Could someone please send me the address of the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Topeka so that I might obtain some birth certificates, and how much they cost now? TO CATHY, Hi Cathy, I am Marla and a list member. I haven't been very active with my genealogy for awhile. Keeping too busy with kids. There are usually quite a few people on this list. It has been a really good one for me. To answer your question about the Genealogical Society, yes it exists. I have hired a gal from there several times who has done private research for me and very reasonably too. Below I will list her name and addy and you may want to consider hiring her to help you in the area. If you decide to contact her, please tell her hi from Marla Andrus from Montana. I wish you the best of luck. Here is her info: Claire Utt, 1518 E. 12th Street, Winfield, KS 67156-3923 (She is the Secy-Treas. for the Cowley County Genealogical Society, and the above addy is for the Society.) The Winfield Public Library is 605 College, Winfield, KS 67156-3199 You also mentioned the surname WHEELER in one of your e-mails. For whatever it is worth, there is a Wheeler Funeral Home in Burden, KS Cowley Co., and the number is 316-438-2233. I hope this will be of some help to you. Best wishes Cathy! Marla
Seeking information on descendants of Ollis McAlister b. ca 1867 and Albert Graham. Photograph taken ca 1890s suggests they lived in in the Sedan area of Chatauqua County at that time, but since they grew up in Cowley Co (Sheridan Twp. 1880 Fed Census) and their families remained in Cowley, it's possible they at some time moved back to Cowley Co. Ollis is the sister of my great-grandfather, Edward McAlister. Thanks. Cynthia Phillips __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I believe his e-address was posted previously in this thread. As I understand it, the editions are basically similar, except for some error corrections and a few misc additions. If you wanted to look back in the list archives or do a search, Bob did post on here a bit more detail about the 2nd edition, the main difference being that it is published in CD format. Since the list is so quiet: Thomas Benton and Mary Ann Kathrens Woodson lived in Cowley county until 1894 when Thomas Benton died. They had 4 children while there. Emma Ester, Robert Thomas, Charles William "Willie", and Ota. Stephen Woodson was living with them, based on his age I assume he was T.B.'s father. ANY information or ideas about where to look would be appreciated. Dayna Shepherd _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The list is still here, although not too active. For the "book" you mention, you might want to contact Bob Lawrence [email protected] As he is the one who has put this together on a CD, I believe. We live in Wichita, which is about 50 miles from Rock. Been thru there numerous times, but not familiar with anyone there. Gary & Mary Lee Presson

I don't think I have seen ANY activity on this list. Is there anyone out there, especially someone still living in the area? I am searching for WHEELER family in Rock, KS beginning about 1888. Found family there thru the 1920 census. Suspect there are STILL family members in the area. I am especially interested in contacting the Cowley Co Genealogical Society regarding a book they published of Cowley Co births and deaths. Does this group still exist and, if so, do they have an email address? Would appreciate any suggestions. Cathy Wood San Diego, California

George Franklin "Gran'pa" Gray was born about Nov 1855 in Washington, DC. He died 29 Sep 1929 in Sheridan Twp, Cowley, KS and was buried in Burden Cemetery, Burden, Cowley, KS. George moved to Burden about 1877. Reportedly, George is the son of Austin and Sarah Elizabeth Gray. George married(1) Regina Hetrick, daughter of Samuel Hetrick and Elizabeth Rhodes, in 1879. Regina died 31 Dec 1886. George also married(2) Emmaline Elizabeth (Green) Casebolt about 1899. Emmaline was born Oct 1871 in WI. She died 18 Sep 1934 in possibly Dexter, Cowley, KS. "George Gray, a pioneer of the Burden community, died at his home one and one-half miles south of Burden at 12:30 Sunday night. Mr. Gray was a stonemason and bricklayer and had lived near Burden for 52 years. [This home was built of stone just before his death. It is currently abandoned but still standing (May 1997) out in the middle of section 3 of Sheridan Twp.] "He leaves to mourn his death his wife, two daughters, Mrs. F. E. Strickland of Eaton and Miss Elizabeth Gray at home, and two sons, George at home, and Austin of Denver, Colo." -- Winfield Daily Courier, Monday, 30 Sep 1929 The sons, George and Austin went on to become quite prominent in the business of painting commercial signage on trucks and trailers, first in Denver, and later in Los Angeles. George Gray also has a connection to the wife of W E Gatton, of Burden. I am not positive of the exact nature of that relationship. Although I would like additional information on George Gray, my primary interest is in his second wife, Mrs. E E Gray, who is my great grandmother by her first marriage to William Casebolt. Any help would be appreciated, especially in locating her obituary. At one time, a Casebolt had property on the NE corner of Valley and Main in Dexter. Thank you, Bill Strickland Oregon City, OR

If anyone can tell me anything about any of these people, or the whereabouts of their families, please contact me: James D. Henderson, born at Dexter in 1889. Fred Mann, lived in Winfield in the early 1950s. James F. Pickens, a car salesman in Arkansas City in the late 1920's and early 1930's. Phillip A. Dautschman, (1886-1936), buried in Highland cemetery at Winfield. Wendell A. Sparling, lived in Winfield from 1927 to 1931. Gerald L. Sparling, born at Winfield in 1929. Glen M. Breed, lived at Winfield for a short period sometime between 1901 and 1911. Gerald Cheek, lived in Winfield in the early 1930s. James E. Cantrell (1913-1934), buried in Highland cemetery at Winfield. And the following men who were all living at Arkansas City in the 1920s and 1930s: Andrew "Cokie" Fuller Russell D. Hill Roy Humes Joe Hutchinson Lewis Irvin Ira McIntire Forrest O'Bannon Roy Rhinehart George Roberts Jimmy Snyder Lonnie Rose A. R. Bobs H. Cowan R. F. Dutton Ted Hill There was an automoble racetrack located " One and a half miles west of Arkansas City on Madison" from 1929 through 1931 and maybe even later than that. It went by two different names: "Arkansas City Speedway" and "West Madison Speedway Park". Does anyone know anything more about his facility including a more accurate location?
