Vernon cemetery in Cowley county too. It is east and a little south of the town of Atlanta. Your Chas. Ramsey may be interred there. (Just a thought...)

Vernon twp, in Cowley county, Kansas encompasses the west half of the town of Winfield. The main cemetery for Winfield would be in Vernon twp. I might recommend to all serious researchers, the DeLorme series of Atlas/Gazeteer. There is an atlas for almost all the states now, and they are very affordable, at $16.95, (street price) in most Border's Book Stores, and we got our Kansas edition at our local Sam's Club, for $10. You will find virtually every town, township, physical feature, etc., in the DeLorme!

    1. [KSCOWLEY] Newbie with a mystery
    2. LaVelda Faull
    3. Hi. My name is LaVelda Faull and I am new to the list. I have tried many avenues to try and find my grandfather without any luck, so I am hoping that perhaps someone on this list might be able to help. He is a big hole in my family tree. My mother, Frankie Ruth Simmons, was born in 1933 in WINFIELD, COWLEY COUNTY, KANSAS. Her parents were FRANK W. (FRANCIS WILLARD we think) and VELDA MAE (ALISON)SIMMONS. My mother has an older sister who was born in 1932 - Barbara Alison Simmons. When my mother was only two years old, her parents were divorced. I have a copy of my mother's birth certificate and a copy of her parents divorce papers. They were divorced in Hamilton County, Kansas courts, but Frank's whereabouts were unknown at that time. My grandmother always said that he never paid child support. The circumstances of their divorce were (according to my mother) that because of the Great Depression, Frank (who was a stone mason) could not find work to support his family. For some reason, this caused a rift between he and his family and he "deserted them". I don't know if this was really the case, but that is what I have been told. Anyway, my mother never saw him again except for one time when she was ten years old somewhere in Oklahoma while she was visiting an aunt. However, in about 1954, Frank W. Simmons tried to contact my mother's sister, Barbara, who was in college at that time in Missouri. He wanted to meet her. At that time he was living in WINFIELD, COWLEY COUNTY, KANSAS. Barbara refused to see him out of loyalty to her mother and has since regretted that decision. Neither of the two sisters ever saw their father again. My mother says that he had a glass eye. My aunt says that he was in the navy in World War II. It is possible that he remarried and had more children, but we just don't know. Frank had a sister named LAVINA (SIMMONS) BEGGS who tried to find her brother before her death in the 1980's in Michigan City, Indiana. She advertised, etc, but never could find him. Frank also had a brother named LEO SIMMONS who supposedly moved to California to be an entertainer. His nickname was "CHICK SIMMONS". He, also, I have been unable to find. Frank's parents I do know. He was the son of JAMES MARK and MARTHA MERRIAH "Mattie" SMITH) SIMMONS. They both lived and died in Cowley County, Kansas. Frank W. Simmons was born in approximately 1903 or 1901. He was supposedly ten years older than my grandmother who was born in 1913. Do any of these names ring any bells with anyone in Cowley County? Does anyone remember Frank W. Simmons? Are there old Winfield directories that might list him? I sure would appreciate any help that you might give me in trying to find my grandfather. I know that he would be dead by now, but I am anxious to know what happened to him. Best regards, LaVelda Faull Glasgow, KY _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. The Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum in Ark(ansas) City has an exceptional genealogical collection for local events. Maybe someone there could help you, as well as inquiring at the library. I know the Winfield Library has the 1875 census and an index, and last I looked, the catalog was online -- http://www.wpl.org/ . I do not have a current e-address for the Ark City Museum. If you find any evidence of a connection, I will be happy to share Godspeed, Bill Strickland Oregon City, OR

    3. In the 1880 Federal Census (Windsor, Cowley County), my g.grandmother, Martha Gray, was a widow with 8 children ranging from 2 yrs to 19 yrs living in the C.E. Frank household. Also living there was H.C.Gray who I believe was Harry C. Gray, a brother-in-law to Martha. Does anyone have access to an index for the Kansas State Census for 1885 or 1895. I am pretty sure they should still be in Cowley County in 1895 as my Grandmother (Mary Louisa GRAY) & Grandfather (John Franklin RICHARDS) were married in Grand Summit, Cowley County in 1888. I have completely lost the rest of the family. Would the Winfield Library possibly have and index for these State Census. Any help would be appreciated. I began posting queries on adoption sites for my husbands 3 adopted sisters and within months they came across our postings. After 50 years, my husband has reunited with his 3 older adopted sisters (adopted separately too). We had a reunion to include all siblings and the birth parents! WONDERFUL! Don't give up....... 1. [KSCOWLEY] Riverview Cemetery
    2. I was wondering if there is someone living in Arkansas City who could make a phone call for me to Riverview Cemetery? Several of my family members from the 1800's are buried there, one of which is my gggrandpa. I've written to them and asked these questions, but after a month and a half I have still not had a reply from them. My ggrandpa never had a headstone and since he is a veteran of the Civil War, I want to order a tombstone for him. But first I must know their procedure for "receiving" the delivery of the stone and what costs are involved in them installing the stone? On the VA's request application for the stone, the name and signature of the person who will sign for the stone's delivery at the cemetery must be included. So I would need to know that person's name. Secondly, out of curiosity I would like to know at what price they are currently selling plots in their cemetery...or at least a price range, if there is more than one price. Thank you to anyone who can help me with a phone call to answer these questions. Laura Tuttle Miami, FL

    3. Hello List Request is made for someone in or around Cowley County Kansas to possibly check local county records, cemetery records, court records & etc., to determine if a record exists of the people listed below. George W. OGDEN and two sons, John W. born 1894 and Nelson D. C. born 1895 in Fort Smith, Ark.. According to the boy, John W., they arrived in Arkansas City, Ks by horse and wagon between late 1898 and 1905, with possibly his Brother John OGDEN and possibly Milton OGDEN. It is said that George W. OGDEN worked in a Lumber Yard in town, while his two sons stayed by themselves in what was described an old house. Some time during this period the Boys, John W. and Nelson were taken by parties unknown (possibly local authorities or church group) and placed in an orphanage at Topeka, Ks. It is not known whether the Father, George W. OGDEN, was taken ill and died or that he just could no longer care for the children and possibly made arrangements for them to be placed in an orphanage. John W. OGDEN the oldest of the two boys, writes that he did not remember anything about the orphanage in Topeka. Apparently adoption or foster home care arrangements were made with two couples in Wallace County, Kans to either adopt or be foster parents for the boys. Both children were placed on a Train in Topeka KS, with a Mrs. Morrow and delivered to the families in Wallace County Kansas. The paper Trail on John W. OGDEN picks back up in 1910 Census for Wallace County, Ks. Nelson Ogden information has been located starting with a Marriage and Children Born in Miami County, Ks after 1915. We are trying to piece together the time period between late 1890s to sometime possibly 1905. Thank you Virgil D. Miller

According to the article Lois Stockdale Hanahan was still living in the area when this book was published. I would very much like to get in contact with her about the Stockdale line. If anyone on the list is from the Cowley County area, could you please send me an address for her - the phone book might have her listed under her husband's name, Robert Hanahan. The article was submitted by a Grandson, Hanahan Bennett. Thank you very much. Carolyn Dennis Allison from Oklahoma researching Stockdale, Stewart & Bartholomew lines.
