The Topeka Daily Capital Wednesday November 20, 1957 Samuel Elliott Dies at Lawrence. Lawrence. Samuel E. ELLIOTT, 87, friends of thousands of students at the University of Kansas, died in the hospital here Tuesday. He retired as a mail carrier in 1935 after 46 years in the postal service, much of that time at the K.U. Post Office. In 1942 he joined the K.U. custodial staff. Five of six children attended the university and a daughter, Miss Maude Elliott, is an assistant professor of Spanish on the faculty. His father, Robert Elliott, introduced the bill in the state legislature in 1863 which made Lawrence the site of the state university.
