I'm sure Kathy will be a great help, she's been a terrific and sensational help with our family research over here in Melbourne in Australia, even though Kathy does complain about not understanding our Aussie accent when I last spoke with her, then I had to say, "Hey Kathy, slow down cause I can't understand your either " !!! LOL ! Best Wishes Don in Melbourne AU <Snip> You can contact the Clay County Museum and they will make you copies of those obits--you might call first to find out what they will charge. LOL ! > Best Wishes > Don in Melbourne AU I would certainly echo Don's comments about Kathy Haney at the historical museum in Clay Center. I cannot think of a single person who has been more of a help to our family in searching out our roots in Clay County than this wonderful lady. My great grandfather, HENRY SANDERS, was one of three Sanders brothers who homesteaded in Clay County in the early 1860's. Kathy's family were original homesteaders also and she was "raised in the neighborhood" as she says. She knows the history of the area and of most of the families in and around Clay Center, Broughton, Gatesville and just about every story there is to tell about the settlers. To show you the lengths this lady went to help me and my children, she spent one entire afternoon helping us look up Sanders records at the historical society, then personally drove us several miles out into the country to look for my great grandfather's old stone house. In her good skirt and high heels, Kathy climbed barbed wire fences, cleared away brush and weeds and helped us find great grandfather's house hidden in a grove of trees, long abandoned, but still standing. What a wonderful discovery for us and what a treasure is Kathy Haney for all. Jack, I think you and I share a really distant cousin, 10 times removed and married into both of our families, I haven't the details at my fingertips at the moment though..... What a lovely testament to Kathy, I didn't go into depth of what that great lady did for my and my cousin, she photocopied heaps and heaps of obits and other information on our Hemphill's and McCully's, Richards and Johnston's, we had a couple of lengthy phone calls, I'd forgotten how much we are ahead [In time and ?] of you guys in KS] at really odd times my way, but Kathy was so, so helpful, considering us Aussies are considered "Aliens" - [Is that a laugh or what ?.] I've had so much help on the net from some lovely people from KS, beyond Clay Co too it's been a total pleasure cyber-meeting so many wonderful people. My cousin here in Adelaide and I in Melbourne [AU] have over a long time learnt so much about KS that we feel spiritually rooted to the State and have enjoyed every minute of our learning and knowledge of Clay in particular. I reckon I have read and perused the book "Pioneers of the Bluestem Prairie" so much that I prick my ears when I see a surname of your Pioneers. Of course my newly found family ties of Irene [McCully] and her husband Leo have enriched us over here, it's been sensational touching base with our newly found extended family, Irene was so instrumental in submitting so much information into the Pioneers of the Bluestem Prairie and essentially it was those entries that enabled us to locate family and Irene in particular, then after we had you wonderful KS and Clay Co people took over and ensured that we touched base with them and their extended families. Sorry this is so long but in conclusion [I know Kathy won't see this as she really hates emails and the net - LOL !!] I'd like to be the instigator of some sort of recognition of Kathy's work, her life long interest in Clay Co and especially her help to others in this weird world of Genealogy, surely Jack your story and mine are not isolated ?? Finally Jack, is Rachel Sanders who married Harry Hemphill McCully yours, I suspect she must be ?? Best Wishes to all Don in Melbourne AU [Coming into our Spring with, thank God, none of your weather problems]
