He died around 1912 after homesteading in the Winfield area from 1870 or so. Plan to visit Winfield next week and would appreciate any help provided. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: pammyinOklahoma Surnames: Jobe Ashley Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kansas.counties.cowley/912.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Samuel Jobe buried in Parker Cemetery, Arkansas City, Cowley, Kansas, served in Company D 79th Regiment Ohio Infantry. According to his records, he enlisted on 15 Aug 1864 at the age of 17 in the state of Ohio and mustered out on 9 Jun 1865 at Washington, DC. That would make him born in 1847. On Ancestry.com, I was able to locate a Pension for him filed by his wife, Hannah J. Jobe. It was filed in 1899 and then again in 1911 in Kansas. The Pension card also states that Samuel Jobe had an alias of Charles H. Ashley. I found a Chas and Hannah Ashley living in Arkansas City, Cowley, Kansas in the 1 Mar 1885 Kansas State Census collection. Charles was born in Ohio and came to Kansas from Colorado. In the line beside his name is gives his military service as D 79th Regiment Ohio Infantry. So, this is the same Charles that was also Samuel Jobe. (Hannah was born in Iowa and came to Kansas from Iowa.) In the 1895 Kansas State census of Arkansas City, Cowley, Kansas as C H and H. J. Ashley. A May and Clyde Ate are living with them. In the 1900 Federal Census for Arkansas City Ward 1, Cowley, Kansas, Charles and Hannah are living together again. It gives Charles birthdate as October 1847 Ohio. Hannah's birthdate is given as October 1843 New York. She has had 5 children and 3 are living. It shows that she and Charles have been married 15 years. Francis L. Ashley is listed as their daughter and her birthdate is shown as April 1894 in Kansas. Oddly enough, Charles occupation is listed as a sexton for a cemetery. In the 1905 Kansas State Census, they appear, yet again, in the Silverdale, Cowley, Kansas. This time, there is a son named Samuel Jobe, born abt 1880 in Kansas. There is an 11 year old girl named Frankie Ashley, born abt 1894 in New York. In the 1910 Federal Census for Silverdale, Cowley, Kansas, Charles and Hannah are living with daughter Frankie. This time, Charles birthplace shows up as Indiana. In the 1915 Kansas State Census, Hannah and Frankie are living in Arkansas City, Cowley, Kansas by themselves. There is no sign of Charles anywhere. In the 1920 Federal Census for Arkansas City Ward 1, Cowley, Kansas, Hannah is listed as a widow and still living with her daughter Francis Ashley (age 25). Hannah is 81 years old here. Perhaps this might help in locating his family. I have a copy of the pension form and the census' if anyone wants to e-mail me directly. pammyfaj@aol.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I was only 10 years old, but when we drove thru there a couple of days later on our way to Wichita, I can still remember wondering how anyone lived thru it. You can read more about the storm here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udall,_Kansas and here http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ict/udall/udall.php. I believe that their high school band marched in the Rose Bowl Parade that year and had to wear jeans because all of their uniforms had been destroyed. I just spent some time Googling for some further info about that, but I didn't find anything. Good Luck, Dee Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I tried posting a reply on the Cowley County message board, but apparently they're experiencing some "technical difficulties" so I'll try to remember what I had originally typed (the cyber gremlins apparently ate it when I had clicked on the "Post" button).
