    1. [KSGRAHAM] Idea - requesting opinions
    2. Jackie & Zane Smith
    3. Since I'm a real newbie to being a list administrator, I'm trying to come up with more ideas to benefit the list. One suggestion on another list I subscribe to is to set up a web-site at MyFamily.com specifically for the list members. If you're familiar with the MyFamily site, feel free to skip to the following paragraph while I explain what it is. MyFamily is a private web-site accessible only to members through the use of user-names and passwords. Each web-site has up to 75 MB of space and has a standard set-up in the features (main, address book, family history, family tree, recipes, etc) are the same from one web-site to the next. The contents of each web-site are contributed by the members. You can see a sample at http://www.myfamily.com/front_members.asp and click on the "Sample Site" on the navigation bar on the left side of the screen. The thoughts behind suggesting this web-site are 1.) members would be able to post their family trees for other members to see, 2) ability to share photos & other items of interest since attachments can't go through to the list. I would be more than happy to set up the web-site (and be administrator) if there is enough interest and only those people who request it would be added as members. Please post your thoughts & feelings about this on-list. Or post any idea you may have about making our list more beneficial. Thanks! Jackie Wilson Smith

    1. [KSGRAHAM] Thank you
    2. Kay Harris
    3. Jackie, Thank you for your kind offer to help, I really appreciate it. News of the arrival of a train full of children is sometimes found in the local newspaper. I found an article on this trains arrival in the Logan Republican, 23 July 1903, page 4, col.2. The arrival of this train was probably a few days before this date. This is what I know about my father and the family that sponsored him. His full name was Leo Michael MULLEN, born 27 July 1900 in New York. The person who took him in was Margaret DONNELLY, age 70 years, and a widow. She was often referred to as Margaret MULLEN, which was the surname of her first husband and 4 adult children. James Mullen, Cal Mullen, and Margaret Mullen were all living at home with their mother in the 1900 census. My father said he was about three when he was orphaned, which fits the 23 July 1903 train arrival in Hill City. On the 30 January 1905 Margaret Donnelly passed away. I have not been able to find any probate records for her or guardianship records for him. This makes me think that he was not legally adopted, only using the Mullen surname. I first found my father as a 5 year old in the Norton county 1905 state census living with James MULLEN, no relationship listed. Then in the Norton county 1910 federal census as a 10 year old, living with Cal Mullen, relationship was listed as a servant. In the Norton county 1920 federal census he was 20 years old, living with Margaret MULLEN CONNOR and her family, listed as a servant. Although we were not in close touch with the Mullen family my father thought of them as his family. He joined the Army during W.W.I and then went back to live with them. He kept in touch with them through letters and sent pictures of me when I was born. We visited with them when I was about 8 years old. I think he had a happy childhood and a good life with this family, which is not always the case with the orphan train children. My father passed away 11 July 1964. I have had the Norton County records of the Catholic Church and the courts searched. Nothing has been found. So I am hoping that maybe if he was taken from a train in Hill City, Graham county there might be some kind of record there. There was another boy, about the same age, taken in by the son of Margaret Mullen Donnelly. His name was Willie Mullen and he was taken in by Thomas Mullen. Anything you might find about this orphan train arrival or any of the orphan children that were on this train I would really appreciate having. I will be happy to pay for any copy cost you may have. I am going to New York on May 11 to meet with other descendants of orphan train riders and we will visit the places where these children were sent from. Thank you for your help, Kay Mullen Harris

    2. Kay Harris
    3. Hello, About July 23, 1903 an orphan train from New York stopped in Hill City and several children were selected by families in the area and surrounding counties. These children were sent by the Catholic church to be placed in good homes. I have a four of the names of the children who were on that train and went with families to Phillips County. I need the names of the children who went to Norton county. If anyone has any information on the children on this train please contact me. I believe one of them was my father Leo MULLEN, and I need his birth name to find him in the New York records. Any help appreciated. Thank you, Kay

