I wish there had been a small sign at the gate stating that the tall grass growing in the cemetery was prairie grass. If I had known what it was, I would have gotten out of the car and walked in to see it closer. I have heard and read of prairie grass but didn't have a clue as to what it was! You might pass this suggestion on to the powers that be. I'm pleased to know that it has not been abandoned! I'm going to post the note about "Dobbins" on the Dobbins list. That person you mentioned is not of my line - Dobbinses who came into Douglas County in 1856 from Fulton County, IL. Elizabeth Dobbins' son, James Sellers Dobbins, served in the 11th Kansas Cavalry out of Lawrence.

The Pioneer cemetery is managed by the same board as the OakWood Cem. in Baldwin. The Pioneer cemetery grounds are of "native prairie grass" so there are two sides to the maintenance effort. One group wants to maintain the prairie grass in the best condition for sustaining it--which means it can't be mowed, until late in the year. The other group would like to keep it mowed short like other cemeteries. It has all been mowed this fall and I've personally done the trimming around the stones, so it is in good condition for the winter, for a cemetery not having any burials for over 80 years. There is also a burial in Pioneer Cem. for the Dobbins surname. It is S. B. Dobbins, Co. I of 4th Wis. Cav. Do you have any records regarding this person?

It is the Prairie City Cemetery and has been there for a long time. My g-g-grandma Elizabeth Dobbins is buried there... she died in 1856, and the tombstone is still standing. It is a lovely cemetery - very well maintained. There are some houses nearby - and whoever is tending it is doing a very good job. The Baldwin Cemetery is in a terribly sad state -- all grown over and in disrepair. Makes me think that it must be someone in the houses near the Prairie City cemetery who are tending it. Prairie City is long gone. I was there a year ago and checked out both cemeteries.

I have list of most burials in the cemetery. There have been no burials since 1920. Let me know for whom you are searching. I've been there many times and have no evidence of it being haunted, any more than a person's imagination would do in any cemetery, if you let your mind wander.

I am seeking information on my great great grandfather. Any information could provide would be greatly appreciated. Here is what I have so far... Mathew Emery Osborn was born 2 Apr 1829 in Guilford County, NC. In March of 1867, he moved to Douglas County, KS. Both of these events are recorded in Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy Volume I (North Carolina) as he was a Quaker. He was married three times: wife 1: Nancy Emaline White (b. 8/30/1844 in NC, d. 2/7/1875 in KS) -- don't know marriage date or if any children were born wife 2: Mary Harkness (b. 2/24/1811, m. 7/14/1875 in KS, d. 6/17/1877 in Anderson County, KS) -- don't know if any children were born wife 3: Jarusha Morgan (b. ~1846, m. 1878, d. 1890 in KS) Matthew Emery & Jarusha Morgan had five children: (1) Sue May (b. 1880, d. 1899) -- this birth was recorded in the Quaker records in Guilford County, NC (2) Sarah Gay (b. 1882, d. 1882) -- this birth & death were recorded in the Quaker records in Guilford County, NC (3) George Matthew (b. 1885 near Bush City, KS) -- my great grandfather (4) Lee E (b. 1887, d. 1891) -- this birth was recorded in the Quaker records in Guilford County, NC (5) Sammie Fay (b. 1889 near Bush City, KS) Matthew Emery died 8 Jul 1905 in Walnut, KS. I can't seem to locate any records of Matthew Emery in Kansas or anything about his first two wives. It seems odd that his two oldest children would be recorded in the Quaker records in NC, if they were born in KS -- is this something Quakers do? Thanks in advance for your help! Laura Adrian
