In response to your query about Smith & Armstrong-- Since I do not have early Lawrence city directorys at home, I thought I might check the death records. Unfortunately, they are not alphabetized by individual--only cross referenced by surname. With the name of Smith, it appears on almost every page. I did check for Armstrong and came across something that I thought might be connected. You had indicated the census listed the son of Nellie as S. O. Armstrong b. about 1905. I found the following: Leland O. Armstrong, b. 25 Nov. 1904, d. 9 Jan. 1980, buried Oakhill cem., section 6, Lawrence, KS, with wife Eleanor T. Armstrong, b. 29 May 1905, d. ? With a script "S" that would look very similar to an "L", I thought it might be the same person. There are city directories in the public library in Lawrence. I'm not sure what info. you are seeking regarding the Smith family on the Directories. Richard Wellman --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hello Marlaina, In response to your request for info. about marriage of Richard E. Fritz to Margot (Margaret (?Baker) about 1955 in Douglas Co., I checked the marriage index book covering the period April 1949 to June 1969. I could not find any record of marriage of anyone with "Fritz" surname. Assuming that that time period covered any error in date, I'd belive they were not married in Douglas Co. I also have access to Jefferson Co. (adjacent to the north) and there is no such marriage there either. Kansas has a state wide registration of births (starting July 1911)and marriages (starting May 1913) that could be searched. They will search a 5 year period and make a copy of the record for a fee of $12. They have a web site if you want more info. Write me directly for details. Regarding your request for marriage record for Edward and Margaret Johanning-- I don't have marriage records at home for the 1910 time period. However, I have checked the death records and think I may have found them-- Edward J. Johanning, 1885 - 1978 Margaret E. Johanning, 1889 - 1978 They are buried at Willow Springs St. John's United Church of Christ cemetery, along with many other persons with Johanning surname. There are no burials recorded in Lawrence with the Johanning surname. The marriage record books for the period around 1910 are available at the Spencer Research Library at University of Kansas. It is not easily accessible as the nearest parking (a parking garage with cost of $1 per hour) is about 1/2 mile away and one must then walk the half mile to the library. Finding an obituary that might contain the marriage date may be easier if we could just determine the date (or at least month) of death. Checking the Social Security Death index, I find: Edward Johanning, b. 10 Nov. 1881, d. Jan. 1978, last residence was Topeka, KS Margaret Johanning, b. 24 Sep. 1889, d. Oct. 1978, last residence was Baldwin, KS. Everything agrees except the birth year for Edward--??? I can check for obit. if you want me to pursue that approach. Richard Wellman

Hello, I'm happy to announce a new Special Project, the Kansas Family Group Sheet (FGS) project. It's my privilege to be managing it, and I hope to be very busy adding family group sheets submitted by all of you. The URL for the page is http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/kansas/ . I think you'll find the page easy to read and use, but if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. The USFGS home page (http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/) links to all the states. I hope you'll take advantage of this new project. Those of us who have been working to bring it to Kansas are very excited about its possibilities. Any family group that lived in Kansas, even for a short time, can be posted. THE ONLY PERSONS WHO CANNOT BE POSTED ARE THOSE WHO ARE LIVING. Each family group sheet provides space for basic information about father, mother, and children; so if you only know about one family unit, you know enough to put the information up. If you know more, you can add more family group sheets: the father's parents and siblings, the mother's parents and siblings, the children's spouses and children, and on and on. If you've traced the family into other states, you can post your group sheet in those states as well as Kansas. But just one family sheet in one state can be enough to make new and exciting connections. We've prepared the pages and forms, added search engines and links, and now it's in your hands. Send in your family group sheets. One a day, one a week, whatever works for you. Tell your fellow researchers about the site. Talk about it at your next genealogical society meeting. Mention it in your emails. The more people hear about the site, the more contributions we're likely to get; and the more contributions we receive, the more valuable the project is going to be. I'll be waiting for your family to turn up in my mailbox! Charles Barnum, KS FGS manager I started my genealogy research in Kansas about 40 years ago.

I've "rescued" a group of family letters all written to Henry M. RUDESILL in Lawrence, Kansas or Oberlin, Ohio by his Mother and Aunt in Hutchinson, Kansas. The letters all appear to have been written in the 1890's. Here are some of the clues found in the letters: -Henry appears to have been a student at the time the letters were written -Henry plays piano -Henry is at school with Jake and travels home with Jake on occasion -Henry also writes letters to John, Netta, and Aunt -Henry rents a room in Oberlin, OH from Mrs. KENNEDY -Helen D. visited Henry in Oberlin, OH -Helen travels from Wadsworth to Sharon -Fred picked up Helen when she arrived in Wadsworth -Helen will go to Winnie's -Helen also lives in Hutchinson, KS -Helen will bring Roy home with her when she returns on her trip -Helen was also visiting in Bradford -Henry's Father has sent Helen money (leads me to believe that this Helen is Henry's sister) -Helen is single -Henry's parents live across from the BALLARD family in Hutchinson, KS -Aunt Frank spends time at the Christian Science Home on North Main -Henry's parents own a store, may be at 221 Fifth East -Aunt Hettie might secure students for Henry in the NW (believe he would teach music) -Aunt Frank went to the Remeny's Concert with Arthur SEVERANCE -Cousin John is ill -Henry's Father travels to Rock Island on business -Don't believe that Kansas in Henry's Mother's home as she speaks often of being homesick Other misc. info in the letters includes: -Mr. & Mrs. SPRINGER are living at Dodge City and own land in Reno County, their son Ed lives in Hutchinson -Henry's parents rent a home from Mr. BEREY in Hutchinson, KS -Henry's Mother plans to inherit furniture belonging to Mrs. Dr. MCDANIELS -Mrs. Fanny NORTH BENNETT calls on Henry's Mother in Hutchinson, KS -Ollie HERYER is visiting in Lyons -Mrs. WALL and Mrs. BRIGGS started on Monday (music lessons maybe) -Ethel D. arrived in Santa B, very brave to go all that way on her own (could it be Santa Barbara, California) -Much take about musicale at Mrs. DUVAL's home with many single women in attendance including; Minnie & Sadie EASTMAN; Adeline DUPLER; Dora DUVAL; Stella SMITH; and Miss WHITE (Henry's cousin) -Two SHEARS families are returning to Hutchinson, KS, causing Mr. JONES to move, likely into the old DODDS place just below the SEVERANCE place -Frank MYKRANTZ is coming to Ashland, OH -Miss Nina LEONARD visits with Miss SPAULDING often -Gilmore's Band is playing in Hutchinson, KS -The dog follows Bert SEVERANCE's boys to the store all the time I'm hoping that there is a connection somewhere in all of these clues. I'm hoping to locate someone from the family so that these precious letters from Mother to son and from Aunt to a favorite nephew can be returned to the family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