    1. [KSGRAHAM] Cutler History book and KU's Kansas Collection online
    2. Bill & Diana Sowers
    3. Hello Graham County researchers.... I just sent the following message out to the Allen County KS list as they'd been discussing the online version of the 1883 book by Wm Cutler, A HISTORY OF KANSAS located on the University of Kansas' Kansas Collection website. There is a search engine for the material in the Kansas Collection and I thought I'd pass this info onto you all as well... just in case you weren't familiar with it. Bill Sowers - ------------------------------------- Hello Allen County researchers.... One more important thing about the Cutler History of Kansas and other books/articles in KU's Kansas Collection online. There is a search engine for this material. If you'll go to: http://www.ukans.edu/carrie/kancoll/index.html Scroll down a bit from the top and there is a box with a message above it saying "Search KanColl". You can put in a word or series of words for a search. Remember that if you put in one word like "Allen" or "Jones" you're gonna get a heck of a lot of stuff! Try to be more specific. If you use the word, "and", between the words in your search the search engine will look for pages with all those words in it. I tried the following search: allen and county and johnson I brought up 400 pages! hmmmmm.... so I narrowed the search a bit more: allen and county and johnson and iola 35 pages... a bit easier to navigate! Also note that below the search engine box on the above page is an option to do an "advanced search." This should make narrowing things even easier. ONE MORE THING!!! (hope you're not tired of me yet!) The KanColl not only includes the Cutler History of Kansas and many other Kansas books/articles.... it also includes the Cutler History of NEBRASKA. So don't be suprised if you come up with pages from that book too. Hope this is of some help to you all in your research. 3. Hello Graham County researchers.... We have added a new link to the Graham County KSGenWeb page as well as a new biography. The link is on the bits and pieces page at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/graham/bits.html GRAHAM COUNTY "ENEMY ALIEN" LIST (1917-1918) During WWI the government made reports on Americans born in Germanic countries (and even their American born spouses!). The reports for Kansas have been preserved and the Kansas Association of Genealogical Societies has been kind enough to transcribe the info online. Check out other Kansas counties here as well. The Graham County surnames found here are: LICHTSINN, HOLZHOUER, BROCKMAN, SUMMERS, WEBER We've also added a short biography for Oscar BROWN (born 1912) on the Graham County KSGenWeb biography page at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/graham/bio.html Happy hunting Bill Sowers Bill and Diana Sowers - wrs@cjnetworks.com - check out our SCHREMMER-POLLOCK families page at: http://www.cjnetworks.com/~wrs/index.htm Lincoln County Kansas KSGenweb Project page at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/index.html Gove County Kansas KSGenWeb Project page at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/gove/index.html Graham County Kansas KSGenWeb Project page at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/graham/index.html Barton County Kansas ALHN web page at: http://www.geocities.com/irus86/

    3. Hello Graham County researchers..... Besides the genealogical connect boards, part of rootsweb.com, don't forget the Graham County KSGenWeb page, part of the USGenWeb Project, also provides places to submit biographies, obits, stories, and queries for your ancestors. The nice thing about this is that there are many places for you to submit queries and other info on your Graham County families. By the way there is also another site called GenExchange where you can submit queries... I'm not real famliar with it but the Graham County page is located at: http://www.genexchange.com/ks/graham/index.cfm And while I'm on it there's also GenForum.com. 3. Hi list, Just wanted to let you know RootsWeb has announced new postings to the GenConnect Boards can now be posted to the associated mailing lists. I have already enabled this option for our list. Not everyone who visits the GenConnect Boards are subscribed to the mailing lists, so this should help us keep abreast of other searchers. The last time I checked, there is only one query posted to the boards, so I encourage everyone to post queries, biographies, etc. If you haven't posted to the Graham Co. Boards, here are the URL's. 3. Hello Jackie and other Graham County researchers.... We are Diana and Bill Sowers. We're the new coordinators for the Graham County KSGenWeb Project page. We are connected more to the central part of Kansas.... Lincoln, Russell, Barton counties. Diana grew up in Ford County (Dodge City). We took over Graham County because we enjoy working with the KSGenWeb Project. We also have Lincoln County and Gove County. We live in Topeka and are both librarians. This gives us an opportunity to get ahold of material to put up online for all of our counties. In fact just tonight I added another Graham County page. It's the Graham County section of the 1912 book, "Kansas: a Cyclopedia of State History." You can find it up online at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/graham/cyclo.html We hope you enjoy this 1912 look at Graham County. Jackie.... we're set up a page at our Lincoln County site to let people know about the Lincoln County email list. We'd be happy to do the same for the Graham County email list with your approval. If you'd like to see the Lincoln County page it's at: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/lincoln/list.htm We can word it any way you'd like and put any info on you that you'd like put up. Just let us know what you think. We've gotten a lot of people added onto the Lincoln County list through this page. I promise we won't include the yellow background! I think I'm the only person in the world who likes that color. If any of you have any suggestions for the Graham County page please let us know. Also if you'd like to add obits, stories, etc. let us know as well. Thanks for giving us an invitation to respond. 2. Jackie & Zane Smith
    3. Hello Graham Co. Researchers: My name is Jackie Wilson Smith, and I have just recently become the administrator for this mailing list. To be perfectly honest, I'm not researching in Graham County: my ties are a little too recent - my family moved there in 1969 when I was 4. (Yep, I just told you my age!) However, Graham County is near and dear to my heart and will always be my home. It has the prettiest place in the world: the farm where I grew up. Let's get a thread going of introductions and please include the surnames you're researching. Jackie

    3. Roberta--and others with parents or grandparents who went to high school in Hill City. I have a 1925 high school yearbook for Hill City High School. My mother was a junior in high school that year. I also have some of her autograph books and memory books that have autographs and writtings of many of her classmates. If any of you had Hill City relatives who were in high school in the 1920s, I would be glad to check to see if I have anything by or about them. My mother was Lodema Young, daughter of Minor and Ethel Young.
