Paul Welch’s two daughters and their families were living in Prairie Dog Township, Decatur County in 1900. Both girls married in 1873 in DeWitt Co., Illinois. Diana Welch married John Jackson. Nancy Elizabeth married George M Bigger. I would like information about the Bigger, Welch and Jackson families. The Bigger family came after 1894 and went back in Geuda Springs, Kansas by 1904. Hello, I'm interested in learning more about the pre-Kansas history of Robert Lipsky, who moved to Smith and then Norcatur, Kansas, in the early 1900's and raised a family there. He came to the U.S. under a different name--Robert Gerstenberger--somewhere between 1878 and 1885. But I can't find much information on him between 1885 and 1900, when he shows up in Smith. He played classical piano for hours and talked of being in the Vienna Boys Choir and taking piano lessons from Brahms. Does anyone have further stories? I came across a book published by the Decatur County (Kansas) Historical Book Committee in 1983. There is a reference to "Smith, E. & G.", written by Everett and George Smith who are children of Jacob and Elizabeth. "Jacob (Jake) Smith came to Decatur County in 1879 from Iowas City, Iowa. He married Elizabeth Karnes on December 25, 1881. Elizabeth Karnes came with her parents Enos and Luhanna Karnes, along with other brothers and sisters sometime previous to 1880. I try not to duplicate information that has already been transcribed on other websites, and I always check projects such as Kansas Genealogy Trails and Kansas USGenWeb to make sure that the data I am adding is not already online. I was *very* impressed with the Decatur County USGenWeb site when I visited it-- lots of great information and well presented. I even found a marriage and some land records for some of my own folks on it--and they were only in Decatur County for a couple of years. And the maps--such great resources! Lots of hard work and love has gone into building that site. This website features a search engine, but I strongly urge you to browse the data, as some of the spelling of surnames is questionable. Decatur is the 63nd county in this project--only 42 counties to go! I hope to have all Kansas counties online within the next two years, but until I can gather enough data for a specific county, I will store the files for that county on the state website: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kahhp/index.html This website houses also statewide information (such as maps, military histories, college files, etc.) as well as serving as a repository for data for the "orphan" counties, and links to counties that do have their own sites.
