    1. [KSCOWLEY] Fw: Merry Christmas Genealogy Style
    2. Happy Holidays Everyone.... Marla Genealogist's Christmas Eve (Twas the Night Before Christmas) by Unknown 'Twas the night before Christmas When all through the house Not a creature was stirring, Not even my spouse. The dining room table with clutter was spread With pedigree charts and letters which said... "Too bad about the data for which you wrote; Sank in a storm on an ill-fated boat." Stacks of old copies of wills and such Were proof that my work had become too much. Our children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads. And I at my table was ready to drop >From work on my album with photos to crop. Christmas was here, and such was my lot That presents and goodies and toys I'd forgot. Had I not been busy with grandparents' wills, I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills, While others bought gifts to bring Christmas cheers, I'd spent time researching those birth dates and years. While I was thus musing about my sad plight, A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright/Away to the window I flew in a flash, Tore open the drapes and yanked up the sash. When what with my wondering eyes should appear, But an overstuffed sleigh and with eight small reindeer. Up to the house top the reindeer they flew, With a sleigh full of toys and 'lo Santa Claus, too. And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs, As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash, Down the cold chimney fell Santa--KER-RASH! "Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck, And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!) Spotting my face, good 'lo Santa could see I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk.) Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy: When I'd been too busy for even one toy. He spied my research on the table all spread "A genealogist!" He cried! (My face was all red!) "Tonight I've met many like you," Santa grinned, As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned. I gazed with amusement--the cover it read Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead. "I know what it's like as a genealogy bug." He said as he gave me a great Santa hug. "While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry, I do some research in the North Pole Library! A special treat I am thus able to bring, To genealogy folk who can't find a thing." "Now off you go to your bed for a rest, I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess." As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee, I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me. While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle, To his team, which then rose like the down of a thistle. And I heard his exclaim as he flew out of sight, "Family history is Fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!" Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Lois Burdick _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Ted McAlister gave me a copy of a letter dated06 July 1982 from a Mary Elizabeth Phillips, Dallas, Texas. She was working on the Pierce line then...I attempted to locate her several times...thinking about her all these years and furious I had no way to track her down. Now, I am wondering if you are related to her? My husband's grandfather was Homer Pierce, brother to your Lavina , daughter of John and Lavina Pierce. Ted allowed me to copy all the photos he had and I am wondering if these are duplicates of what you have...do you have a way to send photos over the internet? Mary Phillips thot that the Pierce line originated in Isle of Wight County, Virginia...she had census records for a Peter, Benit, and others in that county. According to census records in Marion County, Indiana where the Pierce family migrated to...John was born in West Virginia...tho I have never been able to figure out what county. Remember that West Virginia was not a state until after the Civil War and John born early 1800's...so this would have been called Virginia rather than West Virginia when he was born. Since the census records indicate West Virginia, I figure they were from a county in Virginia that became part of West Virginia eventually...what do you think? I have not been able to get going on the Jones line either...Lavina Jones married John, as you know. Her brother Philip lived in Arkansas City, Kansas as we find her with him when a census taken...probably visiting. John Pierce made the run into Kay County, Oklahoma with his sons and died there. One of John and Lavina's sons, Thadius Madison was sheriff of Kay County and died 1928 Major County. Son James Bufford went to Dallas, Texas, William was schoolteacher and sheriff of Kay County, Oklahoma as well before going to Colorado.I would like your family group sheets...can you send them? My addres is 15613 SE Creswain, Milwaukie, Oregon 97267. I have other information for you so you might want to send your address as well. What can you provide for me...I do hope you have something that might shed some light on this elusive Pierce family...I have Indiana census records, land records, marriage record for John and Lavina. I am not interested in McAlister line other than as an aside... Ted won't write and he laughs when I yell at him about this, but you never know when you will get a card or phone call out of the blue. Click into http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~pierces/history.html...intresting info on Origin of the Pierce Family... Did Ted give you copy of Mary Phillips info he had.... I will await reply...great hearing from you. If you only knew what I have gone thru to contact this Mary Phillips...thot I had her tracked down to San Francisco living with boyfriend years ago, but that lead did not pan out....

    2. Greetings All! I have recently subscribed to the list, and wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Susan Anderson, and I am the County Coordinator for Keith County, Nebraska. My interest in Cowley County is that I believe this is where my g-g-g grandfather died. I don't know his first name, or anything else really. All I have to go on is an old Western Union Telegram dated Udall, May 1887, sent to my g-g grandfather. This telegram, signed Robert Rattiff, Mayor, says that "your father is very sick. Cannot live long unless changes." I am hoping that perhaps someone on the list may be able to help me with more information on my g-g-g grandfather (surname most likely TURNER) or if nothing else, confirm or deny that there was a Mayor Robert Rattiff in Udall in May of 1887. Whereas most of the townships in Cowley County are square at 36 square mile (6 x 6), Dexter is irregular in that it is basically 9 x 9 except for a 9 square mile (3 x 3) corner in the northwest which is part of Sheridan Township. Otter Twp is between Dexter Twp and Chautauqua County. Roughly, Dexter Twp is slightly south of the center of the eastern part of Cowley County. Dexter is about 15 miles east of Winfield, which is in turn about 50 some miles south of Wichita. I don't suppose that this is too far, unless maybe you are on foot and not used to walking 70 miles a day. : ) Bill Strickland Oregon City, OR

It is South and East of Wichita, which is in Sedgwick county. Wichita is the largest city in the state, with the exception of the "Kansas City" complex, in the far NE part of the state. The Winfield/Arkansas City area of Cowley, is pretty good-sized, and about 60 miles away from Wichita. Dexter twp, in Cowley county, is in the far SE part of the county. The only town of any size there, being Dexter. In the time frame you mentioned, there was also a little town nearby, by the name of Hooser (NOT HOOSIER) which had some population. Good luck with your SIMMONS. Gary & Mary Lee Presson Wichita.

