    3. Thanks to all who suggested I contact Kathy at the Clay County Museum. You were right -- she's terrific and a great help. She said she would get my Hunter obituaries in the mail in a couple of days. Listening to her Kansas twang brought back a flood of memories of my late grandmother who was born and raised in Kansas. 3. Jack, I think you and I share a really distant cousin, 10 times removed and married into both of our families, I haven't the details at my fingertips at the moment though..... What a lovely testament to Kathy, I didn't go into depth of what that great lady did for my and my cousin, she photocopied heaps and heaps of obits and other information on our Hemphill's and McCully's, Richards and Johnston's, we had a couple of lengthy phone calls, I'd forgotten how much we are ahead [In time and ?] of you guys in KS] at really odd times my way, but Kathy was so, so helpful, considering us Aussies are considered "Aliens" - [Is that a laugh or what ?.] I've had so much help on the net from some lovely people from KS, beyond Clay Co too it's been a total pleasure cyber-meeting so many wonderful people. My cousin here in Adelaide and I in Melbourne [AU] have over a long time learnt so much about KS that we feel spiritually rooted to the State and have enjoyed every minute of our learning and knowledge of Clay in particular. I reckon I have read and perused the book "Pioneers of the Bluestem Prairie" so much that I prick my ears when I see a surname of your Pioneers. Of course my newly found family ties of Irene [McCully] and her husband Leo have enriched us over here, it's been sensational touching base with our newly found extended family, Irene was so instrumental in submitting so much information into the Pioneers of the Bluestem Prairie and essentially it was those entries that enabled us to locate family and Irene in particular, then after we had you wonderful KS and Clay Co people took over and ensured that we touched base with them and their extended families. Sorry this is so long but in conclusion [I know Kathy won't see this as she really hates emails and the net - LOL !!] I'd like to be the instigator of some sort of recognition of Kathy's work, her life long interest in Clay Co and especially her help to others in this weird world of Genealogy, surely Jack your story and mine are not isolated ?? Finally Jack, is Rachel Sanders who married Harry Hemphill McCully yours, I suspect she must be ?? Best Wishes to all Don in Melbourne AU [Coming into our Spring with, thank God, none of your weather problems]

    3. I'm sure Kathy will be a great help, she's been a terrific and sensational help with our family research over here in Melbourne in Australia, even though Kathy does complain about not understanding our Aussie accent when I last spoke with her, then I had to say, "Hey Kathy, slow down cause I can't understand your either " !!! LOL ! Best Wishes Don in Melbourne AU <Snip> You can contact the Clay County Museum and they will make you copies of those obits--you might call first to find out what they will charge. LOL ! > Best Wishes > Don in Melbourne AU I would certainly echo Don's comments about Kathy Haney at the historical museum in Clay Center. I cannot think of a single person who has been more of a help to our family in searching out our roots in Clay County than this wonderful lady. My great grandfather, HENRY SANDERS, was one of three Sanders brothers who homesteaded in Clay County in the early 1860's. Kathy's family were original homesteaders also and she was "raised in the neighborhood" as she says. She knows the history of the area and of most of the families in and around Clay Center, Broughton, Gatesville and just about every story there is to tell about the settlers. To show you the lengths this lady went to help me and my children, she spent one entire afternoon helping us look up Sanders records at the historical society, then personally drove us several miles out into the country to look for my great grandfather's old stone house. In her good skirt and high heels, Kathy climbed barbed wire fences, cleared away brush and weeds and helped us find great grandfather's house hidden in a grove of trees, long abandoned, but still standing. What a wonderful discovery for us and what a treasure is Kathy Haney for all. 3. I just looked at a microfilm of death index cards from Clay County searching for some of my Hunter relatives. I found found several that I want to order obituaries for. The cards show the name of the deceased, the date of death, which cemetery they were buried in and what appears to be the name/names of Newspapers in which an obituary was published and the date. All of the people I am looking for list "Times" as the newspaper. Can anyone tell me the full name of the paper and where I might order a copy of the obituary? Thanks. _________________________________________________________________ On the road to retirement? 2. Kare Pickett
    3. An article in the Who's Who section of the Clifton News, Clifton, Kansas on October 24, 1935 reads: " Fifty-five years ago, Sam Cain, who had been living in the Vining vicinity for a year, returned to his home town of Palestine, Illinois in January, married the girl of his choice, Ellen King, and brought her to Kansas in February. And in this community this couple has spent all of their married life. Just two visits have the Cain's made to Illinois. Their first voyage was twenty-five years after their marriage and their second trip was several years ago when their grandson, Harold Woodruff, and Alice Woodruff, his wife, accompanied them to Crawford county, Illinois for a big family reunion. Sam Cain, the son of Lewis and Sarah Cain, was born in Ohio. There were seven children in the family, two girls and five boys. The family moved from Ohio to Crawford county, near Palestine, Illinois, when Sam Cain was a young man. He had obtained his education in Ohio before coming to Illinois. Mrs. Cain's birthplace was on a farm near Palestine, Illinois. Her father and mother were J.M. and Elizabeth King. The father who was of Irish descent, was a native of Ohio, but the mother, of Dutch nationality, was born in Illinois. Mrs. Cain, Nee Ellen King, one of five children, received her education and grew to womanhood in Illinois. None of the members of the King family ever came to Kansas to live except Mrs. Cain, but Mr. Cain's brother, Ben, resided in this community for several years. A sister, Mrs. Latitia Wheeler, was a resident of Miltonvale. She passed away about a year ago. When Sam Cain came to this community in 1880, they lived on the Brook's farm which is a mile west of Vining. Mr. Cain farmed the greater part of his life, but he also followed the carpenter trade for some years. Mr. and Mrs. Cain are the parents of two daughters and one son, Mrs. Harve Lewis (Stella) of the Clyde vicinity, Mrs. Lewis Woodruff (Emma) of Omega, Oklahoma, and Charles Cain of Vining. The thirteen grandchildren are the six children of Mrs. and Mrs. Harve Lewis, Lester, Raymond, Carrie, George, Evelyn and Esther; the five sons of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Woodruff, Harold and Jack Woodruff of Vining, Wallace, Chester and Volney of Omega, Oklahoma; and the daughter and son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cain, Mrs. Leonard Boughen (June) and Merle Cain. Mr. and Mrs. Cain have eight great grandchildren. They are the six children of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lewis, Raymond Jr., Bernice, Norma Lee, Gloria, Donald and Shirley Ann; Vivian, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Lewis and George Jr., the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Lewis. Mrs. Cain enjoys making quilts which she says is her hobby. She is a faithful member of the Christian church and an interested worker in the Ladies Aid Society and in Mrs. Louanna Banner's Sunday School class of which she is a member. The Cain's moved to Vining five years ago from the Cusac farm on which they had lived for eighteen years. In addition to the two trips to Illinois, the Cain's have been to Oklahoma two or three times with Harold Woodruff's to visit their daughter. These pioneer farmers who have experienced the hardships of early times, have been loyal citizens of the community always, good neighbors who are well liked and highly respected by everyone."
