I've "rescued" an old photograph of George & Mattie GAYER which was taken at the J. R. Bell Studio in Girard, Kansas. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1880's with both appearing to be in their teens at the time. In addition to their names, someone has written "For Grandpa & Grandma" on the back of the photograph as if it was given as a gift to their grandparents leading me to believe they are siblings. Based on limited research I was able to locate the family in the 1880 census of Girard, KS as follows: David A. GAYER, age 57, born IN, a Blacksmith, parents born unknown Eliza J. GAYER, wife, age 30, born IN, Keeping House, parents born PA/IN Ida B. GAYER, dau, age 10, born IN, at School George J. GAYER, son, age 8, born IN, at School Mattie M. GAYER, dau, age 7, born IN, at School Lola GAYER, dau, age 4, born IN I am hoping to locate someone from this GAYER Family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of their family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

Hi Lois, Many many thanks for checking this out for me! I did a Google Earth search for the Girard cemetery and found it. I dont know if any of the other WRIGHT's buried there are mine. They may possibly be from an earlier generation but I have my main line of WRIGHT's pretty much correct...I hope! :-) I dont know where Alfred's two brothers James & John, ended up. I have two possible marriages for James, and a John the correct age who is in the State pen at Joliet, I hope hes not mine! I wonder what he did?! Once again, Many thanks for your help. Is there anything I can do for you in return? Please let me know. Regards, Charmaine. ---------------- Charmaine, I went back to the book of transcriptions of the tombstones of Crawford County and looked for your Alfred Wright with the Wells and Roberts families. This time I found him. Apparently he is buried at the Girard Cemetery, Lot #59. He tombstone is inscribed: Alfred G. died Feb 8 1910 aged 42 y 11 m 13 d Wright There are quite a few Wrights buried at the Girard Cemetery who are probably related to Alfred; however, I didn't find a John or James born in the 1850's. There are also Gemmells who came to Crawford County as part of the Scottish Presbyterians from Randolph County, Illinois. The state of Kansas did not keep death records until 1 Jul 1911. The Crawford County Clerk would probably have some record of the death. The address would be: Crawford County Clerk, P.O. Box 249, Girard, Kansas 66743-0249. The phone number is (620)724-6115, and their website is http://www.crawfordcountykansas.org/countyclerk.htm. The website might give you more information and tell you whether there is a charge. Charmaine, I tried the website I gave you and see that it has been updated to http://www.crawfordcountykansas.com. It gives a toll-free phone number 1-888-504-8683 (I don't know whether this number would also be toll-free in New Zealand). I also noticed there is a place to click if you want to write the clerk an e-mail message. Lois Kay

Hello Lois, Many thanks for your reply and help. I have contact with Ken Cuthbertson whose relatives lived next door to the Andrew family in Crawford on the 1900 census, of which I do have a copy with Alfreds details etc. I dont seem to be able to find him past 1900. Ken has given me some information which says Alfred died Feb 8 1910 aged 42, and is buried in the Girard KS ( which one? there are so many!) with members of the WELLS and ROBERTS family. Would it be possible for you to look up this for me please? (What is the criteria on death certificates in the US now? Cost etc? And how would I access this correctly?) Alfred had two brothers also whom I cant locate positively but perhaps they may be on his death details. Parents: John WRIGHT born April 1819 Warnockland,Fenwick,Ayrshire. Margaret GEMMELL born September 14 1827 Amlaird,Fenwick,Ayrshire died December 22 1874 Sparta,Illinois Children: James A Wright born 1858 Randolph, Illinois(1880 Tilden,Illinois census) John S Wright born 1859 as above(1860 Sparta,Illinois census) Alpherd/Alford/Alfred G Wright born August 4 or 6 1867 possibly Illinois >From information I have found on 1870 Randolph census Alfred and brother James are living with the Andrew family, Alfred stayed with them until the 1900 census in Kansas. My problem is that I dont have credit cards so therefore cant access Ancestry.com and many other pay to view sites. I have been lucky enough to access Ancestrys free web time while it has been available and have gleaned some information from there which has been a wonderful help. I only have this one family line in the USA and it would be good to have this family complete. If there is ANY research I can do in New Zealand in exchange for you, or anyone else willing to research for me I will gladly return the favour. I have 12 years of research in New Zealand and some wonderful resource material available. Many thanks again for your help. John and Arethusa Andrew are listed as members of a group of Scottish Presbyterians who came from the area of Sparta, Randolph County, Illinois and settled near the town of Girard. They and many of their family are buried at the cemetery at Girard. One tombstone indicates the Andrew brothers were born in Ayrshire, Scotland. I checked through my resources for Crawford County (cemetery, birth, and marriage records) for the time period and didn't find any listing for Alfred Wright other than an Alfred Wright who was pastor of the Presbyterian Church at Cherokee, Kansas in 1888 and 1889 and performed several marriages during that period of time. I have not yet been able to check the 1910 census to see whether he is listed as living in Crawford County then. Hope this gives you a few clues that might help.
