Author: Orlena39 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.crawford/958.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you. It's amazing how many actual recorded records, not just obituaries have the wrong information on them. Obituaries often have wrong information in them and they mostly do NOT get corrected and republished anymore. It wasn't unusual for birth certificates to have the wrong date and/or other facts either. People never knew there was a mistake until they needed the certificate and purchased it years later. When I finally got mine, I found mistakes and was told it was to late to correct them. When we got my husbands, it was one of the made later type, we discovered he hadn't been born where he'd been told. So all his/our records including our sons birth certificates have his birthplace wrong. Not only the wrong town, but it was placed in the wrong county. I've found tombstones with birthdates off by 10 years or more. They were actual mistakes, not someone trying to be younger. Tombstones placed later even have incorrect death dates. I still don't understand why the family accepted tombstones with the wrong information, even names spelled wrong. I'm not talking about homemade markers, or people who couldn't read either. Even with proof, there can still be errors. It's really frustrating. Orlena ~~~~~~ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: jennibea Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.crawford/977.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I do not find a Ben Peterson listed in the Tombstone Transcriptions of Crawford County Kansas 1867-1976 by William Culbertson. This does not mean that he did not die there just that there is no headstone listed. Remember the time frame of possible death 1920-1930. This was a very poor time and many people had no finances for headstones plus he was a coal miner and they didn't make large wages. Also if there were no other family members around he might have been just buried in a potter's field. The old Hobson Cemetery [now a part of Highland Cemetery] was were many were buried. However on the down side the records of Hobson Cemetery were burned up in a fire. So if no stone, no record. Death Records after 1913 were sent to the State. This would be an expense to have a death record search but I don't know how important this is to you. They do searches in 10 year increment. 5 years before the date and 5 years after. I you could someway narrow it down further that might help you ! even more. I'm not for sure what the Crawford County Historical Society has for city directorys but you might find a listing between 1920 and 1930 that may indicate he was still in that area. Hope this helps some. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
