FYI there is also a town named Liberal in Barton County, Missouri just a few miles over the state line from Crawford County, Kansas. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: DorrieSimon Surnames: MOSS, NEVIUS, MILLER, GATES, MCMURTRY Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.crawford/1024/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm hoping someone can help me solve a mystery. A Miller Family History and Joannes Nevius & his descendants (1900) lists that David N. Miller and his half brother Thomas O. Moss both died 24 July 1881 of "the damp" while digging a well in Liberal, WI. For some time now, this story has bothered me of why they would be in Wisconsin. Not only can I not find a Liberal in Wisconsin, but it doesn't fit where they were living in the 1880 censuses. Thomas O. Moss was born 6 Dec 1851 most likely in Bureau Co. IL. He was the son of Catherine (Nevius) and James Moss. He married Catherine Gates 5 April 1876 and they were living in Crawford Co, KS in 1880 and Thomas was a coal miner: 1880 Baker Twp. Crawford Co. KS Moss, Thomas, 29, coal mining, IL, IA, IL Catherine, 22, keeping house, TX, NC, LA Amanda, 4/12 Jan., AR, IL, TX Harron, George, 30, coal mining, TN, TN, TN David N. Miller was born 15 April 1860 in Bureau County, IL the son of Catherine (Nevius) & Christley Miller. Christley Miller died 2 March 1877 in Montgomery Co. KS. In the 1880 census, David N. and his mother Catherine are living with Catherine's brother George Nevius in Sheridan, Linn Co. KS. 1880 Sheridan Twp. Linn Co. KS Nevius, George G., 51, farming, OH, NJ, VA Catherine, 42, wife, keeping house, OH, OH, PA William, 20, son, works on farm, IL, OH, OH Elizabeth A., 17, daughter, IL, OH, OH Frances S., 14, daughter, at school, IA, OH, OH Charles E. 12, son, at school, KS, OH, OH Pearl E. 10, son, at school, KS, OH, OH Millie N., 6, daughter, KS, OH, OH Mary A. 2, daughter, KS, OH, OH Mathews, Demsy C. 19, nephew, works on farm, OH, OH, OH Miller, Catherine, 50, widowed, sister, housekeeper, OH, NJ, VA David M. 19, nephew, works on farm, IL, OH, OH Ida M. 11, niece, at school, IL, OH, OH Mathews, Zacariah M. 74, widowed, father-in-law, OH, MA, MA These families seemed to live in Linn, Montgomery and Labette Co. KS the later part of the 1800s. Catherine (Nevius) Moss Miller McMurtry is buried in Edna, Labette Co. KS. So it makes NO sense what-so-ever that Thomas O. Moss and his half-brother David N. Miller died digging a well in Wisconsin!! If someone could look in Crawford Co. newspapers around 24 July 1881 it may solve the mystery. I would imagine there was more to the story - as maybe the well collapsed or it wasn't a well at all but something to do with a mine? I understand that there was a Nevius Mine in Crawford Co. Any helps or hints would be greatly appreciated! dorrie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I suppose you have already contacted the descendants of the Gilmores and Carmacks (Mrs. John Carmack was Opal M. Gilmore) who were living in Baxter Springs, Kansas in the 1920's and were probably Maxine's family. That would be my only suggestion until the 1940 census is released. Good luck with your search. William "Ralph" Swindell and Maxine Gilmore from Baxter Springs, Kansas were married on March 22, 1926 in Gerard, Kansas. William "Ralph" Swindell and Maxine (Gilmore) Swindell were divorced in March 1930 in Ottawa, Oklahoma and their two living children from their marriage; Harry Edward Swindell, age 3 and Joe Wesley Swindell age 9 months were mentioned in their divorce degree (10,090) in the District Court in Ottawa County, State of Oklahoma. The two children's custody and care awarded to Maxine Swindell until the further order of the court. Any assistance in location where Mrs. Maxine Swindell and the children Harry Edward Swindell and Joe Wesley Swindell may have moved would be a big help. I've my limited access to the 1930 Census without any success. Thanks for the information made available on Bessie (Webster) Swindell's later marriage to Orville Barnes on September 28, 1929. Although of interest, since Bessie was not Harry Edward & Joe Wesley Swindell's mother, I dropped Bessie Swindell from this search. Any additional help will also be appreciated. Thanks again! Author: cabincreek138 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.crawford/1020.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Have you found any of these people on the 1930 census? Just wondering how their names were listed in 1930. Could William Ralph Swindell have gone by just "Ralph?" Are you sure about Maxine Gilmore's name? On the court records of Ottawa County, OK (http://www.odcr.com), a Ralph Swindell married Bessie Webster on 1 Mar 1924. There is no record of their divorce in Ottawa County, but Bessie Swindell then married Orville Barnes on 28 Sep 1929. If Bessie could be the mother, then you may find the boys on the 1930 census under the name of Barnes. Just trying to brainstorm with you a bit. If you don't have ready access to the 1930 census, I'll do a little searching for you at the library this next week. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: EarlSwindell Surnames: GILMORE, SWINDELL Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.crawford/1020/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking for any information on HARRY EDWARD SWINDELL and his younger brother JOE WESLEY SWINDELL. Harry Edward Swindell was born about 1925 and Joe Wesley Swindell was born in 1929 in or around Ottawa, Oklahoma and Joplin, Missouri. William Ralph Swindell (b. about 1897 in Liberty County, GA) and Maxine (Gilmore) Swindell (b. about 1908 in Kansas) are believed to be their parents. The family separated in about 1928-29 while living in Ottawa, County, Oklahoma. William Ralph Swindell was believed to have been worked with or in the Mining Operations in that area. Their mother Mrs. Maxine (Gilmore) Swindell is believed to have remained in or around Miami and/or Picher Oklahoma and their father William Ralph Swindell in Burke, Idaho on May 8, 1929 (?). William Ralph Swindell's whereabouts after 1929 and before 1945 remains unknown. He visited his siblings in Georgia in 1945 and again in 1946-47 at which time he disappeared again. Any help in locating Harry Edward Swindell and/or Joe Wesley Swindell's descendants will be greatly appreciated. William Ralph Swindell (b. about 1897 - GA) is my uncle and we are very much interested in locating any of his descendents. THANKS!
