Hi all, I'm wondering if such records for Douglas County are available? I recently saw some for Chicago,1892, and they gave info as to when the voter became naturalized . My husband's ancestor, Thomas LAVELLE, lived in Lawrence from the 1870's till his death in 1897, he was born in Ireland, served about 4 years in the Civil War from Illinois, but we are not sure when he came to the USA. Thank you, Betsy ( for husband, Dave Lavelle, dalav4@aol.com)

A search on-line through Ancestry shows me that he (Mahlon/Malon Moore/Mohr) was listed in the on-line index for the 1859 KS Territorial census. I went to the National Archives and looked in the 1855 census index, the 1860 US census and the 1870 census with no luck finding him. Looking for any sign he was married and if he had kids. Anyone know where that 1859 census will be viewable? Got an address and a phone # for that library? Tht location, "on an island in the KS River 5 miles above (Lawrence)" Where would that be?? Wakarusa Twp? Over the county line? Lecompton Twp.? Grant Twp.? Inside Lawrence City? I can't figure out why, if he was there in 1859, and died 1872, why I can't find him in the 1860 or 1870 census, unless he was living in a Moore relative's family and the census listing was in someone else's name, but I went paage by page through the 1860 and 1870 census' and found nothing. I see there is a thread of Lawrence reaaching north from the city. Is that thread running along the KS River? Maybe he was there. What district, or ward, of Lawrence would that be in? Jerry D. Many thanks to Judy for giving me directions to the Eastview Cemetery, Big Springs, Douglas County, Kansas. It's a pretty small cemetery so I made notes of the surnames as I walked around and took pictures. This isn't a comprehensive list as some of the older marble stones were too difficult to read but this will give you an idea of the surnames to be found here: Anderson Bahnmaier Baihter (?) Susie, You should find Ethel there as I have her listed there in my cemetery book, Ethel Thompson Heinen 1892-1977. I am not sure if the book is actually written in context of where people are found but in case it is she is by some Thompsons and Henrys on one side and Scott, Warner and Bell on the other. Good Luck Judy and Gus-aka- Foxhollow's Gentleman Gaston- CD, OA, AXJ, NAC, NGC, NJC, P1, CGC http://www.geocities.com/funnfur/Gus_the_TFT.html
Hi Judy: I kept having Bonner Springs in my head for the longest time - all the "Springs" start to run together! (Blue Springs, Baxter Springs, Bonner Springs, Big Springs...) But it's definitely Big Springs and the name is Ethel (Hastings) Heinen who died March 1977. There is a road right next to the Methodist Church that runs north so I'm going to try heading up that road for 1 1/2 miles and see if I can spot the Eastview Cemetery. Thanks so much! - Susie _____________________________________________________ S u s a n H a s t i n g s **** Surnames: H A S T I N G S ~ W E L L S praeda@aol.com Midwest USA > Subj:Re: [KSDOUGLA-L] Big Springs Cemetery, Douglas County > Date:6/23/2002 10:54:04 AM Central Daylight Time > From:Jkaymace@aol.com > Reply-to:KSDOUGLA-L@rootsweb.com > To:KSDOUGLA-L@rootsweb.com > > In the book I have it also mentions Eastview Cemetery, Blue Springs, > Lecompton Twp. Hi List: In an obituary, it says my relative was buried in Big Springs Cemetery, Douglas county. Can anyone tell me directions? I know there is a St. Peters Cemetery there on the west end of town. Is that the only cemetery in Big Springs? Apparently a Lawrence area company is testing a new cleaning agent for historical landmarks and gravestones. <http://www.ljworld.com/section/citynews/storypr/96060> _____________________________________________________ Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis. -J a c k H a n d y S u s a n H a s t i n g s praeda@aol.com
