    3. Jackie, Thank you for your kind offer to help, I really appreciate it. News of the arrival of a train full of children is sometimes found in the local newspaper. I found an article on this trains arrival in the Logan Republican, 23 July 1903, page 4, col.2. The arrival of this train was probably a few days before this date. This is what I know about my father and the family that sponsored him. His full name was Leo Michael MULLEN, born 27 July 1900 in New York. The person who took him in was Margaret DONNELLY, age 70 years, and a widow. She was often referred to as Margaret MULLEN, which was the surname of her first husband and 4 adult children. James Mullen, Cal Mullen, and Margaret Mullen were all living at home with their mother in the 1900 census. My father said he was about three when he was orphaned, which fits the 23 July 1903 train arrival in Hill City. On the 30 January 1905 Margaret Donnelly passed away. I have not been able to find any probate records for her or guardianship records for him. This makes me think that he was not legally adopted, only using the Mullen surname. I first found my father as a 5 year old in the Norton county 1905 state census living with James MULLEN, no relationship listed. Then in the Norton county 1910 federal census as a 10 year old, living with Cal Mullen, relationship was listed as a servant. In the Norton county 1920 federal census he was 20 years old, living with Margaret MULLEN CONNOR and her family, listed as a servant. Although we were not in close touch with the Mullen family my father thought of them as his family. He joined the Army during W.W.I and then went back to live with them. He kept in touch with them through letters and sent pictures of me when I was born. We visited with them when I was about 8 years old. I think he had a happy childhood and a good life with this family, which is not always the case with the orphan train children. My father passed away 11 July 1964. I have had the Norton County records of the Catholic Church and the courts searched. Nothing has been found. So I am hoping that maybe if he was taken from a train in Hill City, Graham county there might be some kind of record there. There was another boy, about the same age, taken in by the son of Margaret Mullen Donnelly. His name was Willie Mullen and he was taken in by Thomas Mullen. Anything you might find about this orphan train arrival or any of the orphan children that were on this train I would really appreciate having. I will be happy to pay for any copy cost you may have. I am going to New York on May 11 to meet with other descendants of orphan train riders and we will visit the places where these children were sent from. Thank you for your help, Kay Mullen Harris
