with Thomas' three children moved to Oregon. I would like to find more information in Kansas on Mary Anne (my gg grandmother) and Elizabeth Ann (my great grandmother) ASHPOLE. I would be very pleased to hear from someone. -- Loretta "Loni" Parrett Welsh Boring, Oregon, USA Researching: ASHPOLE, AUSTEN, COLE, EVEREST, MILLS, PARRO(E)TT, SQUIRE(S), SWAN, WALLS, & WICKENDEN from England HAGEY, LIVENGOOD, & SHUCK from Germany & Switzerland I use Archive CD Books in my research. http://archivecdbooks.org __________________________________________________________________ Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. I got overeager in trying to locate the inforamtion about Greenwood County. I have located the webpage for the county (very good). It has answered all my questions. > Could someone on this list who might live in Greenwood County advise me if there is a genealogy library in Greenwood County? If so, in what town? > > Also, what are the hours of the courthouse in the county? What town? I know that some courthouses close at 3, at 4, at 5. Also some courthouses have three day weekend. Would like to have information on this county as I will be going that way in a few weeks. >

Surnames: Baldwin Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Bm.2ADE/68 Message Board Post: “The Eureka Herald” 20 Sep 1889 Baldwin – At the residence of the family in Otter Creek township, Monday, September 16, 1889, of cancer of the throat, Maude, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Baldwin, aged about 12 years. The funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday morning, and were very largely attended. For several months past the parents, relatives and friends of little Maude knew that a fatal malady was preying upon her, and that her death was only a question of time. The saddest of all things, the watching of a dearly beloved child fade away into death, has been the lot of the parents, and they have borne it with Christian strength and fortitude. Peace and freedom from suffering has come to their little daughter, and in this they find their only consolation. She was a sweet little girl, tender and loving, and her death, though for a long time expected, is a sad bereavement, indeed. The sympathy of a large circle of friends is with the family in their affliction.
