    1. [KSDOUGLA-L] Annie COOK b. 1863 OH m. McGONIGAL 1882 -- father????
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: COOK, McGONIGAL Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Zl.2ADI/167 Message Board Post: Annie Leota COOK married Charles Samuel McGONIGAL on Sept. 21, 1882 in Douglas Co. The marriage record says she was "of Hays City, KS." Her mother Sarah, 39, and siblings Charles, Frank, William, Mary, and Lizzie, all b. OH, are on the 1880 census in Hays City but Annie is not. In Lawrence, Douglas Co. on the 1880 there is a George COOK, 53, widower with daughter Anna, 16, b. OH. I suspect this is my Annie but if so, why is her father listed as widowed when her mother is still living? And why are they in Lawrence without the rest of the family? I can think of a number of explanations, including that some of the census info is incorrect, but they are just guesses. Annie's mother's marital status is not given on the actual census image. Can anyone help identify Annie's father?

    1. [KSDOUGLA-L] Book: Preemptions in Douglas County
    2. Hello Listers, Does anyone have access to this book -- Preemptions in Douglas County? The LDS Library lists it in their catalog, call #978.165R2p, but it is not microfilmed, so I assume I cannot order it from them. The original is in Topeka, but there might be a copy of it somewhere in Lawrence. I would like to request a lookup in it. Many thanks. Sharon

    3. In response to your query about Black Jack Kansas and the O'Neill family--- There is a cemetery at Black Jack, but I have found no record of burials of O'neill family there. However, the Dg. Co. Tombstone Census book gives some history of the beginning of the cemetery--- "We, Bryson Black, M. P. Hayes, M. A. O'Neil, J. P. Bell, and A. H. Hayes--Trustees of the First Presbyterian Church of Black Jack in the County of Douglas and State of Kansas have as such trustees, caused a part of the grounds belonging to the above named church to be surveyed into lots, avenues, walks and paths as set forth in this plat, and do heareby dedicate the same as a cemetery to be known as Black Jack cemetery--signed by M. A. O'Neal, M. P. Hayes, J. P. Bell, A. H. Hayes, Bryson Black, Filed for record June 26, 1874." "Old records show that the land occupied by the Black Jack Cemetery was deeded to the trustees of the Black Jack Presbyterian Church and their successors in office, by M. A. O'Neil and his wife Eleanor O'Neal, on February 15, 1869. The trustees were John Eaton, L. Burnett, S. B. Waters. A. E. Hays, H. N. Brockway. This deed was given for a plot of land 59 rods by 12 rods in the NE 1/4 Section 15, [Township not given in book, but would be township # 15], Range 21, adjacent to the old town of Black Jack, and contained between four and five acres. At the sourth end of the land the church was built about 1870, andnorth of that was the cemetery, after some years the north end was sold to private parties, leaving about two and one-half acres of the original plot in the possession of the church." Checking for burials elsewhere--I find: Oakwood cemetery in Baldwin City, KS (about 4 miles away) M. A. O'Neil, d. 27 Dec. 1891, aged 59Y, 6M, 9D Eleanor Rosebaugh O'Neil, d. 25 June 1920, age 87Y, 9M Also in the same lot are the following: Herbert L. O'Neil, 1863 - 1943 Minnie (wife of H. L.) 1864 - 1935 Ralph Vernon O'Neil, 30 Sep. 1892 - 14 May 1954. Kansas P. F.C. Mg. Co. 352 Inf. 88 Div. WWI Iris O'Neil 1900 - 1981 Even though the spelling is different from your query, this would appear to be the O'Neil family of Black Jack. There may be other records and obituary that can be found if you agree that this is the person you are seeking. I have not found any reference to John B. O'Neill, though. 2. Richard & Joy Wellman
    3. There is a Showalter plot in Baldwin's Oakwood cemetery. It also contains the Martin family as follows: Grace Showalter Black, 1875 - 1948 Clarence A. Showalter, 1872 - 1931 Cora May Showalter, 1873 - 1932 Bertha Showalter Gorman, (no dates)] Roxana Showalter McLachlan, 1884 - 1946 Mary E. Showalter, "mother" June 23, 1849 - Mar. 28, 1918 James A. Showalter, "father" July 9, 1850 - Oct. 27, 1902 Mary S. Martin, "mother" 1891 - 1977 Earl F. Martin, "father" 1890 - 1935 It would appear the death date you have would have been for Earl rather than Mary, or the cemetery record is reversed. Since it appears they may have been living in Baldwin area, there may be an obituary in the Baldwin newspaper. It will probably be several days before I have opportunity, but I could check the microfilm of the Baldwin newspaper to see what it has, if anything.
