He had been in the hospital the past six weeks. Joseph Groene was born at West Point, Lee county, IA., May 23, 1864, and was married to Theresa Kessler, April 7, 1891. There were ten children to this union, nine of whom grew to adulthood, and came to Cowley county with their parents in 1915. The family located on a farm nine miles northwest of Winfield, in he Mount Vernon neighborhood. As a young man he engaged in farming in Iowa, and besides his interest in agriculture, he took to raising stock. For years he was active in the farmers union and was affiliated with the Kellogg Farmer's Union. He was a member of Holy Name Catholic church and the Knights of Columbus council at Wellington. His wife, one daughter Adelaide, and the eldest son, Aloysius, preceded him in death. The son died December 23, 1945. Surviving are five sons, J. A. Groene, Joseph Jr., Albert and Casper of Winfield, Julius of Wichita and two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Shehan of Wellington and Miss Elizabeth Groene of the home; 19 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Katherine Wiebler of Fort Madison, IA, and a brother John Groene of Weber, IA Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 AM from the Catholic church, with Rev. Thomas Glynn officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in St. Mary's cemetery. Rosary will be said at the Swisher mortuary, Thursday at 9 PM.
