Author: Leslie85223 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.cowley/942.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ellen: What a wonderful idea! I probably would never have thought of contacting the local people who made the grave stones. Although I'm unsure as to whether or not my ancestors were provided with grave markers, one would certainly hope so . . . I've found in some cases where a burial had occurred, the family was unable to afford a permanent headstone. In places that involved extreme weather (most of America at some time of the year) the hand made wooden markers didn't last long . . . I'll keep your suggestion in mind for future use as well. Thank you for your time and sharing the "tip". In gratitude, Leslie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Leslie85223 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.cowley/942.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Don: Thank you for the information. I can only hope that my inquiry will meet with the same degree of success as yours did!!! I got side tracked yesterday but will see to this today. I don't know how to explain it exactly, but I feel such a strong bond with all of my ancestors that, until I began working on my family tree, were mostly unknown or all but forgotten. It's become my "job" to record as much of our family history as possible as it had never been put on paper by anyone in my immediate family before. Thank you so very much for taking the time to assist me in this matter. Blessings. Leslie (AZ) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It's Dawson Monument Company - Tel 620 221-1800. They have records going back years and years and do probably 99% of the stones for Winfield's cemeteries. Is there a source where I can obtain the full obituaries? I tried checking the Winfield Daily Courier but they evidently do not have accomodation to extract the obituaries from their website. I can find no telephone numbers for either Union or Graham cemeteries via Internet yellow or white page directories. How does a person contact them to obtain information as to exact location (lot/block/plot etc) of ancestors buried in these cemeteries. As I stated before they are not included in the lists at FindAGrave.com and although I could add these name, I need more information to do so. Thank you again for taking the time to provide this information. Leslie (AZ) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: Leslie85223 Surnames: BUTTS, SHACKELTON Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.cowley/942/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I've tried locating the burial site (description) of my ancestor HANNAH ADELIA "ADDIE" BUTTS SHACKELTON who was buried at Union Graham Cemetery in 1940. Found nothing and have no cemetery contact info. "Addie" was born 4/16/1852 in NY and died 10/11/1940 in CA. Her body was shipped to KS for burial at the Union Graham Cemetery in Winfield, Cowley Co., KS. According to census reports, Addie lived in IL from 1860-1870 and then lived in various places in KS from 1880-1920 I'm also hopeful that an obituary may have appeared in a local newspaper . . .???? The husband of Addie was ISSAC SHACKELTON -they were married 1/13/1870. Isaac was born 9/17/1836 NJ and died 12/7/1919 KS. It's possible he is also buried in this same cemetery. Would very much appreciate assistance in my search. Thank you, Leslie (AZ) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
