    1. [KSDOUGLA-L] 1859 KS Territorial census; & a Douglas County geography question
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Moore Mohr Savage Lacey Hogue Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Zl.2ADI/103 Message Board Post: The article in the Feb 21 1872 Lawence paper says my kin, who died in a shooting, "was a farmer residing on the island in the Kansas River five miles above this city." A search on-line through Ancestry shows me that he (Mahlon/Malon Moore/Mohr) was listed in the on-line index for the 1859 KS Territorial census. I went to the National Archives and looked in the 1855 census index, the 1860 US census and the 1870 census with no luck finding him. Looking for any sign he was married and if he had kids. Anyone know where that 1859 census will be viewable? Got an address and a phone # for that library? Tht location, "on an island in the KS River 5 miles above (Lawrence)" Where would that be?? Wakarusa Twp? Over the county line? Lecompton Twp.? Grant Twp.? Inside Lawrence City? I can't figure out why, if he was there in 1859, and died 1872, why I can't find him in the 1860 or 1870 census, unless he was living in a Moore relative's family and the census listing was in someone else's name, but I went paage by page through the 1860 and 1870 census' and found nothing. I see there is a thread of Lawrence reaaching north from the city. Is that thread running along the KS River? Maybe he was there. What district, or ward, of Lawrence would that be in? Jerry D. 3. Not sure what you are wanting to find in the 1859 Kansas Territorial census. It is not like the later census records. It is a listing of head of household or "voters" only, so no spouses or other members of the family are shown. It does indicate when the person came to Kansas. I have an alphabetized copy of the Jefferson Co. 1959 census and it does not contain your Mahlon Moore. The complete 1859 census is available at the Kansas State Historical Soc. at 6425 SW 6th, Topeka, KS. phone (785) 272-8681, if you want to pursue that aspect. There was also a newspaper entry in the Lawrence Republican of 5 Jan. 1860 indicating the marriage of Mahlon K. Moore to Lizzie Learned on 1 Jan. 1860., performed by Rev. H. H. Moore. This would indicate that he was married. The 1865 Kansas Census might be another option to check for children. As for the location of the island in the Kansas River----. What is now Grant Township in Douglas Co., was part of Jefferson Co. until 1865. The boundary between the two counties was the centerline of the river. I have several old maps of the area and there is little detail of any islands as most are really only sand-bars. So the island could have been in Jefferson Co. or Wakarusa Twp. of Douglas Co. Townships in Jefferson Co. were changing during this period of time. In Jan. 1856, that part of the river was bounded by Slough Creek Twp. By May 1856, it was changed to be part of Kentucky Twp. In 1862, it became part of Sarcoxie Twp. Grant Twp. was created in 1865, separated from Sarcoxie Twp. and became part of Douglas Co. However, 5 miles upstream from Lawrence would probably put it adjacent to what became Rural Twp. in 1871. So if you are searching in Jefferson Co., you need to be sure you are looking in the correct twp. for the date you are searching. Hope this is not too confusing and can be of help in your search.
