In Oct. 1904 when Joel P. Hardin arrived in KS, John Shay was probably all ready living in Grant Twp, Crawford Co. In the 1 Mar 1905 Kansas State Census, he and his family lived two doors down from Father Verdan, the priest at St. Aloysius church, and he is listed as a grocer not a farmer.
