Our old time friend W.E. SMITH has received the appointment of superintendent of the census for the Second District of Kansas. The pay is good but the job does not last long. However his Douglass county friends will rejoice that he has been permitted to enjoy the honor at this time and next year will enjoy the emoluments of office. "Billy" SMITH was born and raised at Lecompton. He published the newspaper there when a youngster and was the "boy mayor" for one term. He was postmaster under Mr. Cleveland's first administration. A short time thereafter he purchased a job office in Lawrence and did a good business, having the Fraternal Aid work for a year or two. He went from here to Garnett and conducted a newspaper for some time, and for the last several years he has been in charge of the Fort Scott Daily Republican. His success in advancing the interests of the g.o.p in that neck o' the woods gave him the prestige that secured his appointment as superintendent of the census for this district. The Democrat extends congratulations. --Lawrence Democrat.
