Message rejected from Sunday morning: The new home for the Douglas county mailing list has been set up. In a few minutes, I'll send out personal invitations to the subscribers of this list who wish to join the new group will be able to do so. I can not add members directly. It should be a link you can click that will let you 'accept' the invitation to join the new group. You may need to check your spam folder as I can't say when such will be delivered. If you don't find an invitation in your email you may also go to this site - https://groups.io/g/KS-DOUGLAS and select Join Group. Of course, folks may still post to this list through 3/1. Good to see the list back on here. My husband's great great grandmother was Elizabeth Hardin Miller. The family had lived in Lane County, Kansas before moving to Douglas County. Elizabeth was married to Augustus Miller and his parents were Lydia and David Miller who are buried in Maple Grove cemetery in North Lawrence Elizabeth Millers daughter Lydia Miller married John Smelser. We have a copy of Lydia Miller Smelser's obituary in May of 1933, and it says that Lydia was born in 1855 in Indiana and that the family came to Kansas in 1859 first settling in in Osawatomie and then they came to Lawrence, where Lydia attended school and had the noted Quantrill as a teacher for one term. Her obituary states that until the last she could give a vivid description of Quantrill's raid and that she remembered her father going to the river to await the attack and her mother huddling the family tougher in their North Lawrence home. One other note is that Lydia's husband John Smelser was a relative of Mary Maude Smelser who for very many years was a librarian at Kansas University. Lydia's mother Elizabeth Miller known to the family as Ma Miller is buried in Oak Hill cemetery and was somehow related the Miller family that for many years had Millers BBQ in North Laurence. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Bess HOLMES SEHON which was taken at the C. F. Lewis Studio in Lawrence, KS in the early 1900's. Bess appears to be in her teens or 20's at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Bess and her family: Bess or Bessie May HOLMES was b. 27 May 1889 or 1892 and married Russel William SEHON (b. 14 Sept 1892 in Lecompton, KS-d. Mar 1964 in Douglas Co., KS - son of Charles W. SEHON and Rosena Margaret "Winnie" HILL). Bess died in 1979 in Douglas Co., KS and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, KS. Census records provide the following details: 1915 census of Lawrence, KS: E. L. HOLMES, age 55 Paul L. HOLMES, age 28 Lily E. HOLMES, age 25 Bessie M. HOLMES, age 23 Russell SEHON, age 24 Agnes MORTON, age 22 1940 census of Wakarusa, KS: Russell W. SEHON, age 49, born KS, a Carpenter Bess SEHON, age 47, born KS, a Flour Mill Clerk I'm hoping to locate someone from her family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned to the care of her family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

I've added more data to the Douglas Co. KHHP page: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ksdoughp/index.html Included at 1867-1868 taxpayer lists for Wakarusa, Eudora, Grant and Kanwaka townships, and North Lawrence, Ward 1. Also, the 1902 city directory for Lecompton. And for those who have relatives who lived in and around Eudora, I have transcribed an old register for Eudora Cemetery. The entries begin in 1870 and end with three burials in 1921. I assume a new ledger was started for later burials. I made two lists, one in the chronological order that the burials were entered, and another alphabetized one, because I feared some of the names were misspelled and would not show up in the search engine. The list can be more easily browsed. Thanks, Sheryl

Correction - I meant found his grandmothers first cousins parents in the 1888 list of First Presbyterian Church not 1873 atlas Nadine --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Antivirus protection is active. http://www.avast.com
Oh thanks so much. Just went through this site and found my husbands great great grandmother buried at Maple Grover Cemetery in Douglas County, in April of 1889. Think also have found the parents of his grandmothers first cousin in the 1873 Atlas of Douglas County. This is a wonderful site and you have done a wonderful job. I've added more data to the Douglas County "Kansas History and Heritage Project" website: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ksdoughp/index.html ~ 1889 burials, Oak Hill and Maple Grove cemeteries, Lawrence. ~ 1878 Farmers' Directory ~ 1889 Post Office and Postmasters ~ "Old Settlers," 1891 I've also replaced the defunct search engine with a working one. A note about the 1878 Farmer's Directory--there are only 416 names on this list, a number far below what I would estimate the farmers in the county in 1878. The names were taken from post office lists, but evidently the person collecting the names did not contact all the post offices in the county, so it is most likely incomplete. Thanks for visiting, Sheryl
Greetings, List. Our family tradition has one Howard Thornton marrying Marian/Marion Seamans and living in Lawrence. Marian is still single in the 1940 census. In 1963, in the Lawrence City Directory, she is the widow of Howard and a clerk at KU. I can't find - A marriage record - A death record I found a Howard C. Thornton, age 29, in Lawrence in the 1940. He's married to a lady named Elizabeth, age 26. They have one son, Gary, age 2. If Elizabeth dies or divorces, he might remarry our Marian. Our family tradition doesn't mention previous marriages, though. If anyone can shed some light on this couple I would appreciate it.
I've "rescued" an old baby book belonging to Sherwood William NEWTON b. 25 Aug 1911 in Topeka, KS. His Mother is listed as Grace NEWTON and brother Dwight NEWTON is also identified in the book. I am looking for information from an obit for Effie L Miller born 25 May 1900 DEATH: Jun 1972 in Lawrence, KS
I have just in the past few days learned that a member of my Kelly/ Kelley family from Indiana moved out to Douglas Co., KS in the late 1840s or early 1850s and I would like to find out if anyone on the list has any information about them. John Kelly was born in 1801 in KY and came to Indiana with his parents, Anthony and Mary Kelly circa 1816 and settled in Clark Co., IN and in the late 1830 the family moved north to Johnson Co., IN. In 1824 in Clark Co., IN I believe that he married Eleanor Patterson, who I think was the daughter of Robert Patterson and possibly his wife Jane Henderson. I believe that she was born in KY circa 1803 or 1804. Since his cousin, another John Kelly was born only a couple of years later, probably in KY, and also lived in Clark Co., IN it is difficult to determine which of them married Eleanor Patterson but I think it is the one born in 1801 since the date of birth on his tombstone matches exactly the date I have and two of his sons were named Anthony and Robert which would have been the names of their grandfathers. In either case as first cousins they are connected to the same Kelly/Kelley family which I have traced back to the 1760s in Augusta Co., VA. Looking at census data for John and Elenor/Ellen Kelly it appears that their children included sons: James (born circa 1830), Anthony (born circa 1833), Robert (born circa 1837), John and James (?) (born circa 1838), and William H (born circa 1841) and at least two daughters: Sarah Ellen (born 1838) who married Abram Smith in 1860 and Eliza (born 1844) who married Graydon McCune in 1865. If anyone has any information about this family I would appreciate hearing from them and I will be glad to share what information I have. Thanks for any assistance. Mary F Kelley (Researching the Kelly/Kelley and Related Families in VA, NC, TN, KY, OH, IN and IA)