    1. [KSCOWLEY] Dexter Twp/Simmons/Constitutional Exemption?
    2. LaVelda Faull
    3. I found mention of my JOHN SIMMONS in the "Cowley County Courant" newspaper dated 5 Jan 1882. Under "County Commissioner's Session", it states "Constitutional exemption was allowed to JOHN SIMMONS OF DEXTER TOWNSHIP and proportionate taxes remitted to him". First of all - what does the phrase "Constitutional exemption" mean in regards to taxes? Is this the same thing that I have found in earlier times where a person who reached a certain age was exempt from taxes? Kind of like a senior citizens discount or exemption??? He was born ca 1823 which would make him either 59 or 60 years of age. Second - where is Dexter Township in Cowley County? Is it on the edge of a county line and if so what county? How close is it to Wichita? I think Wichita is close to Cowley, isn't it? JOHN SIMMONS Jr.'s middle initial (according to the 1870 Madison County, Arkansas census) was "N." I have always suspected that the "N" stood for Nathan, named perhaps after his mother's side of the family where there was a Nathan. On the 1887 Wichita, Kansas, city directory there is: SIMMONS, NATHAN, stone mason, residence: 609 N Water St. He does not appear on the 1891 Wichita City Directory. However, there is a: J. M. SIMMONS, residence: 811 S. Mead and a JNO W. SIMMONS, residence corner 2nd and John. John N. Simmons had sons named: James Mark Simmons and John W. Simmons. What really caught my eye was that this Nathan Simmons was a "stone mason". My grandfather, Frank Simmons, son of James Mark Simmons and grandson of John N. Simmons Jr. was also a stone mason. May be just a coincidence but I thought it was worth following up. Thanks for any help. 3. The following is all that I currently know about my ancestor, JOHN N. SIMMONS JR. who moved with his second wife JEMIMA (STEWART)SIMMONS to Cowley County, Kansas in the 1870's. By 1880, they were residing in Richland Township. Other records indicate that they lived in Dexter. I have a photo of him taken by the M. K. LITTLETON ART GALLERY of Dexter, but there is no date on this photo. I have not been able to find out anything about his or his wife's death or burial, but assume that it was in Cowley County. Does anyone know when the M. K. Littleton Art Gallery of Dexter was in business? I would love to find out more about him and his children. Do any of the names below ring any bells? Best regards, LaVelda Faull --------------------------- JOHN N. SIMMONS JR. John N. Simmons Jr and family lived in Walnut Township, Montgomery County, Indiana where they sold land (which had originally been bought by his father John Simmons Sr. from the heirs of Solomon Beck) on 9 Oct 1843. This 80 acres of land became known as Beckville, Section 12 of Walnut Township. In 1852 he bought land from William Bowman and in 1854 from Larkin Thompson in Franklin Township next to land owned by his second wife's grandfather, Jesse Enlow. In 1854 John Simmons Jr, John and Sarah Bowman Sr. and Robert S. and Nancy Burke sold a parcel of land to James Strain (John's brother-in-law). The Bowmans and Burks were related through John N. Simmons Jr's first wife, Rebecca Loop. On 21 March 1858, John and Jemima (Stewart) Simmons sold the rest of their land in Walnut Township to George W. Farlow, a cousin. At the start of the Civil War, they were living in Franklin Township. He alos owned a lot in Darlington and land that originally had belonged to Henry Beck who married Mary Farlow. In 1862-64, John and Jemima sold their land holdings in Franklin Township to a number of people and moved to Warren County, Indiana. The Simmons resided near State Line City on the Illinois border in Steuben Township. John Simmons Jr. and Robert S. Burk were charter members of the Simmons Lodge No. 240 Odd Fellows instituted May 1865 and named after John Jr. He was the first Noble Grand. This lodge was renamed Illiana in 1868. By 1867, the John N. Simmons Jr. family moved from Warren County, Indiana to Madison County, Arkansas where they are found living in Prairie Township, post office Hindsville, in 1870. It is not known exactly what year they again moved west. This time to COWLEY COUNTY, KANSAS. In 1880 the Simmons family resided in Richmond Township, Cowley County, Kansas. I have a picture of John N. Simmons Jr. with a brother (the back says Willard but he didn't have a brother named Willard that we know of so there is a bit of a mystery there) taken in Dexter, Winfield County, Kansas by the M. K. Littleton's Art Gallery (no date on photo). It is not currently known for sure where or when John N. 3. There is actually 2 Mt Vernon Cemetery's in Cowley County, 1 is 4 miles East of Atlanta 2 south and 1/2 east which was mentioned, then there is another one North and West of Winfield. The one you are probably looking for is the one North West of Winfield, as I have researched all the Mt Vernon in Atlanta and do not see that name listed. Hope this helps.
