I've "rescued" a group of three photographs belonging to the COLE, TAYLOR, and SMITH Families including: 1 - Catherine Matilda COLE TAYLOR who was the daughter of Allen John COLE and Eliza Ann KING, photograph taken at the McGhie Studio in Columbus, KS likely in the 1890's or early 1900's with Catherine appearing to be 50's at the time. 2 - Walter Perry TAYLOR taken at the Stover Nelson Studio in Syracuse, NE. Taken in the 1880's or early 1890's, Walter appears to be in his 20's at the time. 3 - Zelma SMITH daughter of Frank Sherman SMITH and Perla Ann TAYLOR, notes that she was born in Miltonvale, KS and died in Island Co., WA, the photograph was taken at the C. I. Lehmer Studio Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this family: Catherine Matilda "Kate" COLE was b. 31 Mar 1842 in Austinburg, OH to Allen John "AJ" COLE (1806-1885) and Elizabeth or Eliza Ann KING (1811-1873) who were married 12 Nov 1829 in Darien, GA. Kate was one of 10 children born to this couple including, Charles Perry; John Nathaniel; Henry; Henry C.; Jane L.; Ellen; Jane; Catherine Matilda; Mary Elizabeth; and Emma Amelia COLE, all born between 1830 and 1848.She married Jeremiah "Jerry" TAYLOR in 1868 in Boone, IL and they had a son, Walter Perry TAYLOR (1871-1946) and a daughter Perla Ann TAYLOR (1870-1956). After her husband died she married Levi WILLIAMS. Kate died 20 Apr 1900 in Coupeville, WA and is buried at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Coupeville, WA. Walter Perry TAYLOR was b. 31 Dec 1871 in Capron, IL son of Jeremiah & Kate TAYLOR came to Coupeville, WA in 1901 and married Mary A. LOHSE (1881-1961) on 27 Aug 1917 in Bellingham, WA. They had a son, Walter Wilbert TAYLOR (1919-1995). Walter Perry TAYLOR died 26 Aug 1946 in Oak Harbor, WA and is buried in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Coupeville, WA. Carrie Zelma SMITH was b. 14 Apr 1891 in Milton Vale, KS to parents Franklin Sherman Eli SMITH (b. 1865) and Perla or Pearl Ann TAYLOR (1870-1956) who were married 25 Oct 1893 in Portland, OR. Carrie was one of three children born to this couple including Carrie Zelma; John Lester; and Laura Irene SMITH, all born between 1891 and 1894. It appears that Carrie's Father was previously married and had a son Jesse Eli SMITH (1886-1942) and that her Mother married a second time and had three additional children including, Arthur Edwin; Walter; and Robert Byron BLACK born between 1904 and 1910. Carrie married David Edgar BYRD (1888-1969) on 28 Aug 1909 in Victoria, BC and they had two children, Coda Irene; and William Elmer BYRD born in 1910 and 1911. Carrie it appears married a second time to Mark Manderville WASHBURN (1888-1978) and they had two children, Edith WASHBURN (b. 1917); and Maurine Madge WASHBURN (1922-2006). Carrie also married a third time to Franklin Gerald George WILSON (1892-1947) and they had a daughter, Cecile Elizabeth WILSON (1928-1934). Carrie died Dec 1968 in Coupeville, WA. I am hoping to locate someone from the family so that these precious old photographs can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
I've "rescued" a group of photographs including Dillie COLE SNODGRASS who is identified as the daughter of John Nathaniel COLE and his wife Elizabeth. The photographs of Dillie are taken in Concordia, KS; Minneapolis, KS; and Madison, WI. All from the 1880's to the 1900's with her appearing to be from her teens to her 30's. I've also recovered others from John Nathaniel COLE'S sisters family so I know I have the right John, however, I don't see Dillie in his family tree but I do find a Dillie EVARTS SNODGRASS (daughter of John Nathaniel COLE'S sister Mary Elizabeth COLE) who appears to be a match. Quite the mystery - I'm thinking someone simply added the wrong information to the back of the photographs, somehow