My great grandmother, SUSANNAH ANGELINE SIMPSON SANDERS, was the daughter of JAMES H. SIMPSON and NANCY WORLEY. I have some information on James Simpson, a pix of his stone house and gravestone. A bit of information about where he came from, also his wife NANCY, but not sure I have his parents name. NANCY WORLEY was Pennsylvania Dutch descent, I believe. I'll dig up what I have here and will try to help you. Please contact. Regards, Jack Sanders, Eureka, Kansas

I have no info on the LARKAN and ELLIS families, but here is a story about St. Mary's from the Clay County Heritage Book According to this, the cemetery was three miles NORTH of Clifton--wouldn't that put in it Washington Co.? Sheryl ______________________________ St. Mary's Church The history of St. Mary's Church, one of the oldest in the Salina Diocese, goes back to the time of the first settlers of this area. The very first residents of Clifton Township were Catholics, arriving here in 1859. They came from Luxemburg crossing the ocean by sailing ship, taking them six months to cross the ocean; then, they came by rail to Freeport, Illinois and on to Kansas by wagons drawn by oxen. They settled along "Parson's Creek" where water, wood and good prairie grass was abundant. The first settlers of the area were Nicolas Esslinger, Nicolas Schumaker, both unmarried at the time, and Mr. and Mrs. Peter Esslinger and two children. These good families induced others to come to Kansas from their native country, soon the nucleus of a Catholic settlement was formed. After about three years the two unmarried men traveled to Leavenworth seeking Bishop Meige's assistance in getting a missionary to attend the little settlement. At first the missionaries came from the Jesuit Mission at St. Mary's, Kansas--later they came from Atchinson and Hanover. These priests traveled by horseback; there were months at a time between visits to the settlement. At first mass was offered in the homes; then in 1865 a log school house was built. Mass was offered there. On Sunday when there was no visiting priest the people gathered to recite the rosary and litany together. In 1871 the community built a church three and 1/2 miles north of Clifton and welcomed the railroad in 1877. This made it easier for priests to reach the community. The members of the parish built this church out of native timber doing all the work themselves. There was no laying of a cornerstone and no dedication. In 1898 the little frame building was sold and a fine church was built. At this time the St. Mary's Church was served by a priest from Clara, where a church and parish house had been built a few years earlier. Clifton was by now a thriving town with three railroads. In 1904 a parish house was erected north of the church and there was hope of a resident pastor. From that time on there has been a resident priest serving St. Mary's congregation. The third church was built in 1922; it is serving the parish today. The second building burned to the ground during a terrible electric storm August 19, 1918. During the four years between, mass was offered in the parish house. It was with keen foresight that the church was biult in town instead of in the country. The parish house was torn down and rebuilt beside the church in town in 1924. The cemetery has been enlarged and takes in the ground that once held the church and parish house. The congregation of St. Mary's Church has grown to approximately 300 members including former members of St. Bernard's Church in Clara which closed in 1974. Father John Walsh, born and raised in Ireland, is the priest at this time.
Does anyone know if St Mary's Church still exists, or its cemetery? Exactly where was it? My obituary says 3 miles south of Clifton... I am looking for ancestors buried there, Arthur (A.A.) LARKAN and his wife Mary Emma BAKER, as well as their daughter Elizabeth "Bess" LARKAN ELLIS. I know Arthur died 26 Nov 1923, and his wife died about 1915. Their daughter died 7 Jan 1924. I need to find out when the mother, Mary Emma died. Thanks for any help! ===== Jamie Schenkel jamiess10@yahoo.com arschenkel@mindspring.com http://www.geocities.com/capecanaveral/5412 (family page) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I am hoping someone out there might be of help... I am trying to track down information on the lives of Arthur A. LARKAN, and his wife Mary Emma BAKER. They apparently married in Centralia MO, then moved to Clifton. They had one daughter, Elizabeth "Bessie", and I believe they are buried at St Mary's Church Cemetery. In his obituary, it mentioned that his brother was assasinated in Atchinson? Any info on this family would be greatly appreciated! ===== Jamie Schenkel jamiess10@yahoo.com arschenkel@mindspring.com http://www.geocities.com/capecanaveral/5412 (family page) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Dear List Members. Ancestry is down. They are working on it. I was just sent a temp addresses - I am not even sure if it will work for you - but try it if you have been trying to get on. This is the message that was sent.... "The connection problem for ancestry.com has been fixed. Ancestry expects it will be another day maybe two before the corrected information is globally propagated. You can connect use http://216.10.103.21/ to connect to ancestry.com Thank you for your patience during this crisis." PLEASE do not post to the list if it does not work and PLEASE do not post to the list that Ancestry is down. If you have a concern or a question you can contact me personally KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net - but I am not even sure I can answer it, but will try. :) I appreciate each and every one of you who are helping me keep our list confined to postings regarding the topic of our list. Dear List Members, I was sent this site by a fellow researcher "Index to the Guion Miller Roll" http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/guionmiller/index.htm I found it very interesting - and thought I would pass it on to you. Now for the other items. This message is being sent out to all of my list, some which only have 3 members and some with almost 1000. If you are one of my smaller lists and feel that you only hear from me, why don't you take this opportunity to send a query to the list. If you need help from me, please put something in the subject line to alert me that the message is a request for help. When I am at work during the day I use http://www.mail2web.com from my office computer to keep an eye on my lists. I can only read the subject line from there and unless I open each and every message which most times are in the hundreds by 10 am in the morning. This is two time consuming while at work. So, to repeat, if you need my help, please place something in the subject line so that I will know your request needs attention quickly. One more item, It is time or about time when most children are heading back to school and many Moms and or Dads who are staying home now have additional time to work on their genealogy. If we begin to get messages across the lists that do not conform to the guidelines we have for our list, please just let them pass. Remember I am behind the scenes taking care of these problems, helping members subscribe and unsubscribe and reminding members of the guidelines of the list. The only time I send out corrections to the entire list is when the entire list is involved or when one of our members is being attached on the list - I then come to the defense in the same place the attack took place -- On the list. Enjoy the site - Thank you for your continued support. Kathleen Burnett List Mom

I'm looking for information concerning the family of William James White. He was b. in 1847 in NY, and served in the Civil War in Company H, 5th Illinois Cavalry. In 1876 he married Catherine Julia Walsh in McLean County, IL. Later he moved to Clay Center. He, his wife, and their daughter, also named Catherine Julia, are buried in Clay Center. Some of the family moved on to Washington State, but William and Catherine stayed. Does anyone recognize this family? Thanks in advance, Linda in Utah
Listowner of Manager, I am 'subscribed" to this List from 2 E-mail addressess and therefore get 2 each of each message to the List. My old address - judyb@inficad.com - had to be changed because I got a new Server. I did not properly "unsubscribe" from my old address before starting to use my new address and now I cannot automatically "unsubscribe" from that address. I thought I had accomplished it and '"subscribed" with my new address. My old Server has said that I would continue to get mail addressed to my old address for 90 days but it seems to have gone on a lot longer than that. I would really appreciate it if you could manually "unsubscribe" me with my old address so I will get only one of each message that comes to the List. Thank you, Judy Bates
