It is far fetched but the only records you need have been destroyed. This Joeseph Bazin's birthplace and time is close to the Wettstein's location near Coal Valley where John was born. So I thought it may be a cousin or nephew. Do you want me to send you the information I have? Oh and I spoke with Axe Library, they do not have anything that pertains to miners and the company in which they work for.

The immigrant Henry died in 1950 in Colorado and is buried there. His wife Olufina possibly died in Cherokee Co but I have not found anything on her death, can only guess at her dod: after July 1899 but before the 1900 census when Henry is a widower. The "Fiena" who md. Edward Stumfoll is his daughter. Henry re-md.in 1904. ................................................. Also obituary for a John Wettstein born Feb. 8, 1894 in Coal Valley to Henry and Olphina Bazin Wettstein. Notice Fiena in marriage record must me varient spelling of Olphina or mispelling because the sister of John is listed as Olphina Stumfoll, also lists a brother Joseph as preceeded in death besides Henry and Richard. Another sister Rose Vider who survives him. This would be the next line down - that of John Henry Wettstein who md. Ida Mae Lane. He died in La Jolla, San Diego, Ca. ............................................................. Henry's obituary doesn't list parents but say he was born in Collinsville Ill in 1887. That would be Henry Ralph Wettstein, another child of Heinrich the immigrant and wife Olufina Bazin. ................................................................. Also an obituary for a Joseph Bazin born 1896 in Fleming. (Fleming is town nearest to the Ashley Camp). Doesn't list parents. You have me on that one - I do not have him on my database, but then my Bazin research has not had much to go on except a lot of guess work. I have not been able to do much with them... ........................................................................ Also list Lee Wettstein as being born at Camp 15 south of Chicopee in 1905.Also lists as sister Alafina Stumfoll. That one is Lee Emile born to immigrant Henry and his 2nd wife, Ella Marcelia Wilcox. ................................................. But we have nothing further on him. The crossing date of Heinrich/Henry has been up for question - none of his naturalization papers can be found; what I could determine in my searching is they they were part of the "trash" the courthouse in Illinois disposed of when they decided to clean house. He is on index but that is all. And his date of immigration is up for grabs; males of this name has been found on more than one pax list, with different occupations and oddly, they all are about the age he would have been. The names you found for the mines could be good clues to the make up of Henry's family if one could get more background on them. I found, when I first began this project, Wettsteins (especially Henry Wettstein) is ! a far more common name than I thought it would be, but not all came from Switzerland - many came from Germany. BTW: is the spelling of the coal company Wear or Weir? If I am reading correctly, Ashley Coal Camp aka #15 Central Camp? I recall something in my research about #15 - will have to dig out my data again to review this and see where this new info leads me. Thank you for all the time you are taking - I feel a new clue coming on.

It is near the Wear Coal Company #16 and the Nevius Coal Company #4. It is a little more than 1 mile east of the town Fleming and a bit to the southeast of that mile marker (south and east of the corner of Country Club Rd and 190th Rd.) The Wear Coal Company was a larger company and may have had companies in other states. It's offices were once held in the National Bank Building on 4th and Broadway Pittsburg. I would not rule out Central Coal and Coke Company because it was very large and the camp also bears the name #15 Central Camp. I found no Henry Wettstein in accident records but I found John, Joeseph, Jake and Jacob all working in the Central Coal and Coke Company and all reports on them were made in 1920's and 30's. I looked on the Axe library Special Collections website and found a few miner related articles but nothing specific to names. However they probably have more information but they do not have it all listed. I will call them tomorrow and ask them specific information about Wear Coal Co., Central Coal and Coke Co. and Nevius) Did Henry have other family members that came over? Did he have brothers? In my family I have 3 Gobl brother's who came over from Austria in 1907 then 1911 and the youngest after WWI. All 3 have practically the same naturalization information.
I'm curious now, since I will be in Pittsburg, is the Miner's Memorial formally open yet? I found the website, but it isn't really clear. What are the visiting hours? Thank you for your help! There were many jobs, some were shot blasters, line men, diggers, etc. I do not know all of them. On the 1930 census if they listed their job as coal miner's, the next space usually specifies what job they had. I looked for a Henry Wettstein in article in Morning Sun about the Coal Mining Days and did not find anything. These are articles such as the one about John Christian Ott and they are submitted by family members.

The father, the miner I am working on, was too old to serve in WWI; he was born 1863 (in Switzerland). It would certainly be interesting to know which house he lived in. His marriage license to his 2nd wife only said his residence was Ashley, Kansas which threw me off since I could not find such a place on any map or even in doing an internet search. That is how I began to learn about coal towns..

The site is www.morningsun.net. First I found an article about the miner's memorial submitted by family of the man they are creating a statue of, John Christian Ott. In the article it lists a letter mailed to his daughter House 43, Ashley Camp, 15, Rural Route #2, Pittsburg. It says he lived near Fleming. Fleming was a small mining town west of Pittsburg which does not exist now. I also found a list of coal camps in Crawford Co. and Ashley was on it. There is also an obituary for a Henry R. Wettstein of Pittsburg, age 93. This was printed just this year Feb. of 06. This is probably why it is so familiar. His wife, Dorothy just passed away this summer. This Henry was born in 1912 Colorado to a Henry Sr. and Mary May Wettstein. In Henry Jr.'s sister Helen May Jones' obituary it lists her being born in 1909 Pittsburg to Henry and Mary Ann (May) Wettstein. The Genealogy Society's email is genealogy@pittsburg.lib.ks.us Have you tried to see if he has a WWI registration. They usually list where they work on those (if they registered) I had a great uncle that listed that he worked for Weir Coal Co. and I found that the same company owned coal companies in Oklahoma and I found him in Muskogee, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma in 1930. There is abviously a connection there.
