    3. Obit from Lawrence Journal-World of March 15 2002. Ernest Nelson Freeman Military graveside services for Ernest Nelson Freeman, 77, Lawrence will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Freeman died Tuesday March 12, 2002, at Baldwin Care Center. He was a long time Lawrence resident. He was born July 13, 1924, in Eudora, the son of Nelson and Elsie Lenora (Mathia) Freeman. Mr. Freeman was an electrician at Hercules (Sunflower Ammunition Plant) for 25 years. He retired in 1986. He had served in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a lifetime member of Alford-Clarke Post No. 852 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lawrence, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers No. 226. He married Irene Marie Kaufman on March 14, 1947, in Lawrence. She survives of Lawrence. Other survivors include a daughter, Kathy Jorgensen, Lawrence; a brother, Bernard, Lawrence; and two grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. The family suggests memorials to World War II Veterans Memorial, sent in care of the mortuary.

    3. Found two items in the Lawrence newspaper, though neither were under obituaries. Had about given up hope of finding anything, particularly the amount of time after death for it to be in the paper. Richard -------------------------------------- From Lawrence Journal-World of Feb. 15, 1924, page 1-A (2nd section) under Baldwin News The funeral services of Mrs. Fred Johanning will be held on Friday at the German Lutheran church near Worden, after which interment will be made in the Lutheran cemetery. From Lawrence Journal-World of Sat. Feb. 23, 1924, page 6, col. 4. under "Worden News" Mrs. C. F. Johanning passed away Wednesday evening about four-thirty after an illness of four months at her home. Everything that loving hands could do for her was done. All of their children were at her bedside but two daughters, Willie Reed and wife, and daughter Marguerite of Argentine, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Jake Blair and daughter of Topeka, Louie Reed of Nebraska, Henry Johanning and Katie Konake of Paola, Mr. and Mrs. Schlagle of Eudora, Mr. and Mrs. Damm and daughter, Katie of Stull and other relatives and friends.

Her husband and children survive; three sons, Lyle, Lester and Harold KING, all of Lawrence; five daughters, Mrs. Irvin HUTCHINSON, Miss Helen and Miss Betty of Lawrence, Mrs. Gerald FETZER of Fairfield, Iowa, and Mrs. Charles KETCHUM, Topeka; also by three sisters,Naomi (Mrs. William) BLY, Rogers, Ark., Charmion (Mrs. C.D.) HINES, Washington, D.C., and Della (Mrs. J.A. WEAVER), Empire, Calilf. There are five grandchildren.

Her death certificate clearly stated that she was buried in Worden cemetery....not that death certificates are infallable. :-) I really appreciate your checking the microfilm for me. The Baldwin library has a partial index of obits and it did not have any entry for Adeline Johanning either. Also checked index for husband's obit and there is nothing recorded for him either. Does anyone know of an obituary for him, or any source of information that might tell his parents' names, the city or county from which he migrated to Lawrence, his birthplace, where he studied law, anything that would help connect him to his ancestors? He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kathryn BAILEY of the home; a son, Alan BAILEY of LaJolla; two daughters, MRs. Truman HARDING, 826 La. St., and Mrs. Bob KLOPFENSTEIN, 2006 Tenn. St., and three grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. KLOPFENSTEIN and chldren were visiting at the Bailey home at the time of the death. The HARDING family attended the services at LaJolla Monday afternoon. Burial was in San Diego.