mixing up who Dillie belonged to in the family. A photograph online of Dillie in her later years does appear to be a match to the girl in the photographs I have. She appears to be in her teens in the 1880's photographs. The 1900's photograph taken in Madison, WI identified as her may not be as I feel that the brow line, mouth, and nose are different. I'm thinking it may be another relative of the same family? In this photograph she is pictured with two children, one appears to be a girl about 6-8 years old and the other a boy about 4-5 years old. The fourth photograph is identified as Melvin SNODGRASS, however it appears to have been taken in the 1890's with Melvin a teen at the time so not a match with Dillie's son Melvin who wasn't born until the 1900's. Again, I'm thinking someone guessed at the identify. This photograph was taken in Arapahoe, NE. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding Dillie and her family: Dillie Ellen EVARTS SNODGRASS was b. 15 Oct 1873 in Delphos, KS to parents Leman "Lee" Simon EVARTS (1838-1893) and Mary Elizabeth COLE (1844-1919). Dille was one of 12 children born to this couple including, Edward Clark; Minnie Elizabeth; Kate Eliza; Thomas Henry; John Allen; Dillie E.; Daisy; Leman Jr.; Charles Kirk; Bert Vick; Fannie Fern; and Bessie May EVARTS all born between 1864 and 1886. Dillie was married first to Thomas William MEE (1868-1921) and they had two sons, Harry Winford; and Herbert Edwin MEE. Her second husband was Descom SNODGRASS (1867-1948) whom she married in 1898. Dillie and Descom had three daughters, Zelma SNODGRASS BROWN (1899-1989); Jennie May SNODGRASS COMER; Mary Lila or Lilah SNODGRASS GNUSCHKE; and sons Melvin Descom and Frank O'Kane SNODGRASS. At the time of her death on 24 Apr 1951 her son Harry MEE was living in Kansas; Herbert MEE was living in Mossyrock, WA, and sons Melvin and Frank SNODGRASS were living in Kelso, WA. Her daughter Zelma BROWN was living in Oak Grove, WA; daughter Jennie COMER was living in Toledo, WA; and Mary GNUSCHKE was living in Kelso, WA. A brother Bert EVARTS was living in Nebraska. Dillie is buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Kelso, WA. Dillie's uncle was John Nathaniel COLE b. 14 Sept 1830 in Georgia and died 7 Apr 1903. John was married to Elizabeth EVERETTS (1835-1915) and together they had four children including, Emma Eliza; Frances Elizabeth; Ella Jane; and Nellie E. COLE all born between 1869 and 1882. John and his sister Mary Elizabeth COLE (Dillie's Mother) were two of the children born to Allen John COLE (1806-1885) and Eliza Ann KING (1811- 1873) who were married 12 Nov 1829 in Darien, GA. I am hoping to locate someone from this family so that the photographs can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. I checked the Cloud County Cemetery Book, Volume 1, which contains cemeteries in five townships, including Elk, where the Mt. Hope Cemetery is located. The only Lassey listed was Joseph. He's in Block 12, Lot 24. If you like, I can try to locate an obit for him. Just let me know. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, December 05, 2013 2:00 AM To: [email protected] Subject: KSCLOUD Digest, Vol 8, Issue 16 Today's Topics: 1. The Ghost Towns article says, on p 8 " The Post Office at Ten Mile opened September 4, 1871 in Section 31 of Arion Township, remained as such until August 22, 1879, when it changed both post office and name, and became Macyville, with George W Macy as its postmaster. Macyville became a thriving town, having at one time three stores, a blacksmith shop, and a church. P 21 mentions Daisy Macy as one of the early members of the Rural Jayhawker Club. p 22 mentions John Macy as a Board member of the Cloud county Farm Bureau, in 1992. p 166 has an article about the Macyville store, and a photo.
