Sheryl ****************************************************************************** **** from Clay County Kansas Heritage, 1993 William Merrill Jenkins, son of John and Mary Sanders Jenkins, was born December 20, 1856, at Happy House Cottage, Flanighen, Monmouthshire, England. In 1880, he came with his brother, John, to America and secured work on a farm near Freeport, Illinois. In 1882, he homesteaded on a farm on Summers Twp., Thomas Co., Kansas. A succession of crop failures led him to sell his interests and he moved to Clay County and settled on a farm eight miles northeast of Clay Center. Jennie Johanna Hedberg, daughter of Lars and Christina Endotta Mirror Hedberg, was born January 19, 1871 at Soderola Pausch, Sweden. At the age of thirteen she came with her parents to Clay County. She married Alcite Charpie of Bluffton, Ohio, and they had three children: Edna, who died in infancy; Irwin, who married Laura Doberer, parents of Ruby and Warren; Oliver, who married Grace Pfeil, parents of Ione and Louie. Following Alcite's death, she returned to Clay County. William and Jennie were married August 3, 1894 and they had ten children: Alice, who died in infancy; Rosalee, married Herbert Nelson, parents of Dallas; Ethel, married John Carpenter, parents of Imogene, Mary Louise, and John D.; Lloyd; Elsie, married Harold Naumann, parents of Harold Dean, Homer, and Maxine; Dorothy, married Horace Cowell, parents of Bill; Ruth, married Illif Lloyd, parents of Betty Jean; Estelle, married Bill Hurlock; William, married Betty Whetzel. parents of Maureen, Marilyn, June, Virginia and Delbert "John"; Helen, married Leo Donovan, parents of Terry and Danny. In 1916, William and Jennie moved to a farm in the Five Creeks neighborhood, southwest of Clay Center, where they spent the rest of their lives. William was a member of the Church of England and Jennie was confirmed in the Swedesburg Augustana Lutheran Church of Clay Ceneter.
