    1. [KSCRAWFO] Obituary of Samuel CHANEY, JR [1857IN-1934KS]
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: RobertLJackson29 Surnames: CHANEY, CULLISON, TIMBERMANN, TURNEY Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.crawford/985/mb.ashx Message Board Post: THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, March 1, 1934, Volume LVIII, Number 18, Page 7, Column 2, 'Sam Chaney Dies In Hepler, Kansas' [Transcribed on April 19, 2008 by RLJ from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.] Had the life of the late Samuel CHANEY been a book, the first chapter would have been dated August 13, 1857, in Greene County, Indiana, near Bloomfield. The last chapter, February 19, 1934, was at his home in Hepler, {Crawford County,} Kansas, after a lingering illness of one year. Mr. CHANEY went to Kansas in 1880, knew the life of a pioneer and the pleasure of seeing the prairies turn to roads, fields, pastures and orchards; saw the steady progress of the churches and schools and did his part in this work also; was spared to see his children located in homes of their own. Funeral services conducted in the M. E. church, Hepler, Kansas, Wednesday, February 21, 1934. The crowd gathered to pay the last tribute of respect being so large, the church annex was opened also. Rev. R. T. WHITE, the pastor, read the Twenty-third Psalm, and offered prayer. Rev. R. O. PENICK, of Ft. Scott, gave the sermon, his text being Timothy II, 4th chapter, verse 7, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." Rev. PENICK stressed the Christian character and the patient attitude of the deceased. A quartet sang 'Angel Band,' 'Abide With Me,' 'Hope Built on High,' and 'It Is Well With My Soul.' Friends and old neighbors from Kansas City, Guard, Heattville, Ft. Scott and Farlington attended. The high school attended in a group. The floral offering was unusually large. Interment in the Farlington Cemetery. He leaves to mourn his going: A wife, Mrs. Kate CHANEY; Mrs. Ora TURNEY, of Ft. Scott, Kansas; Mrs. Cora TIMBERMANN, of Ft. Scott, of Fort Scott, Kansas; Orson CHANEY, of Heattville, Kansas; Mrs. Elsie ORD, of Bosworth, Missouri; Raymond CHANEY, of Hepler, Kansas; grandchildren, and one great grandchild; two brothers, A. Lincoln CHANEY, of Coal City, and Charley CHANEY, of Bloomfield. - Link to the Obituary of his mother, Kiziah (FLATER) CHANEY [1829MD-1889IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/4593/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his father, Samuel CHANEY, SR [1825OH-1905IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/2543/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his brother, George CHANEY [1850IN-1940IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/3670/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his brother, Elza Uriah CHANEY [1852IN-1890IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/2994/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his sister, Sarah (CHANEY) HASLER [1853IN-1929IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/5087/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his sister, Nancy (CHANEY) HASLER [1859IN-1902IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/2929/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his brother, Abraham (LINCOLN) CHANEY [1861IN-1935IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/5082/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his brother, Martin CHANEY [1863IN-1923IN]: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.greene/3660/mb.ashx - Link to the Obituary of his brother, Charles C. 1. [KSCRAWFO] Crawford County Research (McCune Cemetery)
    2. Diana, The Crawford County Genealogical Society can be contacted by e-mail at genealogy@pittsburg.lib.ks.us or at 308 N. Walnut, Pittsburg, KS 66762. The Genealogical Society offers several CD's for sale. One of those is Tombstone Transcriptions of All Known Cemeteries in Crawford County, Kansas 1867-1976. The price of this CD is $12 for members of the Genealogical Society and $22 for non-members (Membership is $13 per year). If you have just a few names, post another message to this mailing list or send me an e-mail, and I will look them up for you. Some Crawford County burials can be found online at http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/crawford/cemetery.html or http://www.interment.net/us/ks/crawford.htm. Most older Kansas newspapers can be viewed on microfilm ordered through interlibrary loan from the Kansas State Historical Library and viewed at your local public library. I believe you can get the film numbers from the Kansas State Historical Library's website as well as instructions for having your library order the film Their website is http://www.kshs.org/library. From the website you can determine the dates the McCune Herald and other older newspapers were published. The Girard newspaper would probably have had obits for the McCune area. Since Parsons (in Labette County) would have been the closest larger town, I would also suggest checking out the newspapers there. Over the past years I have ordered many reels of microfilm of the local newspapers and have enjoyed finding mention of my family in the news and society columns. So far I have read the Arcadia papers from 1882 to 1935, and I have learned a lot about my own family and also much about the events of the times and how they were perceived by and affected the residents of Crawford County. Other CD's available from the Crawford County Genealogical Society include Abstract of Crawford County, Kansas Births 1886 to 1905 and Abstract of Crawford County, Kansas Marriages 1867 through 1902. Again, if you have just a few names, I would be glad to look them up for you. The state of Kansas did not keep death records until 1 Jul 1911. The office of the Crawford County Clerk has birth and death indexes listed alphabetically by last name which are available for public use. I am not sure of the dates they cover but into the 1900's. I think the nice staff there would check for you if you wrote to them at: Crawford County Clerk, P.O. Box 249, Girard, KS 66743-0249. The phone number is (620)724-6115 or toll-free at 18-888-504-8683, and their website is http://www.crawfordcountykansas.com. I noticed there is a place to click if you want to write the clerk an e-mail message. Once you have the date of death, you can order a death certificate for someone who died after June 1911 by sending a check for $10 payable to State Registrar of Vital Statistics to: Office of Vital Statistics, 900 S.W. Jacson, Topeka, KS 66612. I believe the e-mail address for the Office of Vital Statistics is info@kdhe.state.ks.us. A good listing of other resources for Crawford County research can be found at http://www.linkpendium.com/genealogy/USA/KS/Crawford/. 3. Dear Crawford County Researchers, Is there a list/index of burials for the McCune Cemetery? If not is there a caretaker that may have that information? Is there a Genealogy Society for Crawford County and where is it located? Is there a "best" newspaper to find obits circa 1900's and earlier for McCune - would it be the McCune Herald - and what libraries hold that paper? What is the best location to research in the Crawford County area? Any help is most appreciated. Thank you, Diana Bryson-Brooks Researching: Amos Long and extended family, Joshua Brooks and extended family, James Monroe Cooper and extended family, James B. Hensley, both age 26 and both of Walnut, Kansas were married 6 Dec 1885 by D. M. Harris, VDM (page 379). They are buried at Girard Cemetery where there apparently is a large granite marker that has Hensley Grubb with headstones that have George 1859-1912, Rosa 1860-1939, and Zilpha Hensley Crane 1887-1958. There are other Grubb family members buried nearby. I also found the marriage of Iva (Ida?) Cartmel, age 18, to Abraham L. Samples, age 24, both of Walnut on 15 Sep 1887 by D.M. Harris, VDM (Crawford County Marriage Records, Book E, page 385) and the marriage of Nettie E. Blain and Dale O. Cartmel (no date given in the index page I found). A son was born on 26 Feb 1890 in Walnut Grove Twp., Neosho Co., KS, to Link Samples, farmer, age 26, born in Ill., and Ira (Ida?) Cartmel, age 21, born in Ill., of Neosho Co., KS (Crawford County Birth Records, Book C-154-11). I would say it was unusual for the birt! h of a baby born in another county to be recorded on Crawford County's records. Hope this helps you some.
