The marriage record says she was "of Hays City, KS." Her mother Sarah, 39, and siblings Charles, Frank, William, Mary, and Lizzie, all b. OH, are on the 1880 census in Hays City but Annie is not. In Lawrence, Douglas Co. on the 1880 there is a George COOK, 53, widower with daughter Anna, 16, b. OH. I suspect this is my Annie but if so, why is her father listed as widowed when her mother is still living? And why are they in Lawrence without the rest of the family? I can think of a number of explanations, including that some of the census info is incorrect, but they are just guesses. Annie's mother's marital status is not given on the actual census image. Can anyone help identify Annie's father?
Vanette, Annie Cook is an interesting puzzle that I've been meaning to give some time to. I've seen this marriage to McGonigal, but there is an earlier marriage license (no marriage) of an Annie Cook of Lawrence and I've wondered if they were the same. My interest in Annie Cook is because I have a photo labeled Annie Cook, taken in Lawrence, in the album that belonged to my great-grandmother and her mother. They lived near LeLoup, and Ottawa (both Franklin County) and near Wellsville (Johnson County) on farms, so I don't know how they might have known Annie Cook, but they seem to have known her well enough to have kept her photo. I had surmised that the Cook family lived in southern Douglas county and they might have known each other through church or socially, since that would put them geographically closer. Let me hunt out that earlier marriage and I'll post that back to you. I can also share the photo, but not via the list, since the list doesn't allow attachments. Glad you posted this question! Well, it took me a while because one thing lead to the next. The earlier marriage license (no marriage) was for Annie COOK, age 40, of Douglas County to James M. HENDRY, age 22 of Douglas County, dated August 17, 1880, and signed by James M. HENDRY, Probate Judge. That certainly left me wondering. James M. Hendry officiated at many weddings and his name appears over and over again on marriage records of that period. 22 seemed a little young for Probate Judge, too. I decided to see what I could find out about James M. Hendry. He was born 1825 in Tennessee. Came to Kansas in 1857. Became Probate Judge in 1862 and held the position 10 years, and then was elected again in 1878. He married Rebecca F. Whittemore in 1849 in Ohio. They had 2 daughters, one died in infancy. They brought up 5 other children who were orphans or from family and friends. Was very well respected. He died age 69 in 1895. At his death he left a wife and daughter, the latter made her home with her father. That doesn't help at all does it! I had thought the ages might be transposed, or that this might be his son. And he would surely know he could not officiate at his own wedding (and that he was already married). A joke? A mistake? It's very odd and I don't understand, tho there certainly could be many possiblities. So, the earlier marriage record seems to be no help at all. Sorry. I'll keep Annie Cook in mind as I do further research. And will forward the photo I have with her name on it directly to your email. Perhaps you'll know if it's really her.
